In short

Kochikhali, often called Tiger Point, is a forest station and beach in the eastern Sundarbans' Sharankhola range, reached by a walk through deer meadows and mangrove forest. Access needs a Forest Department permit and a licensed boat, nearly always arranged by an operator, and visits are by daylight with a paid guard. It fills half a day on a three-day tour.

Kochikhali Sea Beach, known as Tiger Point, is a forest station and beach in the Sharankhola range of the Sundarbans, Bagerhat district, Bangladesh, east of Katka. It suits wildlife enthusiasts on a licensed launch tour who want a guarded walk through mangrove and meadow to an empty Bay of Bengal shore.

Inside the Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuary

Kochikhali lies on the edge of the Bay of Bengal inside the Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuary, one of three sanctuaries set up in the Bangladesh Sundarbans in 1977. It is part of the UNESCO Sundarbans World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1997. There is no road; launches from Khulna or Mongla reach it, usually after Katka.

Tiger pugmarks and the forest station

Royal Bengal tigers live in the surrounding forest and their pugmarks are sometimes found in the mud along the trail. Bangladesh's 2015 census counted 106 tigers in its part of the Sundarbans. The station has a forest office, a rest house and a small jetty, and it is the second main stop on most tours of the eastern forest.

Three km through forest and deer meadows

A trail of about 3 km runs from the station through sundari, keora and baen forest and opens into grassy meadows before the sea. These meadows stretch all the way to Katka, and herds of spotted and barking deer graze in them. The full walk between the two stations is about 8 km and passes Jamtola beach. Wild boar and monkeys are common.

The beach is wide, flat and empty, and many trees felled by Cyclone Sidr in 2007 still lie where they fell.
