SpiceJet is an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, with hubs at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Hyderabad. It flies mostly within India, with international routes to the Gulf and nearby countries, and suits travellers looking for cheap domestic fares who can live with a schedule that has changed often in recent years.
The company traces back to ModiLuft, an air taxi business started by Satish Kumar Modi in 1984 that later flew scheduled services with technical help from Lufthansa and stopped flying in 1996. Ajay Singh bought the dormant company in 2004 and relaunched it as a low-cost carrier. The first SpiceJet flight, Delhi to Mumbai, took off on 24 May 2005, and by July 2008 it was India's third-largest budget airline by market share.
Kalanithi Maran's Sun Group bought a 37.7 percent stake in June 2010 and ran the airline for the next few years. SpiceJet returned to profit at the end of 2012, then slid into heavy losses, with net losses of 1,003 crore rupees in 2014 and 687 crore rupees in 2015. In January 2015 Sun Group sold out and control went back to Ajay Singh, who remains chairman and managing director.
The worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic hit SpiceJet harder than most Indian airlines.
At the end of December 2024 only 28 of its aircraft were flying.
SpiceJet holds about 4 percent of India's domestic market and serves around 35 destinations from Delhi and Hyderabad. It reported revenue of 8,524 crore rupees in 2024 with an operating loss of 423 crore rupees, and employed 6,484 people in 2025. The fleet was 74 aircraft in 2019, and the airline has set a goal of 100.
SpiceJet began international flying on 7 October 2010 from Delhi. Its overseas network is centred on the Gulf, with routes such as Delhi to Dubai. It is not in a global alliance but has codeshare agreements with Emirates and Gulf Air, which carry passengers beyond the Gulf.
SpiceXpress, the cargo division, launched in September 2018 and received its first Boeing 737-800 converted freighter in September 2019. The airline also ran Spice Shuttle, a seaplane service between Ahmedabad and Kevadia under the government's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, from October 2020 to April 2021.
