Hat Yai to Bangkok flight guide
From Hat Yai you can fly nonstop to either of Bangkok's airports. Several airlines land at Don Mueang (DMK); two land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK). The flight covers about 776 km and takes roughly 1 hour 25 minutes.
Which Bangkok airport you want depends on what happens after you land. Don Mueang is the closer of the two to central Bangkok and the north of the city, and the SRT Red Line runs from the station opposite the terminal to Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes. Suvarnabhumi is Thailand's main international hub, so if Bangkok is only a stop on the way abroad, a Thai Airways ticket from Hat Yai lets you check your bag through and stay airside. Thai Airways' winter 2026/27 schedule lists 21 Hat Yai to Bangkok flights a week.
Hat Yai International Airport is 10 to 12 km south-west of the city along Highway 4135, usually 20 to 30 minutes by car. The city minibus links Hat Yai Bus Terminal with the airport, and taxis or a hotel car are the simplest choice with bags. Everything happens in one terminal that opens at 06:00 and closes at midnight. Arrive at least two hours before departure: every bag is scanned at the door, and the queue there builds on Friday and Sunday evenings and around Thai holidays. AOT is renovating the departure hall during 2026, so expect some temporary signage. Food choice airside is limited, so eat in town if you can.
Domestic flights at Don Mueang arrive in Terminal 2. Besides the Red Line, airport buses A1 to A4 run into the city, and taxis take 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. If you need Suvarnabhumi for an onward flight, a free shuttle leaves from Terminal 1, Gate 6, for passengers with a same-day ticket. At Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 26 minutes. See the Don Mueang airport guide and the Suvarnabhumi airport guide for maps and transport details, and the Hat Yai airport guide for the departure side.
Low-cost fares on Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet Air usually include a cabin bag only. If you are taking home dried seafood or market shopping from Hat Yai, buy checked baggage when you book. Thai Airways economy includes a checked bag.
Going back to HDY does not need a taxi. The microbus that links the airport with Hat Yai Bus Terminal runs from 06:00 to 23:30 and costs 60 baht for the whole line; it passes Prince of Songkla University, the Clock Tower and Kim Yong Market, so you can board in town. A looser local minibus covers a similar route for 20 to 30 baht and stops about 100 metres from the terminal. Hire cars are returned at the counter at the front of the building.
At Don Mueang the airport buses leave from the first floor of the domestic terminal, Gate 12. A1 and A2, towards Mo Chit and Victory Monument, cost 30 baht; A3 and A4, towards Lumphini and Sanam Luang, cost 50 baht. At Suvarnabhumi, bus S1 goes to Sanam Luang for 60 baht between 06:00 and 17:00.
If you were counting on Nok Air, its Hat Yai service to Don Mueang is paused between 27 October and 20 December 2026 because of rising fuel prices; Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air keep flying to Don Mueang in that period.

General
Choose Don Mueang if you are staying in Bangkok, especially in the north or old city, since it is closer and has the Red Line. Choose Suvarnabhumi if you are connecting to an international flight, ideally on one Thai Airways ticket.
Take the SRT Red Line from the station across the footbridge to Krung Thep Aphiwat, about 20 minutes, then the MRT. Airport buses A1 to A4 and metered taxis are the alternatives.
Yes. It leaves from Terminal 1, Gate 6, from about 05:00 to midnight, for passengers who can show a ticket for a flight from the other airport that day.
There are a few outlets on both sides of security but nothing elaborate, and nothing open overnight. A meal in town before you leave is the better plan; Hat Yai is known for its fried chicken and dim sum.
