South Tangerang travel guide
BSD's convention halls, Bintaro's malls and a commuter-line hop to Jakarta
A fast-growing suburb south-west of Jakarta made up of planned towns such as BSD City, Alam Sutera and Bintaro Jaya, with the ICE exhibition centre, big malls and newer hotels. The drier months from June to September are easiest; most people need one or two nights around an event or as a quieter Jakarta base. Costs are low, and many passports qualify for a visa on arrival.
South Tangerang, usually shortened to Tangsel, is less a city than a cluster of new towns on Jakarta's south-western edge. It split from Tangerang Regency in 2008, and its growth comes from private developers who built whole districts from scratch: BSD City in Serpong, Alam Sutera to the north and Bintaro Jaya next to the Jakarta border.
There is no old centre to look for. What you find instead are wide boulevards, gated estates, international schools, a Monash University campus and some of the largest malls and exhibition halls in Indonesia. Most visitors come on business, for an event at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in BSD, or to see family who moved out of the capital for a bigger house.
For a traveller that has its advantages. Hotels here are newer and often better value than in central Jakarta, the streets are calmer and greener, and the KRL Commuter Line and the MRT terminus at Lebak Bulus link you to the city when you want it.
Set your expectations accordingly. Sights are few. The new towns sit far apart, so walking between them is not realistic. Daily life revolves around cars, malls and the lunch crowd at the noodle stalls of Pasar Modern BSD.

Best time to visit South Tangerang
Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
July and August see only about 90 to 105 mm of rain a month and highs of 32-33C; the best time for outdoor parks and toll-road travel.
Afternoon storms come and go; traffic slows sharply when they hit.
January averages over 350 mm, underpasses flood and rides to the airport can double in length.
When a big show such as the GIIAS motor show fills ICE BSD, usually from late July into early August, hotels in BSD and Alam Sutera sell out and the Serpong toll road jams; book early or stay in Bintaro.

Getting there
KRL from Tanah Abang to Rawa Buntu and the MRT at Lebak Bulus
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is about 25 km north. A taxi, Grab or Gojek car via the JORR 2 or Jakarta-Tangerang toll roads takes under an hour with clear roads, but two hours is not unusual at peak times. Airport bus services also run to BSD and Bintaro. Halim (HLP), on Jakarta's eastern side, is further, typically over an hour. By rail, the KRL Commuter Line from Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta runs south-west through Pondok Ranji and Jurangmangu (for Bintaro), Sudimara, Rawa Buntu (for BSD), Serpong and Cisauk (for ICE); Tanah Abang to Rawa Buntu takes about 35 to 45 minutes. For the south of Tangsel, the MRT North-South Line ends at Lebak Bulus, a short ride from Ciputat and Pamulang and about 30 minutes from Bundaran HI. Intercity buses to the rest of Java use the Lebak Bulus terminal. By car, the Jakarta-Serpong toll road is the main approach.
- Taxi, Grab or Gojek from CGK
- About 45 to 60 minutes, often two hours at rush hour
- KRL Commuter Line
- Tanah Abang to Jurangmangu, Rawa Buntu and Serpong, around 35 to 45 minutes
- MRT North-South Line
- Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, about 30 minutes
- Lebak Bulus terminal
- Intercity buses across Java, next to Ciputat
- Pay KRL fares with a contactless bank card or a stored-value card; single-trip cards involve deposit queues.
- Avoid the KRL toward Jakarta between 06:00 and 08:30 on weekdays, when carriages are packed with commuters.
Where to stay
BSD City, Alam Sutera, Bintaro Jaya or Ciputat
Each new town works almost like a separate city, so choose by what you are here for. BSD City is the obvious base for ICE events and has the most hotels, malls and restaurants. Alam Sutera, to the north, has business hotels near IKEA and the toll road. Bintaro Jaya is closest to Jakarta and has two KRL stations, which makes it the best pick if you will commute into the city. Ciputat and Pamulang are older and more crowded but close to the Lebak Bulus MRT.
- BSD City
- Next to ICE BSD, AEON Mall and The Breeze; a car or app ride is needed for anything else
- Alam Sutera
- Business hotels by the toll road and IKEA; few places to walk
- Bintaro Jaya
- KRL stations at Jurangmangu and Pondok Ranji, easy into Jakarta; traffic on Jalan Bintaro Utama
- Ciputat and Pamulang
- Close to MRT Lebak Bulus and cheap; busy, older streets
Getting around
Rawa Buntu station, BSD Link shuttles and ride-hailing
Most residents drive, and as a visitor you will mostly rely on Grab, Gojek or Blue Bird taxis, which are easy to find at malls and hotels. Within BSD City, the developer runs free BSD Link shuttle buses between the station area, the malls and ICE. Angkot minivans cover dozens of fixed routes across the city, but there are no set stops: raise your hand to board, and say 'kiri' when you want to get off. They are cheap but slow, and you need a local to tell you the right route. The KRL is useful to move between Bintaro and BSD, and a few Transjakarta routes cross the border toward South and Central Jakarta. Walking is pleasant inside a single estate, such as along BSD's parks, but crossing between towns on foot is impractical.
- Grab, Gojek and Blue Bird
- The default choice between the new towns
- BSD Link shuttle
- Loops between the Intermoda terminal at Cisauk station, the malls and ICE BSD
- KRL
- Pondok Ranji, Jurangmangu, Sudimara, Rawa Buntu and Serpong stations on one line
- Angkot
- Cheap minivans on fixed routes; hand signal to stop
- Allow extra time on Friday evenings and after heavy rain, when the toll exits clog.
Know before you go
What makes South Tangerang worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Pasar Modern BSD at breakfast, a covered market where noodle stalls and kopi counters fill up with locals from early morning.
- Taman Kota 1 in BSD, a shady city park with a jogging track that is busy at dawn and on Sunday mornings.
- The Breeze BSD, an open-air mall built around a lake, good for an evening meal outdoors.
- A shopping run to IKEA Alam Sutera, Indonesia's first branch, with its cafeteria serving Indonesian dishes next to meatballs.
Good to know
- There is no historic centre; plan around events, shopping and food.
- ATM scams have been reported on weekends, with men in uniform-like clothes offering to help; refuse any help at the machine.
- Toll-road traffic can turn 30 minutes into two hours, especially at the Serpong toll gates.
- Many Chinese noodle shops serve pork; ask for chicken (ayam) if you avoid it.

