What to expect

Air Macau (IATA: NX, ICAO: AMU) is the flag carrier of Macau, the special administrative region on the south coast of China. Its hub is Macau International Airport, and its majority owner is Air China. It flies an all-Airbus narrow-body fleet to cities in mainland China and to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, and suits travellers who want to fly straight into Macau without going through Hong Kong.

A young airline for a territory without one

Macau had no regular fixed-wing air service from 1962 until the airline arrived, apart from helicopters, and between 1948 and 1961 it had only seaplanes. Air Macau was founded on 13 September 1994 and began commercial flights on 9 November 1995, with first routes to Beijing and Shanghai. In 2002 it launched its first pure freighter service, between Taipei and Shenzhen via Macau.

Air China's majority stake

Air China holds about 66.9% of Air Macau. It built up that stake in 2009 and 2010 by buying shares from Macau-linked investors and from TAP Air Portugal, an early partner. Air Macau now works as part of the Air China group.

Routes to mainland China and the region

Published records give 24 to 29 destinations, with 15 of them in mainland China, including Beijing, Shanghai and other large cities. Regional routes reach Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. Air Macau carried about 1.1 million passengers in 1999 and 2.12 million in 2014.

Connecting to Air China and entry rules

Air Macau tickets can combine with Air China flights for onward connections into mainland China. Check the entry rules for Macau and for any onward destination before you fly, because they are set separately.
