Antalya
Antalya travel guide
Turquoise sea, Roman ruins and an Ottoman old town.
Antalya is the hub of Turkey's Mediterranean coast, with the historic Kaleiçi old town, cliff-top views, the Düden Waterfalls and long beaches at Lara and Konyaaltı. Nearby are the ancient sites of Perge, Aspendos and Termessos, and the resorts of Belek, Side and Kemer. Visit from May to October and allow 4 to 7 days. Costs are good value, and many passports need no visa; others use evisa.gov.tr.
Antalya is the main city of Turkey's Mediterranean 'Turquoise Coast', set on cliffs above the sea with the Taurus Mountains behind. Its old quarter, Kaleiçi, has Ottoman houses, a Roman harbour and Hadrian's Gate, and the city's archaeological museum is one of the best in Turkey.
Antalya is the gateway to beach resorts such as Lara, Belek, Side and Kemer, and to ancient sites including Perge, Aspendos and Termessos. Summers are long, hot and dry; the sea is warm from June to October.

Visas and entry
Visa-free or e-Visa
On many passports, arriving in Antalya needs no visa for stays up to 90 days in 180; other travellers buy an e-Visa online first.
- Apply online
- evisa.gov.tr (the only official site)
- Passport validity
- At least 150 days from arrival for most visitors
Getting there
Antalya Airport
Antalya Airport (AYT), about 13 km east of the centre, is one of Turkey's busiest, with many flights from Europe in summer.
- To the city
- Tram (AntRay), buses, taxis and transfers
- To resorts
- Belek about 30 minutes, Side about 1 hour, Kemer about 1 hour
Money and costs
Lira, cards, cash
Hotels, restaurants and most shops in Antalya accept cards. Small cafés, market stalls and tips still need cash.
- Withdraw lira from bank ATMs and skip the airport exchange counters.
- Tipping around 10% is customary in restaurants.
- Prices are often quoted in euros in resort areas; paying in lira is usually cheaper.
Health and vaccines
Good private hospitals
As a major resort, Antalya has good healthcare. Drink bottled water and take the summer sun seriously.
- Hospitals
- Private hospitals in all major cities and resorts
Staying safe
Scams and crowds
Antalya is generally safe. Mind your pockets in crowded spots and check prices in bars and taxis.
- Emergency
- 112
- Agree on a taxi meter before you set off, or use the BiTaksi app.
- Check your government's advice for areas near the Syrian border.

Getting around
Trams, buses, car
Trams and buses serve the city; a hire car or tours are best for ancient sites and the coast.
- Antalyakart
- Card for city buses and trams
- The airport is about 13 km east, with T1 (domestic) and T2 (international) 1.6 km apart; tram 1A runs from T1 to İsmetpaşa in about 50 minutes but does not call at T2.
- Bus 600 links both terminals with the Otogar every 30 minutes, and bus 800 serves the resort strips every two hours; a taxi is easiest for Lara.
- Trams and buses take contactless cards or the Antalyakart, sold at tram kiosks, whose app tracks your bus.
- The heritage T2 tram runs old Nuremberg cars along the coast between the museum and Kaleiçi.
- Bus KL08 links Konyaaltı beach with Düden.
- Taxis wait at ranks or come through BiTaksi and iTaksi, and driving in the centre is a chore.
- The Otogar is 6 km north-west of the centre, and coach tickets may include a downtown transfer.
SIM and internet
Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom
Antalya Airport and operator shops sell tourist SIMs on production of a passport. A foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM for over 120 days needs registering.
- Networks
- Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom
Culture and etiquette
Hospitality and mosques
Turkish hospitality means tea is offered almost everywhere. Visitors may enter mosques outside prayer times.
- Cover shoulders and knees in mosques; women cover their hair
- Remove shoes before entering a mosque

- Visiting mosques during Friday midday prayers
- Insulting the Turkish state or Atatürk, which is a criminal offence

