Ko Lipe travel guide
Reefs that escaped the tsunami, four beaches and boats to Langkawi
On Ko Lipe, a small island near the Malaysian border, white-sand beaches sit beside some of the healthiest reefs in Thai waters, and an Urak Lawoi' community still lives on Sunrise Beach. Go between November and April, when the boats run full schedules and seas are calm, and allow three or four nights. Prices are low, and many nationalities qualify for the 30-day exemption.
Ko Lipe is a small island in Satun Province at the far southern end of Thailand's Andaman coast, so close to Malaysia that Langkawi is about an hour and a half away by boat. It sits just outside the protected Tarutao National Marine Park, which explains why it has resorts and bars while Ko Adang and Ko Rawi to the north stay forested and mostly empty.
About 500 Urak Lawoi' people, a seafaring community whose ancestors settled here roughly three centuries ago, still live on the island, mostly in villages around Sunrise Beach on the east side. The name Lipe itself comes from Malay, a twisted form of Pulau Nipis, the thin island.
Choose a beach by mood. Pattaya Beach on the south coast is where the speedboats land and where the bars and dive shops cluster. Sunrise Beach is longer and quieter in the evening. Little Sunset Beach on the west side empties out once the light goes. Karma Beach on the north shore looks across the channel to Ko Adang. Walking Street runs inland between Pattaya and Sunrise, lined with cafes and hostels.
Underwater is the real draw. The reefs around Lipe came through the 2004 tsunami largely intact, and longtail trips run out to snorkel sites around Adang, Rawi and the smaller islets. Fishing is banned near the island; avoid fishing trips and anything sold as local catch. Stonefish have been spotted in the shallows; reef shoes are a sensible buy.
Boats run fully from November to May, and the Langkawi ferries operate from mid-October to the end of May. Outside that window services shrink and seas get rough. Three or four nights is about right.

Getting there
Speedboats and ferries only
No airport, no bridge and no car ferry: Ko Lipe is reached only by boat, and boats tie up at a floating plastic pontoon off Pattaya Beach. The closest airports are Hat Yai and Trang on the Thai mainland and Langkawi across the border in Malaysia. From the Thai side most people combine a flight to Hat Yai with a road transfer to Pak Bara pier. Full schedules run from November to May; in the shoulder months departures are cut back.
- From Pak Bara
- About 1.5 hours by speedboat; Pak Bara is a road transfer from Hat Yai airport
- From Langkawi
- About 1.5 hours from Kuah jetty or Telaga Harbour, mid-October to end of May; Thai immigration stamps passports on arrival
- From Trang
- About 2.5 hours by boat
- From Ko Tarutao
- About 45 minutes
- From Ko Lanta or Phuket
- About 3 hours and 5 hours on high-season island-hopping boats
- Speedboats slam hard over swell and passengers have suffered back injuries; with back or neck trouble, choose the larger ferries.
- Keep your national park ticket, bought on arrival; it also covers the nearby park islands.
- Langkawi boats hold passports until arrival, and the immigration queue on Lipe can be slow and sunny, so carry water.
Where to stay
Pick a beach by its evenings
Every bed on Lipe is within a short walk of the sea and of every other beach, so location matters less for convenience than for mood. Most rooms are bungalows and small resorts set behind the sand, with a cluster of hostels and guesthouses inland. Luggage is the one practical factor: the farther from the Pattaya pontoon, the more you will want the resort's pickup.
- Pattaya Beach
- Steps from the pontoon, the dive shops and the dinner tables on the sand; the busiest and loudest bay, with boat engines from early morning
- Sunrise Beach
- A long east-facing strand beside the Urak Lawoi' villages, quieter after dark and close to the hospital; a longer walk from where the boats land
- Sunset Beach
- A small west-coast cove for couples who want calm evenings and the last light; few places to eat beyond the resorts
- Walking Street
- Dorm beds and private rooms above cafes, mostly for travellers under 30 on a budget; no sea view and bar noise late
- Arriving on a late boat in high season without a booking is a gamble; reserve at least the first night.
Getting around
Walk, sidecar taxis and longtails
Lipe has no cars for hire and no motorbikes to rent, though locals ride plenty of them. Narrow concrete lanes link the beaches, and you can cross the whole island in under an hour. The heat and your luggage are the only real reasons to ride. Resorts send pickup trucks or golf carts to meet guests and their bags at the pontoon, so ask when you book.
- On foot
- Serendipity Resort to Patai Galah Beach, the two farthest walkable points, is about 3 km and 45 minutes
- Saleng
- Motorbike sidecar taxis with drivers in numbered blue vests; they wait near the 7-Eleven, and phone numbers are posted on electric poles
- Longtail boats
- Will run you from any point on the coast to any other at a flat fare, or out to the reefs
- Resort shuttles
- Pickup trucks and golf carts for guests' bags on arrival and departure
- Saleng drivers charge either per person for any single trip or by the hour; agree which before you set off.
- For the small beaches in the south-west, a longtail drop-off saves a hot walk.
Know before you go
What makes Ko Lipe worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Snorkelling off Ko Adang and Ko Rawi, over reefs that came through the 2004 tsunami.
- Sunset Beach in the evening, small, west-facing and quieter than Pattaya Beach.
- Walking the island from end to end in under an hour on narrow concrete lanes.
- Karma Beach, on the north shore facing the forested hills of Ko Adang.
- A longtail ride round the coast, when the water is flat in the early morning.
Good to know
- Speedboats slam over waves. If you have back or neck trouble, take the slower ferry.
- Wear reef shoes in the shallows; stonefish have been seen here.

