What to expect

Batik Air Malaysia is a full-service Malaysian airline owned within Indonesia's Lion Air Group and headquartered in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya. It flies from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and the city airport at Subang (SZB) to domestic Malaysian cities and across Asia Pacific, South Asia and the Middle East. It suits travellers who want a meal and a checked bag on regional fares, with a small Business cabin on every aircraft.

From Malindo Air to Batik Air

The airline was founded on 27 September 2012 as Malindo Air, a joint venture in which Malaysia's National Aerospace and Defence Industries held 51 percent and Lion Air 49 percent. The first flight, Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu, took off on 22 March 2013, and the first international route, to Dhaka, opened on 28 August 2013.

On 28 April 2022 the carrier took the name Batik Air Malaysia, bringing it under the same brand as Batik Air in Indonesia. Today the parent companies are Sky One Investors Sdn Bhd and Lion Air Group, and the chief executive is Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy.

Hybrid model to full service

Malindo Air started as a hybrid airline, mixing low fares with some included extras. Under Chandran Rama Muthy it switched to a full-service model in 2019, and the Batik Air Malaysia name signals that position. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a sharp cut in flying from early 2020, and the network has been rebuilt since.

Which airports does it use?

Batik Air Malaysia flies from two airports in the Kuala Lumpur area. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the main hub for international and most domestic routes. Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang is the second hub and sits much closer to the city centre. The two airports are far apart, so confirm which one your ticket names before you arrange transport.

Where does Batik Air Malaysia fly?

The network covers domestic Malaysia, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, the Indian subcontinent, Australia and the Middle East. Countries served include Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. Wikipedia gives a figure of about 79 destinations in late 2024, while its route table also shows many services ended since then, so check the current route map before planning a trip.

Because the airline belongs to the Lion Air Group, one booking can connect onto Batik Air flights in Indonesia, which opens up Indonesian cities beyond Jakarta and Bali.

Codeshares with Batik Air, Emirates and others

Batik Air Malaysia is not in a global alliance. It has codeshares with Batik Air, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines, and interline deals with 11 airlines, including ANA, flydubai, KLM, Oman Air, Pakistan International Airlines, Qatar Airways and XiamenAir. These links let passengers from the Gulf and Europe connect in Kuala Lumpur onto Batik Air Malaysia's regional flights.

Pro tip: Check whether your flight leaves from KLIA or Subang before you book a taxi, and check what your fare includes for baggage, since allowances vary by route and fare type. If you want the Business cabin on a 737, confirm your flight is not one of the all-Economy aircraft.
