Firefly is the regional airline of Malaysia Aviation Group, the company that also owns Malaysia Airlines. It was founded in March 2007 and flew its first service, Penang to Kota Bharu, on 3 April that year with two Fokker 50s. Penang remains its home base, and its office is in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The airline now runs two separate operations. ATR 72-500 turboprops fly from Subang, the old Kuala Lumpur airport close to the city, to places such as Langkawi, Alor Setar, Kota Bharu and Singapore Seletar. Boeing 737-800 jets moved from Subang to Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA) on 19 August 2025, and Firefly also has a jet operation in Penang and a secondary hub at Kota Kinabalu for Borneo flights.
Thailand has two Firefly routes. Penang to Phuket links the island state with the Andaman coast, and Kuala Lumpur to Krabi opened on 17 November 2025 as a daily jet service from KLIA Terminal 1. Compare options on Penang to Phuket flights, Phuket to Penang flights, Kuala Lumpur to Krabi flights and Krabi to Kuala Lumpur flights.
The Krabi route connects neatly with long-haul arrivals at KLIA, including Malaysia Airlines flights and routes such as Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur. Passengers connecting from Malaysia Airlines on one ticket get their bags checked through. Because Phuket flights start in Penang and Krabi flights in Kuala Lumpur, an open-jaw trip is easy to build: fly into Krabi from KLIA, cross to Phuket by road or ferry, and return through Penang.
Firefly was founded on 16 March 2007 and flew its first service on 3 April with 50-seat Fokker 50s. Malaysia Airlines ordered ten ATR 72-500s for it in June 2007, and the Fokkers were gone by the end of 2008. The airline tried jets once before: it ordered Boeing 737-800s in 2010 and flew them from January 2011 to Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Bandung and Surabaya, but in August 2011 it announced the end of jet flying, citing competition and the cost of two fleets. The 737s went back to Malaysia Airlines.
Jets returned in the early 2020s on routes from Penang. Kota Kinabalu became a secondary hub in 2023, when Firefly took over jet routes inside Borneo, and on 16 June 2024 it flew to Kuala Lumpur International again for the first time since 2011. Firefly is wholly owned by Malaysia Aviation Group, codeshares with Malaysia Airlines and uses the ICAO code FFM.
