View of the fort
See the fortress on its rocky islet just south of the beach.
In the hamlet of Cabasson in Bormes-les-Mimosas, this 350-metre sandy beach sits behind protective dunes and looks out to the Fort de Brégançon, the French president's summer residence. The beach is free and open at all times, though summer parking is usually paid. Half a day suits a quiet swim.
Plage de Cabasson is a sandy beach of about 350 to 375 metres in the hamlet of Cabasson, Bormes-les-Mimosas, on the Var coast between Hyères and Le Lavandou. It looks toward the Fort de Brégançon, the presidential retreat, and suits families and walkers who prefer a rural beach reached through vineyards over a resort seafront.
The approach is a small road that winds through the vineyards of Cabasson. Dunes protect the back of the beach, and pines give some calm, shaded corners, but in summer it is one of the busiest beaches in the commune. Services are limited, so bring water, food and shade. No adapted access is published; ask the Bormes-les-Mimosas tourist office.
Several small beaches share this coast, and you can walk between them. The Plage du Fort de Brégançon, about 450 m south, mixes sand and pebbles with old fishermen's huts and is the nearest to the fort. La Vignasse, about 600 m north-west, is quieter and wilder. The Plage du Luxembourg lies about 1 km south-east, and the Plage de la Reine Jeanne, named after the 1928 villa above it, is one of the most admired beaches in the Var but hard to reach on foot. Plage de l'Estagnol is 3 km away along the coastal path, and the Cap Bénat lighthouse about 3.5 km.
The fort stands on a rocky promontory off the tip of the hamlet, about 750 m from the beach. In 1968, at General de Gaulle's suggestion, it became an official residence of the President of the Republic. You cannot walk in from the beach. Visits are guided only, on foot, for groups of up to 20 people and last about three hours. Bookings must be made in advance online or at the Bormes-les-Mimosas tourist offices, with no ticket sales on site. In autumn 2026 the regional listing showed the visit as temporarily closed, so check with the tourist office (04 94 01 38 38) before planning around it.