Weather in Ko Lipe, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Ko Lipe are being researched.
Ko Lipe's beaches, offshore reefs and Karma Beach over four days
Four days suits Ko Lipe. Walk the island from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise and Sunset beaches on day one, snorkel the reefs around Ko Adang and Ko Rawi on day two, swim at Karma Beach on day three, and keep day four loose for the boat to Pak Bara and the drive to Hat Yai.
Walk from Pattaya Beach up Walking Street to Sunrise Beach, where Urak Lawoi' boats are pulled up near the villages, then cut across to Sunset Beach for the evening. The whole island takes under an hour to cross, so by dinner you will know its lanes.
On day two, book a longtail snorkel trip to the reefs around Ko Adang and Ko Rawi; leave early, when the water is clearest and the boats are fewer, and bring reef-safe sunscreen and water. Stop for lunch on one of the beaches inside the national park, where your park ticket covers entry.
Day three can be slower. Swim at Karma Beach on the north shore, looking over the channel to Adang's forested hills, or hire a longtail to drop you on one of the small south-western beaches near Batata and Galah. Try a dive with one of the shops on Pattaya Beach if the snorkelling has hooked you.
Keep the last day loose, because boat times change with the weather and the queue at the pontoon can be long. If you are flying out of Hat Yai International, take a morning boat to Pak Bara and book a later flight to Bangkok, since the road transfer adds a couple of hours.
Walking Street dinners, and asking where the seafood comes from
Most Ko Lipe visitors eat breakfast at their resort and dinner on Walking Street, the inland lane between Pattaya and Sunrise beaches. Fishing is illegal in the waters around the island, so ask where any seafood comes from or order curries such as massaman and gaeng som. 7-Eleven beer costs far less than bar drinks.
Walking Street is the busiest strip: cafes, bakeries, Thai kitchens and bars sit side by side, and it stays lively late. Pattaya Beach adds tables on the sand at night, and a restaurant on the hill above it serves Thai food with a view over the bay.
Because of the fishing ban, skip any dish sold as locally caught and anything offered as a fishing trip; if the answer on sourcing is vague, order massaman or the sour southern gaeng som.
Cocktails are the priciest order on the island. Many resorts with large water jugs will refill your bottle if you ask politely, which cuts down on plastic on a small island with nowhere to put it. Reggae bars on the beaches set the tone after dark.
Snorkelling Ko Adang, Ko Rawi and Tarutao National Marine Park
Ko Lipe's best snorkelling is on the reefs a few minutes offshore around Ko Adang and Ko Rawi, inside Tarutao National Marine Park. Longtail trips visit several sites in a half or full day. Calm water and the best visibility run from November to April, and Ko Tarutao itself is about 45 minutes away.
The reefs are among the healthiest in Thai waters, partly because the 2004 tsunami did little damage here. Trips also take in the smaller rocks between the islands and stop on empty beaches.
Ko Adang, directly north across a narrow channel, is part of Tarutao National Marine Park and almost entirely forest, with a ranger station and trails into the hills. Ko Rawi, to the west, is quieter still. Ko Tarutao, the largest island in the park, makes a long day trip or a night in park accommodation.
Currents here are mostly tidal, so conditions at a site change through the day; good boatmen and dive shops time their trips accordingly. Wear reef shoes in the shallows, where stonefish have been photographed, and never stand on coral. If you do need help, Lipe Hospital next to the school on Sunrise Beach has an English-speaking doctor, and several private clinics are dotted around the island.

Quick answers to the questions travelers ask most before visiting Ko Lipe.
Getting there
Take a road transfer from Hat Yai to Pak Bara pier, then a speedboat of about 1.5 hours. Combined tickets are sold at the airport and in town.
General
Three or four nights gives time for a snorkel trip, a day on each side of the island and a buffer for weather.
November to April, when the sea is calm and boats run daily from Pak Bara and Langkawi. From June to September services are sparse.
On foot, mostly, since no one rents scooters to visitors. Saleng sidecar taxis and longtail boats cover the longer hops between beaches.
Pattaya Beach for bars and dive shops, Sunrise Beach for a longer, quieter strand, and Sunset Beach for evening light and calm.
Very. The reefs around Lipe, Ko Adang and Ko Rawi came through the 2004 tsunami largely intact, and longtails run trips daily in season.
Yes, in high season. Island-hopping boats reach Ko Lanta in about 3 hours and Phuket in about 5.
Lipe has no cars for hire and no motorbikes to rent, though locals ride plenty of them. Narrow concrete lanes link the beaches, and you can cross the whole island in under an hour. The heat and your luggage are the only real reasons to ride.
Visa & documents
Yes. Ferries from Kuah and Telaga take about 1.5 hours and run from mid-October to the end of May, with passports stamped on Lipe.
From 15 September 2026, Thailand replaced its 60-day visa exemption with a 30-day exemption for tourism, covering about 60 countries; a one-time extension of up to 30 days may be possible at an immigration office. Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival, and others need an e-Visa before travel. All foreign visitors must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival.
Prices & payment
Yes, a park entry fee is collected on arrival. Keep the ticket, as it also covers the nearby park islands such as Ko Adang.
Health & safety
Lipe Hospital, next to the school on Sunrise Beach, has an English-speaking doctor, and several private clinics also have English-speaking staff.
Visitors to Thailand rarely run into serious trouble. Road accidents, especially on scooters, cause the most harm, followed by scams and strong sea currents in the monsoon. Ignore anyone who says the Grand Palace is closed, and swim only where no red flag flies.
Timing & weather
The best time to visit Ko Lipe is Nov to Apr. Calm seas, clear water and full boat schedules from Pak Bara and Langkawi.
- Best overall: November - April (Flat seas, good visibility for snorkelling and boats from every direction)
- Shoulder: May, mid-October (Boats still run but with fewer departures; check timetables daily)
- Low season: June - September (Rough seas, few boats and many places shut)
