Lagoa travel guide
Sea caves at Benagil, Praia da Marinha and Lagoa DOC wine
A market town in the western Algarve whose municipality includes Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Benagil and Praia da Marinha. Come between May and October for the beaches and the cliff-top trail; three or four nights covers the coast and a day at Sand City. Costs are moderate, and Schengen rules apply.
Lagoa is a small inland town in the western Algarve whose municipality runs down to one of the most photographed stretches of the Portuguese coast. Within its borders sit Carvoeiro, the sea cave at Benagil and Praia da Marinha, a beach the Michelin Guide has placed among the ten finest in Europe.
Most visitors never stay in the town itself. They base themselves in Carvoeiro, five kilometres south, or across the Arade estuary from Portimão in Ferragudo, and come up to Lagoa for the weekly shop, a wine tasting or the sand sculptures on the EN125.
The municipality is divided into four parishes: Lagoa e Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Porches, and Estômbar e Parchal. Porches has a long pottery tradition, and the vineyards around the town make up the Lagoa DOC wine region.
Inside the old core, the former Carmelite Convento de São José now works as the town's cultural centre, with exhibitions in its restored rooms. It takes an hour at most. The real reason to come is the coast, where limestone cliffs break into arches, coves and sinkholes.
A royal charter of 1773 made it a town after centuries under Silves, and it still has the feel of a working market town rather than a resort.

Best time to visit Lagoa
Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
The sea is warm enough for swimming, the boat trips to Benagil run, and the cliff path is quiet in the mornings.
Every cove fills by late morning and parking at Marinha and Benagil runs out; book boat trips and tables ahead.
Many beach restaurants in Carvoeiro close, but the trail and the wine estates suit walkers and the town keeps its normal life.
Sand City, the sand sculpture park on the EN125 at Lagoa that grew out of the old FIESA festival, usually opens in spring and runs into autumn with a new theme each year; check its dates before you plan around it.

Getting there
Faro airport, the A22 and Lagoa station
Fly into Faro and drive the A22 Via do Infante to the Lagoa exit, 45 minutes to an hour. The A22 has electronic tolls only, so rent a car with a transponder or arrange payment first. Without a car, take a taxi or transfer. Algarve line trains stop at Lagoa station near Estômbar, outside town.
- Faro airport (FAO)
- About 45-60 minutes by car via the A22
- A22 Via do Infante
- Electronic tolls only, no booths
- Estação de Lagoa
- Algarve regional line, outside the town near Estômbar
- Lisbon by road
- A2 south, then A22 west towards Portimão
- Ask the rental desk how the A22 tolls are charged before leaving the airport.
- Carvoeiro is a better first stop than Lagoa town if you arrive late and want dinner by the sea.
- Unpaid tolls can follow you home as a fine through the rental firm.
Where to stay
Carvoeiro, Ferragudo or the town
Choose by evenings: Carvoeiro for restaurants and bars around Largo da Praia, Ferragudo for a quieter riverside village facing Portimão, Vale de Centeanes for a cove at the start of the cliff trail, or Lagoa town for value without a beach. Buses are thin, so most places assume a car.
- Carvoeiro
- Former fishing village with restaurants and bars around Largo da Praia; busy and loud in August
- Ferragudo
- Quieter village on the Arade estuary facing Portimão, with a riverside square and the Fort of São João do Arade
- Vale de Centeanes
- Hotels and villas above a sandy cove, at the start of the cliff trail
- Lagoa town
- Ordinary market town with better value and local cafés, but no beach
- Villas in the hills near Porches are peaceful but you will drive for everything, including bread.
Getting around
Car, cliff trail and boat trips
Drive, since beaches sit down side roads off the EN125 and buses are infrequent; arrive at Praia da Marinha and Benagil before ten in summer. Walk the 5 km Seven Hanging Valleys trail between Marinha and Vale de Centeanes. Benagil cave boat and kayak trips leave from Benagil, Carvoeiro and Portimão.
- Seven Hanging Valleys trail
- About 5 km between Marinha and Vale de Centeanes
- Benagil cave
- Seen from a licensed boat or a guided kayak or paddleboard tour; landing on the sand inside and swimming in are banned
- Taxis
- Ranks in Carvoeiro and Lagoa, useful after dinner
- Walk the trail early; there is almost no shade and the cliffs have no fences in places.
Know before you go
What makes Lagoa worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The Benagil cave from the water, when the light drops through the hole in its roof onto the sand inside.
- Walking the Seven Hanging Valleys trail at eight in the morning, with the coves still empty below.
- Algar Seco in Carvoeiro, a tangle of eroded rock, natural windows and pools a few minutes east of the main beach.
- Ferragudo's waterfront at sunset, looking across the river to Portimão with grilled fish on the table.
- Sand City, where huge sand sculptures fill a site beside the EN125 for most of the year.
Good to know
- Cliff edges are unstable; keep back from the rim and do not sit under overhangs on the beaches.
- Beach car parks fill by mid-morning from July to August at Marinha and Benagil.
- Many Carvoeiro restaurants close for part of the winter, so check before driving down in January.

Weather in Lagoa, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Lagoa are being researched.
Benagil cave, Algar Seco and a Ferragudo sunset in two days
Give Lagoa two days: on day one, walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Praia da Marinha to Benagil and take a licensed boat or kayak to the cave, then see Algar Seco's rock windows near Carvoeiro. On day two, explore Ferragudo on the Arade estuary and stay for sunset.
Afternoon. Have lunch in Benagil or drive back to Carvoeiro, then walk out to Algar Seco, east of the village, where the rock has eroded into windows and terraces above the sea. Look in at the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação on the headland on the way back.
Day two. Spend the morning in Lagoa itself: the market, the Convento de São José cultural centre and a coffee in the old streets. Before lunch, drive to Sand City on the EN125, which takes about two hours to see properly. In the afternoon, head west to Ferragudo, walk up through the village to the church and then down to the Fort of São João do Arade at the river mouth. Stay for dinner by the water, looking across to Portimão.
Cataplana, sardines and Dom Rodrigos around Lagoa
Seafood dominates. The dish to share is cataplana, fish or shellfish stewed in a hinged copper pan, usually for two. In summer, sardinhas assadas, sardines grilled whole over charcoal, are the cheap and honest choice, and Ferragudo's riverside restaurants do them well with salad and boiled potatoes.
Algarve sweets use the region's almonds, figs and oranges. Look for Dom Rodrigos, egg-yolk threads wrapped in foil, morgados and figos cheios, stuffed figs, in pastry shops in Lagoa town.
Lagoa is also the centre of the Lagoa DOC wine region. Several estates around the town and towards Porches offer tastings, and the local reds and rosés turn up on most restaurant lists. In Carvoeiro, the restaurants around Largo da Praia are convenient but busy; walk up the side streets for better grilled fish.
Sand City season and trips along the Arade
The event that draws many visitors inland is Sand City, the sand sculpture park beside the EN125 at Lagoa. It grew out of the International Sand Sculpture Festival (FIESA) and now changes its theme every year, usually opening in spring and closing in autumn, with evening lighting in summer.
For a day trip, cross the Arade bridge to Portimão for its riverside and Praia da Rocha, or continue west to Lagos for the Ponta da Piedade cliffs. Silves, the old Moorish capital of the Algarve, lies a short drive inland up the river. East along the EN125, Albufeira is the big resort and Faro has the walled old town near the airport, worth a stop on your last day.
Spring and autumn suit the cliff walks best. In July and August, plan the coast for early morning and leave Sand City or the wineries for the hot afternoons.
