Lombok travel guide
Volcano treks, surf beaches and the Gili Islands.
Lombok, east of Bali, offers Mount Rinjani treks, quiet south-coast beaches and surf around Kuta and Mandalika, waterfalls, Sasak villages and easy access to the car-free Gili Islands. Visit from May to October and allow 5 to 7 days. Costs range from homestays to villas, and many nationalities buy an e-VOA online.
Lombok lies east of Bali across the Lombok Strait and is quieter and less developed than its neighbour. It is dominated by Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, whose crater lake is a popular multi-day trek. Most people on Lombok are Sasak Muslims, and the island has many mosques alongside Balinese Hindu temples in the west.
The south coast around Kuta and Mandalika has dramatic beaches and surf, while the three Gili Islands off the northwest coast are car-free and known for snorkelling with turtles. The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit.

Lombok travel tips
Entry, cash, health, safety and where to stay, with notes on boats and drivers.
Visas and entry
e-VOA or visa-free
Lombok uses the same entry rules as the rest of Indonesia: most visitors buy the e-VOA online before travel, valid for 30 days and extendable once, and a few nationalities, mostly in ASEAN, enter visa-free. Travellers crossing from Bali by boat have already cleared immigration there.
- Apply online
- evisa.imigrasi.go.id (official)
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months
- Customs
- Electronic customs declaration (e-CD) before arrival
Getting there
Airport or fast boat
Lombok International (LOP) near Praya in the south has flights from Jakarta, Bali and Kuala Lumpur, and the hop to Bali takes well under an hour. Fast boats from Bali land at Teluk Nare, Bangsal, Senggigi or the Gilis, and slow car ferries run from Padang Bai to Lembar in four to five hours.
- To Kuta (Lombok)
- About 30 minutes by road
- Gili Islands
- Boats from Bangsal harbour or Teluk Nare
- From the airport, use the dark-blue Airport Taksi, about 25 minutes to Kuta; DAMRI buses run to Mataram, Senggigi and Selong, cash only.
- Car ferries from Padang Bai to Lembar run about hourly.
Money and costs
Rupiah and cash
Lombok is cheaper than Bali, especially in local warungs, which feed you better than tourist restaurants for far less. Cards work in hotels and larger places in Kuta, Senggigi and the Gilis, but carry cash for bemos, boats, DAMRI buses and village stalls.
- Use ATMs attached to banks or malls.
- Count change carefully at money changers; use authorised ones.
Health and vaccines
Water, food, mosquitoes
Drink bottled or filtered water on Lombok, use repellent against dengue and avoid locally made spirits. On Rinjani, nights near the summit can drop to about 4 °C, so pack a warm layer, and trek only with a certified guide, as park rules require.
- Hospitals
- International-standard hospitals in Jakarta and Bali
Staying safe
Roads, sea, volcanoes
Most Lombok visits are trouble-free. Avoid riding motorbikes after dusk in the south and in remote areas, wear a helmet, which is compulsory, and take morning boat crossings when the sea is calmest; earthquakes and volcanic activity are a background risk around Rinjani.
- Emergency
- 112
- Follow local warnings near active volcanoes.
- Drug offences carry very severe penalties, including death.
Where to stay
Best areas
Pick a Lombok base by activity: Kuta and Mandalika on the south coast for beaches and surf, Senggigi for the older resort strip, Senaru or Sembalun for Rinjani, and a Gili for snorkelling, with Trawangan for nightlife, Meno for near-silence and Air for a village feel.
- Kuta / Mandalika
- Beaches and surf
- Senggigi
- West-coast resorts
- Senaru / Sembalun
- Bases for Rinjani
- Gili Islands
- Car-free islands
Getting around
Car with driver or scooter
Hire a car with driver on Lombok, where public transport is limited and bemos stop by early evening. Grab and Gojek cover the airport and main towns, though taxi co-operatives block pick-ups at ports, and the Gilis have no motor vehicles: walk, cycle or take a horse-drawn cidomo.
- Rinjani
- Registered guide and porters required
- Grab and Gojek book cars and motorbikes; at ports, walk a little way out to meet your driver.
- Bluebird and Express run metered cabs around Mataram and up the west coast.
- Public boats from Bangsal reach the Gilis in 15 to 45 minutes; they leave when full and stop well before dark.
- A chartered speedboat from Teluk Nare takes 15 to 30 minutes.
- Ferries leave Labuhan Lombok for Poto Tano on Sumbawa.
SIM and internet
Telkomsel, Indosat, XL
Tourist SIMs from Telkomsel, Indosat and XL are sold at airports with your passport. On Lombok, data helps you book Grab or Gojek rides and boat transfers, though signal can be patchy on the Rinjani trails, and long-stay phones used with a local SIM must be registered.
