Odemira travel guide
Clifftop trails, fishing coves and the Sudoeste festival site in the wild southwest Alentejo
A huge, thinly populated municipality on the southwest coast of Portugal, made up of a small river town and a string of cliff-top fishing villages inside a natural park. Come from April to June for walking and wildflowers, or September for warm sea and fewer people. Allow three to five days, more if you hike the Rota Vicentina. Prices are moderate, and many passports need no visa.
Portugal's largest municipality covers more than 1,700 square kilometres of the southwest Alentejo, yet fewer than 30,000 people live in it. Odemira is the name of both the whole district and its small inland town on the Mira river; the coast to the west, with its cliffs, coves and fishing villages, is what draws most visitors.
That coastline sits inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Development is tightly limited, so there are no high-rise resorts, just whitewashed villages such as Vila Nova de Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira do Mar strung along schist cliffs above sandy coves.
Walkers know the area through the Rota Vicentina. Its Fishermen's Trail hugs the clifftops on sandy paths between the villages, while the Historical Way loops inland through cork oak country and farm hamlets. Spring, when the cliffs are covered in wildflowers, is the classic time to hike.
Zambujeira do Mar is the busiest village in summer. Its main beach lies in a cove below the cliffs, with the small white chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar on the headland. A few kilometres inland, the Herdade da Casa Branca estate near São Teotónio has hosted the Festival Sudoeste in August since 1997, though there was no edition in 2025 or 2026.
Odemira town itself is a quiet working place with old fountains, a riverside and a bus station, useful mostly as a gateway. Farming has changed the landscape around São Teotónio, where greenhouses for berries now cover large areas and many seasonal workers from South Asia have settled.

Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
The clifftops bloom, days are warm enough to swim in sheltered coves, and the Rota Vicentina trails are at their best.
Hot inland, breezier on the coast; August is packed in Zambujeira and Milfontes, September is calmer.
Atlantic storms and rain, many seasonal restaurants closed, but empty trails on dry days.
Festival Sudoeste normally fills Zambujeira do Mar for about five days in early August, but there was no edition in 2025 or 2026; the promoter hopes to return in 2027, so check before planning around it.

Getting there
Faro or Lisbon, then Rede Expressos or the Santa Clara-Saboia train
Hire a car: Faro is the closer airport for Zambujeira and the south, Lisbon for Milfontes, about three hours by road. Rede Expressos coaches link Lisbon, Setúbal and Sines with Odemira, São Teotónio and the coastal villages. Intercity trains stop at Santa Clara-Saboia, inland and a long taxi ride from the coast.
- Faro (FAO)
- Nearest airport for Zambujeira and the southern coast; car hire or coach
- Lisbon (LIS)
- Better for Milfontes; coach via Setúbal and Sines, or about three hours by car
- Coach
- Rede Expressos to Odemira, São Teotónio and the coastal villages
- Train
- Santa Clara-Saboia station, inland; needs a taxi to reach the coast
- Book summer coaches ahead, especially in August, when seats to Zambujeira sell out.
- Zambujeira do Mar is about 6 km from São Teotónio and about twice that from Odemira town.
Where to stay
Zambujeira, Milfontes or a rural guesthouse
Sleep in a coastal village for beach and trail days, or in an inland farm stay if you have a car. Zambujeira do Mar is small and walkable but full in August, Vila Nova de Milfontes has the most rooms and restaurants, and Almograve is a quiet stop on the Fishermen's Trail.
- Zambujeira do Mar
- Small, walkable, beach below the village; noisy and full in August
- Vila Nova de Milfontes
- Biggest choice of rooms and restaurants, river beach on the Mira estuary
- Almograve
- Quiet base on the Fishermen's Trail, few services out of season
- Rural tourism houses
- Farmsteads between São Teotónio and the coast; a car is essential
- Many guesthouses close from November to March; confirm before booking winter walks.
Getting around
Car, local taxis and the Fishermen's Trail
Drive. Villages are far apart and buses run only a few times a day, fewer at weekends. Each village is walkable, and Zambujeira has taxis near the beach entrance. Walkers can link villages on the Rota Vicentina's waymarked stages, with luggage transfers; the Fishermen's Trail is soft sand and feels longer than it measures.
- Car hire
- Easiest from Faro or Lisbon airport
- Taxi
- Rank at the beach end of Zambujeira's main street
- Rota Vicentina
- Waymarked Fishermen's Trail (coast) and Historical Way (inland)
- Carry water and sun protection on the clifftop stages; there is almost no shade.
- Expect tractors and farm traffic on the narrow roads around São Teotónio.
Know before you go
What makes Odemira worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Sunset from the Nossa Senhora do Mar chapel above Zambujeira's beach.
- A spring stage of the Fishermen's Trail, with storks nesting on sea stacks below the path.
- Swimming in the Mira estuary at Milfontes when the Atlantic is too rough.
- Fresh percebes (goose barnacles) in a village seafood house.
Good to know
- The Atlantic here is cold and powerful; swim only at lifeguarded beaches in summer.
- Cliff edges crumble: keep to the marked paths, especially with children.
- August is booked solid in the coastal villages, festival year or not.

