Mandarbaria is a remote 8 km beach at the south-western edge of the Sundarbans in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, near the Indian border, reached only by a long boat journey through mangrove rivers. A Forest Department permit is required, and visits are by daylight. Adventurous travellers find an empty shore marked by deer and tiger tracks. Plan a full day by speedboat or an overnight trip.
Mandarbaria Sea Beach is a remote 8 km beach at the southern edge of the Sundarbans West forest division, Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira district, Bangladesh, near the border with India's Sundarbans. It suits adventurous travellers on a permitted boat trip who want an empty shore marked by deer and tiger tracks.
The beach faces the Bay of Bengal about 75 km by water from Burigoalini in Shyamnagar. It lies within the Sundarbans West Wildlife Sanctuary, one of three sanctuaries created in the Bangladesh Sundarbans in 1977, and inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 1997. There are no settlements.
The sand runs for about 8 km, with mangrove forest along the back and the open sea in front. Deer prints and wild boar tracks are common, and tiger pugmarks have been reported. The Forest Department lists the beach as an important nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles.
Boats leave from Nildumur ghat at Burigoalini and head south through the Kolagachia, Arpangashia and Malancha rivers, past dense mangroves where kingfishers, egrets and fishing eagles are common. An engine boat takes about 6 to 7 hours each way and a speedboat 2 to 2.5 hours. Burigoalini is about 70 km by road from Satkhira town, which buses reach from Dhaka via the Padma Bridge.
