Arab Music Festival, Cairo Opera House guide
Anyone wanting to hear classic and contemporary Arabic song live should plan for the second half of October, when the 34th edition runs from 20 to 30 October 2026. Egypt's best-loved voices perform with a full Arab orchestra, young oud players and singers compete, and scholars debate. The nightly line-up is announced shortly before the first concert, so book once it appears.
Each autumn the Cairo Opera House hands its stages to Arabic song. The Arab Music Festival and Conference puts Egypt's best-loved voices in front of a full Arab orchestra night after night, holds contests for young oud players and singers, and invites scholars to argue about where this music came from and where it is heading.
For a visitor it is the easiest way to hear the region's great repertoire live and in its proper setting. Concerts move between the old tarab classics and current hits, and this is music played for a home audience, not a show staged for tourists.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
The Main Hall keeps a formal dress code. Men are usually expected in a jacket and should pack one even for a short trip; trainers and shorts will look out of place. Whatever you wear, aim for evening smart.
Once inside, treat the evening as a concert, not a gig. Switch phones to silent, keep filming to a minimum, and save conversation for the interval. If you are unsure when to clap, follow the people around you.
Security at the Opera House gate is thorough and slow on busy nights. Arrive with time to spare, travel light and leave anything bulky at the hotel. Plan the journey back before you go in. Women riding the metro home can use the two carriages kept for them in the middle of each train, although one of the pair opens to all passengers after 9 pm. Services stop around 1 am.
Researchers and working musicians present papers while the concerts are being rehearsed.
In 2026 young oud players competed on 25 October and the Ratiba El-Hefny contest for singers opened the next day.
A few out-of-town shows, such as the Damanhour Opera House night, begin an hour before the Cairo concerts.
The headline evenings start at 8 pm, as do the Arab Music Institute's nights. Be in your seat before the orchestra tunes up.
The 2026 run ends with a closing concert on Friday 30 October.
The most useful planning tool is the Opera House's own calendar. Each evening is listed with the singer, the hall and the start time, and the big names are easy to spot. In the first week of the 2026 festival the Main Hall bill ran from Amal Maher on 22 October to Tarek El Faqia sharing the stage with Ghada Ragab on the 23rd, Ali El Haggar on the 24th, and Nadia Mostafa with Mohamed El Helw on the 25th.
Choose by hall as much as by voice. The Main Hall takes the stars and the full orchestra. Over at the Arab Music Institute the same week was given to chanting troupes and heritage ensembles, smaller evenings that suit anyone curious about religious song and older repertoire.
Sleep close. Zamalek, on the northern part of the same island, has the widest choice: the Cairo Marriott, set in a former royal palace, and the Sofitel El Gezirah at the top end, with Horus House and the Golden Tulip Flamenco for tighter budgets. A room there keeps the ride home after the last song short, and our Egypt travel guide can help with the days before or after Cairo.
Programmes swing between classic tarab and newer Arabic pop. Many nights put a full Arab music orchestra behind the singer, so even a familiar song gets a large, layered sound.
Each edition now honours a single figure. The 2026 festival is dedicated to Hany Shaker, the singer who died in May, and its opening concert was planned as his tribute.
The building has its own story. Cairo's first opera house, the Khedivial, opened in 1869. The present complex was a gift from Japan, agreed after President Mubarak visited the country in 1983 and inaugurated on 10 October 1988. Its Main Hall rises over four levels with 1,200 seats, and the grounds also hold an open-air theatre. Walking in for an evening of Arabic song, you are using a hall built by a foreign government for exactly this kind of national music.
Cairo International Airport is in Heliopolis, about 15 km north-east of downtown. Travellers from Bangladesh can compare Dhaka to Cairo flights.
Uber operates in Cairo and is the easiest option with luggage. White taxis have meters, which drivers are required to switch on, so ask before you set off. A shuttle links the terminals with the airport bus station for cheaper city buses to Tahrir Square.
Opera station on Line 2 sits on the southern tip of Gezira beside the Opera House grounds. Sadat, where Line 2 meets Line 1, is one stop away, and a short ride of up to nine stops costs LE10.
We have no hotels listed in Cairo yet, so the ones below are in Giza, the nearest area where we list hotels. The next edition runs from 19 October to 29 October 2027. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, since rooms close to the festival are the first to go.
Giza
Late October is warm and dry in Cairo, with an average high of about 30°C and a low of 20°C, and rain is almost unheard of: under 1 mm for the whole month (1991-2020 normals at Cairo airport).
Evenings are mild enough to walk between the metro and the Opera House without a jacket, but the concert halls are air-conditioned.
Met at arrivals at Cairo International Airport (CAI) and driven door to door to Cairo Opera House.

General
The Opera House calendar also listed Amal Gharbi with Walid Tawfik on 21 October, and Medhat Saleh with his band at the Sayed Darwish Theatre on the 22nd. Reham Abdel Hakim was among the performers named in advance.
Yes. Some nights move to the Sayed Darwish Theatre in Alexandria and the Damanhour Opera House, so check the hall on your ticket before you set off.
The 2025 festival, dedicated to Umm Kulthum, packed 41 concerts by 83 artists into 10 days, one night shorter than the 2026 run.
Both are open to performers aged 17 to 40. In 2026 the rules were widened so that non-Egyptians living in Egypt could also take part.
It is in central Cairo, away from the main Opera House grounds on Gezira, and is run by the Opera House as a venue built for Arab music performance.
The academic sessions use the Opera House's Small Hall, a single-floor room of up to 500 seats normally used for chamber music and recitals.
The 2026 festival is the 34th edition, so the festival has been part of Cairo's cultural year for more than three decades.
It is close to the Opera House and stays open from 9 am until midnight, so a late-afternoon trip up its 187 metres fits neatly before an 8 pm start. Queues for the lift can be long.
Timing & weather
Expect it again next autumn. No dates had been announced at the time of writing, and the night-by-night programme normally follows only at the press launch.
