What to expect

Malaysia Airlines is the flag carrier of Malaysia, flying from its hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport to domestic cities across Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo and to about 69 destinations in Asia, Europe and Oceania. It suits travellers heading to Malaysia and those connecting through Kuala Lumpur on a oneworld ticket between Australia, Asia and Europe.

From Malayan Airways to Malaysia Airlines

The airline traces its roots to Malayan Airways Limited, incorporated in Singapore in 1937, which began flying in 1947. It became Malaysian Airways in 1963 and Malaysia-Singapore Airlines in 1966. In 1972 the two countries split the airline, and the Malaysian side began flying as Malaysian Airline System (MAS) on 1 October 1972. It was the first Southeast Asian airline to fly to South Africa after apartheid ended.

The company was rebuilt in September 2015 as Malaysia Airlines Berhad, and it returned to profit in 2023.

Ownership and group

Malaysia Airlines belongs to Malaysia Aviation Group, owned by the state investment fund Khazanah Nasional. Group businesses include Firefly, a low-cost airline, MASkargo for cargo, and Amal, which flies Hajj and Umrah charters for pilgrims. A plan called Long Term Business Plan 3.0 aims for a fleet of 116 aircraft by 2030.

KLIA hub and bases in Sabah and Sarawak

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) in Sepang, Selangor is the main hub. Kota Kinabalu in Sabah is a secondary hub, and Kuching in Sarawak is a focus city, so Borneo has its own web of domestic flights. Internationally the network covers Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and Europe.

Malaysia Airlines joined oneworld in February 2013, which links it with British Airways, Qatar Airways, Qantas and other members for connections, lounges and frequent flyer benefits.

Online Check-in

The four steps below take you from your Malaysia Airlines booking to the gate, whether you depart from KUL or another airport on its network.

  • Online check-in available
  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Online check-in for MH flights is on the official Malaysia Airlines website or app. You need the MH booking reference or e-ticket number and the passenger’s surname.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

Before leaving for the airport, check that your passport is valid and that you hold any visa or entry document needed at the other end of your Malaysia Airlines flight. Domestic MH passengers should bring a photo ID the airline accepts.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Malaysia Airlines closes its check-in counters before departure, and passengers who miss the cut-off can be refused boarding. Leave room for bag drop and security at KUL.

    Well before departure
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

At the airport, take your bags to the Malaysia Airlines bag-drop point. Collect a printed MH boarding pass there if you have not saved one to your phone.

Cheap tickets

A few booking habits that tend to cut the cost of flying Malaysia Airlines.

  1. 01

    Try midweek MH flights

If your dates can move, look at MH flights across the whole week. Midweek seats are often cheaper than weekend ones.

  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Malaysian school holidays are the busiest times for domestic and regional flights.

    Hari Raya & school holidays
  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

The lowest MH fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

  4. 04

    Compare Firefly

Malaysia Airlines’ sister airline Firefly flies some shorter routes, such as from Penang.
