The Folk Art and Craft Museum (Shilpacharya Zainul Folk and Craft Museum) is a museum of rural Bengali crafts in the grounds of the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation at Sonargaon, Narayanganj, near Panam Nagar. Founded by the painter Zainul Abedin, it suits visitors who want to see village craft traditions on a day trip from Dhaka.

Zainul Abedin's foundation of 1975

The painter Zainul Abedin, known as Shilpacharya, set up the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation on 12 March 1975 in an old house in Panam Nagar. The government foundation preserves folk art, runs craft training and helps protect Sonargaon and Panam Nagar. In 1981 it moved to a 150-bigha site, and the museum opened in Sardar Bari, a mansion then nearly 100 years old.

Ten galleries of village crafts in Sardar Bari

Sardar Bari holds ten galleries of wood carving, paintings and masks, objects from ethnic communities, rural household scenes, folk instruments, terracotta, brass and copper work, iron tools and folk jewellery, all made and used by village people.

Two more galleries, a library and a boating lake

East of Sardar Bari, a newer building in folk style houses two more galleries. One uses models to show how Bangladeshi timber becomes crafts for sale. The grounds also hold a library, a crafts stage, gardens and a lake with boats, fishing and birdwatching.
