Phuket to George Town flight guide
AirAsia and Firefly link Phuket International Airport (HKT) in southern Thailand with Penang International Airport (PEN) in northern Malaysia. The 381 km flight takes about 1 hour, a quick way from the Andaman beaches to George Town's heritage streets and food stalls.
Both are low-cost airlines, so basic fares cover a cabin bag only; add checked baggage when you book.
The airport is at the island's north end. AOT lists an Airport Bus Express from Patong Beach between 06:00 and 18:30 and an hourly bus from Phuket Town between 09:15 and 21:15. The Phuket Smart Bus serves the west-coast beaches through Kata, Karon and Kamala. Allow at least an hour from Patong or Kata and arrive about three hours before departure.
Penang International Airport is at Bayan Lepas in the south of the island, about 16 km from George Town. Rapid Penang buses 102, 401 and 401E stop at the terminal; route 401 costs about RM2 to RM3, with tickets from the counter on the ground floor of the arrivals hall, and route 102 runs via KOMTAR to Batu Ferringhi with many stops. Airport taxis use prepaid coupons from the arrivals counters, with George Town at about RM38 and a 50% surcharge between midnight and 06:00; city taxis may not pick up at the airport. A Grab to George Town costs about RM30, and drivers wait in the multilevel car park across from Arrival Door 1. Malaysia's entry rules depend on nationality; see our Malaysia visa page.
Malaysia is one hour ahead of Thailand (UTC+8 against UTC+7). Travellers from elsewhere usually reach Phuket through Bangkok; see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page for one example.

Getting there
About 1 hour in the air. The two airports are 381 km apart in a straight line; actual times vary a little by airline, aircraft and wind.
Separate international and domestic terminals, side by side. International flights such as this one use the international side, so allow time for immigration before boarding.
Penang International Airport is at Bayan Lepas in the south of the island, roughly 16 km from George Town. Rapid Penang buses and Grab cars run to the heritage centre and the Batu Ferringhi beach hotels.
Most international travellers come via Bangkok and take a domestic flight south, or finish a Thailand trip on the Andaman coast and fly out from Phuket.
About 16 km. Grab cars take 30 to 40 minutes to the heritage centre, and Rapid Penang buses cover the same route more cheaply.
For an international flight, aim to arrive about three hours before departure. Check-in counters close well before the flight, and immigration queues in Thailand can be long at busy times.
Prepaid airport taxis charge about RM38 to George Town, with a 50% surcharge from midnight to 06:00. A Grab costs about RM30.
Rapid Penang route 102, via KOMTAR. It has many stops, so it is slow.
General
The clock moves one hour forward from Thai time (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
What's included
It depends on the airline. AirAsia and Firefly are low-cost carriers whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book.
Visa & documents
Penang is part of Malaysia, so Malaysian entry rules apply, along with the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. See our Malaysia visa page.
Stay & facilities
Meals and drinks are sold on board and are not included in the basic fare. Pre-ordering online is usually cheaper and gives a wider choice, including halal options on many routes.
