What to expect

IndiGo is India's largest airline, run by InterGlobe Aviation from its head office in Gurgaon, Haryana, with its main hub at Delhi. It flies more than 2,700 daily flights to about 137 destinations, 94 in India and 43 abroad, and suits travellers looking for a frequent, low-fare flight inside India or to the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Europe.

Founders and the 2006 first flight

IndiGo was founded in 2005 by Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal, and made its first flight on 4 August 2006, from Delhi to Imphal via Guwahati. It started as a low-cost carrier and listed on the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange after its 2015 share sale. In August 2025 it held about 64.2 per cent of India's domestic air market, more than any other Indian airline.

Leadership changed in 2026. Chief executive Pieter Elbers resigned in March, and Willie Walsh, the former head of IATA, took over on 3 August 2026.

Delhi hub and mostly domestic routes

Delhi is the main hub, with large bases at Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Kochi. Most flights are domestic, and the international network reaches the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Europe.

IndiGo is not in an alliance. It codeshares with Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and others, so you can connect onto their long-haul flights on one ticket.

December 2025 disruption

In December 2025 IndiGo cancelled nearly 4,500 flights over ten days after problems adjusting crew schedules to new duty-time rules. If you are flying at a busy time, keep an eye on your booking and the airline's flight status page.

Travel tip: IndiGo is strict about cabin bag size and weight. Check the limits for your fare on goindigo.in and use web check-in before you reach the airport.

Cheap tickets

A few booking habits that tend to cut the cost of flying IndiGo.

  1. 01

Be flexible with your IndiGo dates

IndiGo fares are often lower on midweek departures. Search a spread of dates around your trip to find the cheaper days.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Diwali, Christmas–New Year and the summer holidays (May–June) are peak travel times in India.

    Diwali & summer
  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

The lowest 6E fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

    Baggage & changes
  4. 04

    Book early on metro routes

Fares between India’s big cities rise steeply in the last days before departure.

Prices & payment

IndiGo began as a low-cost airline and most seats are economy, with meals and extras sold separately. Since 2024 it has added IndiGoStretch, a cabin with business-style seats on selected routes, so it now offers more choice than a pure budget carrier.
