What to expect

Uzbekistan Airways (IATA HY) is the state-owned flag carrier of Uzbekistan, headquartered in Tashkent and flying from Tashkent International Airport. It serves about 58 destinations, linking Samarkand, Bukhara and other Uzbek cities with Russia, Turkey, China, India, Southeast Asia, Europe and New York. It suits visitors to the Silk Road cities and travellers connecting through Tashkent between Europe and Asia.

From Aeroflot division to national airline

Uzbekistan Airways was founded on 28 January 1992, a few months after independence, and began flying on 31 May 1992, taking over the Uzbek division of the Soviet airline Aeroflot. It inherited Soviet-built aircraft and began replacing them almost at once: two Airbus A310s came in 1993, and in 1995 the airline placed its first Boeing order, for 767-300ERs and a 757.

The modernisation took two decades. The last Antonov An-24 left in 2012 and the A310s in 2013. The first Boeing 787-8 arrived in August 2016 and opened the flagship Tashkent to New York JFK route. When the Ilyushin Il-114 turboprops retired in May 2018, the main fleet became all-jet. The first A320neo followed in March 2019 and the first long-range A321LR in February 2022.

Tashkent and the route network

Tashkent is the hub for almost every flight. Domestic routes reach Samarkand, Bukhara, Namangan, Andijan and other regional cities, and international routes cover Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, China, India, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America.

The network is growing fast. Recent additions include Andijan to Istanbul, Namangan to Krasnodar and Namangan to New Delhi, new Chinese routes to Hangzhou and Shenzhen, and Tashkent to Atyrau in Kazakhstan from 30 March 2026. Codeshare partners include airBaltic, Asiana, Azerbaijan Airlines, China Southern, Etihad, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines and Turkish Airlines, and about 40 interline partners, among them Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines, extend the reach further. The airline is not in a global alliance.

Passenger growth from 2014 to 2024

Passenger numbers have more than doubled in a decade, from 2.6 million in 2014 to over 6 million in 2024, with an 83 per cent load factor and profit up nearly 70 per cent to about US$56 million. In 2025 the airline set a record of 6.6 million passengers on more than 52,000 flights and reported a profit above US$100 million. The chairman expects the fleet to roughly double by 2030, and big orders for Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A321neos back that plan.

State ownership and group companies

The Government of Uzbekistan owns the airline, and Shukhrat Khudaykulov is chief executive. The group includes a subsidiary, Uzbekistan Airways Express, and also operates VIP A320s and cargo aircraft.

The fleet that flies today is young.

Stopping over in Tashkent

Tashkent sits between Europe and South and East Asia, so Uzbekistan Airways fares can make a stop in Uzbekistan an easy add-on. Check visa rules for your passport before you plan to leave the airport, and check the minimum connection time if you are changing flights, since it varies by route. Domestic flights to Samarkand and Bukhara leave from the same Tashkent hub.