Weather in Odemira, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Odemira are being researched.
Three days between Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira
Day one. Base yourself in Vila Nova de Milfontes. Spend the morning on the river beach where the Mira meets the sea, then walk the clifftops north of the village in the afternoon. Dinner in the old centre, where seafood restaurants line the small streets near the fort.
Day two. Walk or drive south to Almograve along the Fishermen's Trail, a coastal stage over sand and schist with views of sea stacks and fishing coves. In the evening continue to Zambujeira do Mar.
Day three. Start early at the Nossa Senhora do Mar chapel, then go down to the main beach before it fills. Later, explore the smaller coves nearby, such as Alteirinhos and Tonel, both reachable from the village. In the late afternoon drive inland to see the Herdade da Casa Branca area near São Teotónio, home of the Festival Sudoeste, and on to Odemira town for a walk by the river and its old fountains.
With an extra day, head south into the Algarve to Lagos, a little over an hour away, or follow the trail into the Vicentine coast.
Percebes, Alentejo bread soups and Zambujeira's seafood houses
Food here mixes two worlds. From the sea come percebes, goose barnacles prised off the rocks by local fishermen, eaten simply boiled, along with grilled fish, octopus and clams. Every coastal village has at least one marisqueira, and Zambujeira has several within a short walk of the beach.
From inland Alentejo come slower dishes: açorda, a bread soup with garlic, coriander and poached egg; migas with pork; and stews that mix pork and clams. Bread, olive oil and coriander anchor most of it. Sheep and goat cheeses and local honey show up on breakfast tables in rural guesthouses.
Plan around opening hours. Many small restaurants close one day a week, so check before driving out to a particular place. Outside summer, the choice in Zambujeira and Almograve shrinks to a handful of places, while Milfontes keeps more open year-round.
For a break from the coast, the tascas of Boavista dos Pinheiros and the cafés of Odemira town serve plain home cooking at local prices.
The Sudoeste pause and the coast's quieter calendar
Festival Sudoeste, held near Zambujeira do Mar each August since 1997, had no edition in 2025 or 2026; the promoter hopes to return in 2027, its 30th anniversary, but no dates were confirmed when checked in October 2026. August still brings village religious festivals in Zambujeira and Milfontes, and the municipal holiday is 8 September.
August is also the month of village religious festivals, with processions and evening music in Zambujeira and Milfontes. The municipal holiday falls on 8 September.
Outside summer, nature sets the calendar. March to May is wildflower season on the cliffs and the main walking period; autumn brings warm seas until about October and empty beaches. Winter belongs to Atlantic swell and rain, and some villages almost go to sleep.
For day trips, Évora is the classic inland Alentejo city, a couple of hours by car, and Lisbon or the Algarve towns are easy add-ons at either end of a trip.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Quick answers to the questions travelers ask most before visiting Odemira.
General
No. After skipping 2025 for lack of a sponsor, the promoter called off the 2026 edition too and has said he hopes to return in 2027; no dates had been confirmed by October 2026.
Only partly. Intercity and Alfa Pendular trains stop at Santa Clara-Saboia, far inland, so you still need a taxi or car to reach the villages.
It is a waymarked coastal path along the clifftops between fishing villages such as Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira, mostly on sand, best walked in spring or autumn.
Vila Nova de Milfontes has the most rooms and restaurants and an estuary beach; Zambujeira do Mar is smaller and closer to the festival site.
Percebes (goose barnacles) gathered on this coast are the local speciality, along with grilled fish and clams in the village marisqueiras.
In practice yes, unless you are walking the Rota Vicentina. Coaches link the main villages only a few times a day.
Drive. Villages are far apart and buses run only a few times a day, fewer at weekends. Each village is walkable, and Zambujeira has taxis near the beach entrance.

Stay & facilities
Only a few. Many places are seasonal, so between November and March expect limited choice and check opening days in advance.
Timing & weather
The best time to visit Odemira is Apr to Jun, Sep. Spring flowers and good hiking, then warm September seas after the August crowds.
