Bangladesh National Zoo is in the Mirpur area of Dhaka. Covering 186 acres, it is the largest zoo in Bangladesh and is run by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. It draws about three million visitors a year.
The idea of a zoo in Dhaka was announced in December 1950, and a small collection of deer, peacocks, monkeys and an elephant was first kept at Segunbagicha near the High Court. It later moved to the Eidgah Maidan before opening at its present Mirpur site on 23 June 1974. It was called Dhaka Zoo until February 2015, when it was renamed Bangladesh National Zoo.
As of 2024 the zoo held about 2,150 animals from 191 species. Among the 58 mammal species are Bengal tigers, lions, elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, zebras, black bears and several kinds of monkey. The aviaries keep more than 1,500 birds of 91 species, from peacocks and parrots to ostriches, emus and vultures, and the two lakes inside the grounds attract migratory water birds every winter.
The zoo has faced criticism over animal welfare and management, and conditions vary between enclosures. Visitors who care about welfare may prefer to spend more time in the larger open enclosures and around the lakes.