Antalya weather by month
Antalya has hot, dry summers near 35°C and mild winters with heavy December and January storms. Use the months to compare sea-season heat with the stormy winter.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Antalya (Turkish State Meteorological Service 1991–2020 normals, via Wikipedia).
Kaleiçi, the ancient sites and beach days over four days to a week
Four days to a week suits Antalya. Two days cover Kaleiçi old town, the Roman harbour, the Antalya Museum and a boat to the Düden Waterfalls. Four days add Perge, Aspendos and Termessos, and a week leaves time for beach days at Konyaaltı or Lara. Decide early whether to sleep in Kaleiçi or a beach resort.
Treat the city as two places: a compact walled old town on the cliffs, and a resort coast running off on either side. Decide early which one you sleep in. From a room in Kaleiçi you can walk to the harbour and the museum, while the big Lara hotels sit near the airport and a long way from the old streets.
- Two days: enter Kaleiçi through Hadrian's Gate and wander past the Fluted Minaret Mosque and the clocktower down to the Roman harbour, then give the afternoon to the Antalya Museum. Next morning, take a boat from the harbour along the cliffs to the Düden Waterfalls, where the river drops straight into the sea.
- Four days: add Perge and Aspendos, easily combined on one early start; the Roman theatre at Aspendos is among the best preserved anywhere. Give another morning to Termessos up in the mountains.
- A week: mix sightseeing with beach days on the pebbles of Konyaaltı, with the mountains behind, or the sand at Lara. Side and Kemer are each about an hour from the airport, and Belek, the golf resort, is half that.
All-inclusive beach hotels fill early for summer, so book them well ahead. Harbour boat crews quote freely: never accept the first price or the first departure time you are given.
A taxi for a few hours covers Perge, but for Aspendos and Termessos a hire car or a tour works out better. Mountains hem the city in, so road trips inland are long: coaches to Cappadocia take about 8 hours via Konya, and a flight to Istanbul is far quicker than the bus.
Antalya's hot summers and the gentler months for ruins and swimming
Summer here is relentless. July and August reach about 35°C by day with almost no rain, nights average 23 to 24°C, and the mountains wrapped around the bay trap the heat. Spend those months in the water and see the ruins at opening time. The sea is the reason crowds still come: it reaches about 27°C at its warmest and stays swimmable well into autumn.
For sightseeing with a swim on the side, aim for May or late September to October. May brings 26°C and only light rain; October is still around 27°C with a warm sea, and the Golden Orange Film Festival is held that month. June is already hot at 32°C.
Winter is mild but genuinely wet. Between storms come bright, cool days with highs of 15 to 17°C. Perge and Aspendos are much quieter then, and you can have the theatres almost to yourself. Snow on the city is extremely rare.
March and April are the quiet shoulder. Afternoons reach 18 to 22°C, but the sea is still cool after winter.
Piyaz, hibeş and burnt-milk ice cream in Antalya
Antalya's best-known local dish is piyaz, boiled beans dressed with tahini, garlic and walnuts, often eaten with şiş köfte. Try hibeş, a cumin-spiced tahini spread, grida grouper and yanıksı dondurma, an ice cream with a burnt-milk flavour. Canteens around the Muratpaşa Mosque are cheap, and Kaleiçi restaurants charge more.
Piyaz comes first on any list of local dishes. The local version dresses boiled beans with tahini, garlic and walnuts. Piyazcı Sami downtown serves it with şiş köfte, spiced meatballs grilled around a skewer.
Look also for hibeş, a sharp spread of tahini spiced with cumin. Tandır kebap and cold olive-oil dishes fill the lunch counters, and grida, the white grouper, turns up on fish menus.
Snacks carry the local signature. Yanıksı dondurma is an ice cream with a burnt-milk flavour, bağaça a spiced tahini pastry, and tirmis the boiled lupin seeds people nibble on the seafront. The streets around the Muratpaşa Mosque are lined with cheap canteens. Kaleiçi restaurants charge more for garden settings and fresh fish, and Hasanağa is a long-running family place for traditional cooking.
Kaleiçi is a lived-in quarter with working mosques, so cover up to go inside and keep swimwear for the beach. Tip about 10% in restaurants, and ask prices before ordering where no menu is shown. The Doluca vineyard stands by the airport entrance.
Travelers are asking
Yes. Aspendos is about 45 km east, an easy half-day trip, often combined with Perge.

General
Konyaaltı for a city beach with mountain views, Lara for resorts, and Kaputaş near Kaş for a day trip.
Combine them on one early start. A taxi hired for a few hours works for Perge, but for Aspendos and Termessos a hire car or a tour works out better.
Take a boat from the old harbour along the cliffs to the Lower Düden Falls, where the river drops straight into the sea. Bus KL08 also links Düden with Konyaaltı.
Very hot. July and August reach about 35°C by day with nights of 23 to 24°C, and the sea warms to about 27°C, so plan ruins for opening time and spend the afternoons in the water.
Yes, for the ruins and the old town. Winter is mild with highs of 15 to 17°C between storms, though December and January are wet, and Perge and Aspendos are almost empty.