- Networks
- Telkomsel, Indosat (IM3), XL
Culture and etiquette
Modesty and respect
About nine in ten Lombok islanders are Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees in villages and at mosques, and expect the dawn call to prayer near a mosque. Pass and receive things with the right hand, and during the fasting month many warungs outside tourist areas open only at dusk.
- Wear a sarong and sash at Balinese temples
- Use your right hand to give and receive
- Remove shoes before entering homes and mosques
- Touching people's heads
- Public displays of affection
- Stepping on small offerings (canang sari) on Bali's pavements

Mataram weather by month
Drier than Bali: about 290 mm of rain at Mataram in January and 54 mm in August.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Mataram (Climate-Data.org averages, via Wikipedia).
Lombok's south coast, Rinjani and the Gilis over five to ten days
Lombok divides into four zones: the south coast around Kuta and Mandalika for beaches and surf, Senggigi on the west coast, Mount Rinjani in the north and interior, and the three Gili Islands offshore. Five days suit the south; a week adds Senaru's waterfalls and a Gili; ten days fit the Rinjani trek.
The island is roughly round, about 70 km across, with the Sekotong peninsula trailing off to the south-west. The north and the interior belong to Mount Rinjani, with Senaru and Sembalun as trailheads and Tetebatu on the park's southern edge.
- Five days: stay near Kuta. Tanjung Aan is about 4 km east of town and Gerupuk, the surf bay, another few kilometres beyond. Mawun lies 8 km west, Selong Belanak about 17 km over a steep hill. On the way back to the airport, stop at Sukarara to watch the weaving.
- A week: three nights in the south and one in Senaru for the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls. Then spend three on a Gili. Pick Trawangan for nightlife, Meno for near-silence, or Air for a village feel.
- Ten days: fit in Rinjani. The standard trek to the crater rim takes two days and one night. Longer routes drop to the Segara Anak lake inside the 50 km² caldera.
Rinjani needs the most planning. Park rules require a certified guide, and porters carry the camping gear, so book through a licensed operator before you arrive. The park closes for its annual break from January to March. In the May to August peak, reserve Gili rooms plus boat transfers early. Many people combine the island with Bali, flying or sailing across the strait.
For Rinjani trailheads or a day touring Sasak villages, hire a driver; you can also rent a car.
Lombok's dry months, Bau Nyale and the fasting month
Visit Lombok from May to October for trekking and snorkelling, ideally in May, June or September to miss the school-holiday peak. It is drier than Bali, with about 290 mm of rain in January at Mataram against 54 mm in August, and Rinjani's climbing season runs from April to November, with summit nights near 4 °C.
Lombok is drier than its western neighbour, and wet-season rain tends to come as short bursts of an hour or two, seldom whole grey days. Even then, nights near the summit can drop to about 4 °C, so pack a warm layer for a trip that otherwise needs only shorts. July is the coolest month at sea level too, with lows of about 19 °C.
One date is pure Lombok. Bau Nyale falls on the 20th day of the tenth month of the Sasak calendar, which lands in February or March. Crowds gather on Seger Beach near Kuta, mainly before dawn, to scoop up sea worms that local legend says are the reincarnated Princess Mandalika. The festival can move when the Mandalika circuit is hosting a race weekend. Hotels in Kuta fill up then.
About nine in ten islanders are Muslim, and the fasting month changes the rhythm of daily life. Outside the tourist zones most warungs stay closed until the fast breaks at dusk. Dive shops on the Gilis cut back their schedules, although bars there still open at night. Eid al-Fitr, which closes the month, is a holiday of several days.
Ayam taliwang, plecing and Sasak manners
Sasak food on Lombok is chilli-led but rarely as fierce as you fear. Try ayam taliwang, chicken in a red paste of chilli, galangal, turmeric and tomato, plecing sauce sharpened with lengkare shrimp paste and vegetarian kelor soup, and eat nasi campur in warungs. Halal food is the norm, and alcohol is restricted in some towns.
Ayam taliwang is the island's best-known dish. Plecing is the spicy chilli and tomato sauce that dresses many plates, sharpened with a local shrimp paste called lengkare. Sares mixes chilli and coconut juice with the pith of the banana palm. Vegetarians can look for kelor (a hot vegetable soup), serebuk (vegetables tossed with coconut) and timun urap, a cucumber salad.
Everyday eating happens in warungs over nasi campur: rice with tofu, tempeh, vegetables and perhaps chicken or fish. Sambal sits at the edge of the plate; taste a speck before you take more.
Alcohol is easy to find in the tourist areas but restricted in some towns, notably Praya. The local drink is tuak, a palm wine of 2-5% strength.
Expect the dawn call to prayer if you sleep near a mosque. Sasak is the first language, and many older villagers understand little Indonesian. The island's name comes from the Sasak lomboq, meaning straight.