A weekend between Pasar Modern BSD, The Breeze and Bintaro Xchange
Spend a South Tangerang weekend the way residents do. Start Saturday at the bakmi stalls of Pasar Modern BSD, walk under the trees of Taman Kota 1, and spend the evening at The Breeze, an open-air mall by a lake; on Sunday head to Bintaro Xchange in Bintaro Jaya for shopping and food halls.
Saturday morning. Start where the locals do, at Pasar Modern BSD, a tidy covered market near the BSD office district. Find a seat at one of the bakmi stalls, order noodles with char siu or chicken and a glass of iced coffee, then walk the fruit and spice aisles while the market is at its busiest.
Late morning. Head to Taman Kota 1 for a walk under the trees, or, if you have children, spend the rest of the morning at Ocean Park BSD, a water park with slides and a wave pool. Check what is on at ICE BSD, the huge exhibition centre, which hosts trade fairs, concerts and the yearly GIIAS motor show.
Afternoon. Escape the heat inside AEON Mall BSD, whose Japanese supermarket and food hall draw shoppers from all over Jakarta, then move on to The Breeze, where shops and cafes line a lake.
Sunday. Cross to Alam Sutera for IKEA or the Mall @ Alam Sutera, or go east to Bintaro Jaya. Bintaro Xchange is a large mall with a park attached, and the streets around Sektor 9 have plenty of small cafes and restaurants for a late lunch.
Evening. If you are flying out, leave at least two hours for the airport ride on a Sunday night.
Bakmi stalls, Sundanese rice houses and the food halls of Serpong
South Tangerang's food reflects its middle-class, Chinese-Indonesian and student population, with the country's favourites more than a local cuisine. Order bakmi, egg noodles with minced meat and fried wontons, at Pasar Modern BSD, eat Sundanese rice-house spreads, and graze in the food halls of Serpong's malls.
South Tangerang's food tells you who lives here: middle-class families from all over Indonesia, a large Chinese-Indonesian community and plenty of students. The result is less a local cuisine than a very good spread of the country's favourites.
Noodles come first. Bakmi, the Chinese-Indonesian egg noodle, is served dry with minced meat, fried wontons and a bowl of broth on the side, often with pork and sometimes with chicken instead. The stalls in and around Pasar Modern BSD are the classic place to try it, and the best ones sell out before lunchtime.
For something Javanese or Sundanese, look for rice houses serving nasi timbel, rice wrapped in banana leaf with fried chicken, tofu, tempeh, raw vegetables and sambal. Ayam bakar, sweet grilled chicken, and soto of every regional style turn up in the food courts.
The malls are where many families actually eat. AEON Mall BSD has a busy Japanese-style food hall, and The Breeze and Bintaro Xchange have rows of mid-range restaurants with outdoor seating. In the evenings, street carts appear outside residential clusters selling martabak, both the savoury egg-and-meat version and the thick, sweet pancake.
Around the universities in Ciputat, cheap warung serve students all day. Prices are low, portions are big, and opening hours stretch late.
Into Jakarta by KRL and MRT, and out to Bogor's botanic gardens
South Tangerang lets you sleep somewhere calmer and reach Jakarta by rail. From Rawa Buntu or Jurangmangu the KRL reaches Tanah Abang in 35 to 45 minutes for connections into central Jakarta, the MRT starts at Lebak Bulus nearby, and Bogor's botanic gardens make an easy day by commuter train.
The great advantage of staying in South Tangerang is that you can sleep somewhere calmer and still reach the capital on rails, avoiding the toll-road traffic.
Central Jakarta. From Rawa Buntu or Jurangmangu, ride the KRL to Tanah Abang, around 35 to 45 minutes, and change for a Cikarang line train to Manggarai, then for a train toward Jakarta Kota. Get off at Juanda or Gondangdia for Monas and the National Museum, or continue to Jakarta Kota for Kota Tua, the old Dutch town around Taman Fatahillah. Coming back, avoid the evening rush between about 17:00 and 19:00.
South Jakarta. From Ciputat or Pamulang, take a ride to Lebak Bulus and the MRT north. Blok M, with its markets and food lanes, is about 15 minutes; Bundaran HI, at the end of the line, is about 30.
Bogor. The Kebun Raya Bogor botanic gardens, founded in 1817, make a good full-day trip. By rail you change lines in Jakarta, so the trip can take two hours each way; a car via the JORR toll road is usually quicker on weekdays.
Timing is everything. In the wet months from December to March, afternoon storms can flood underpasses and slow everything, so set off in the morning and plan to be back before late afternoon.
