June has the longest days of the year in the north, and the length of your trip is the best way to choose where to spend them. A weekend fits Copenhagen or Edinburgh. A week suits Sardinia's beaches, Sri Lanka's east coast, Zanzibar or Vancouver. With two weeks or more, Iceland's Ring Road or the Canadian Rockies come into their own.

This guide is arranged that way, from the shortest trips to the longest, and ends with the places the June monsoon and rains make difficult.

Matching the place to the time you have

Temperatures are long-term averages for each city's main weather station. The summer solstice falls on 21 June, and the further north you go, the longer the evenings: Reykjavik never gets fully dark at this time of year, and dusk in Copenhagen and Edinburgh lasts until late. School holidays in Europe and North America mostly start in late June or July, so the first half of the month is usually calmer than the second.

A long weekend

Copenhagen, for harbour swims and late light

June is the sunniest month of the Danish year, with about eight hours of sunshine a day on average and rain on about nine days. Copenhagen spends it outdoors. The harbour baths at Islands Brygge open for swimming, the canal sides fill with café tables, and the city's cycle lanes carry as many bikes as cars.

In early June, the Distortion street-party festival takes over different districts on successive days (2 to 6 June 2027), and on 23 June Danes light bonfires on beaches and lakesides for Sankt Hans Eve.

A weekend is enough for the centre. Rent a bike, since the city is flat and the lanes are separated from traffic; signal with your arm before stopping or turning, as locals do. Spend a day on Nyhavn, a canal boat, Rosenborg and the Christiansborg tower, and an evening at Tivoli Gardens.

With a third day, take the coastal train north to Humlebæk for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and on to Kronborg castle at Helsingør, or cross the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, about 35 minutes by train. Denmark is expensive, and the best-known restaurants book up weeks ahead in summer.

Edinburgh, before the August festivals

Edinburgh in June is mild, with afternoons around 17°C and rain on about ten days, and much calmer than in August, when the Fringe fills every room in the city.

Over a weekend you can see Edinburgh Castle and walk the Royal Mile down to Holyrood, climb Arthur's Seat (about an hour up and down from the palace end, and best in the long evening light), and wander down to Dean Village along the Water of Leith. From 17 to 20 June 2027 the Royal Highland Show, Scotland's biggest farming and food show, takes place at Ingliston on the city's western edge.

Turning the weekend into a week opens up the Highlands of Scotland. Glencoe and Loch Ness can be done on a long day tour, but Skye and the west coast are a full day's drive from Edinburgh and deserve at least two nights. June brings midges to the west, so pack a repellent made for them.

Two nights in Edinburgh

  • Friday evening: arrive and walk the Royal Mile, when the day visitors have gone.
  • Saturday: the castle in the morning, booked for the first entry slot, then walk down through the Old Town to the National Museum of Scotland, and finish on Calton Hill for the view at dusk.
  • Sunday: climb Arthur's Seat early and walk along the Water of Leith to Dean Village and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

The airport tram runs to the city centre, so a car is not needed. For a Highlands extension, the train from Edinburgh to Inverness takes about three and a half hours and is a good starting point for Loch Ness and the north.

One week

Sardinia's south coast

Sardinia offers summer heat before the Italian holidays of August. Cagliari averages about 29°C in June with almost no rain, more than ten hours of sunshine a day, and a sea that reaches about 22°C, warm enough for long swims by the second half of the month. A week works if you stick to one region.

Base yourself in Cagliari for the hilltop Castello quarter and the city beach at Poetto, then drive to the long beaches at Chia and Villasimius. A day inland reaches Su Nuraxi at Barumini, the island's best-known Bronze Age nuraghe.

Public transport between the beaches is limited, so hire a car. The drive from Cagliari to Olbia in the north-east takes several hours, which is why a second week is needed to add the Costa Smeralda or the Gulf of Orosei, whose coves are best reached by boat from Cala Gonone. Some popular beaches now cap visitor numbers in summer and require a booking; check with the local municipality before setting out.

A week in the south of Sardinia

A practical week in the south starts at Cagliari's airport, which is close to the city. Book cars early, as the island's hire fleets are stretched in summer and automatics are scarce.

  • Days 1 and 2, Cagliari: collect a hire car on arrival, but leave it parked while you explore the Castello quarter, the Roman amphitheatre and the market on foot, and spend an evening at Poetto, the city's long beach.
  • Days 3 and 4, Chia: drive down the south-west coast, about an hour away, and swim at the dune-backed bays of Su Giudeu and Tuerredda.
  • Day 5, Barumini: the inland trip to Su Nuraxi, about an hour north of Cagliari, where visits are by guided tour only.
  • Days 6 and 7, Villasimius: about an hour east of the city along a winding coast road, for the clear water around Capo Carbonara and an easy run back to the airport.

Trincomalee and Sri Lanka's east coast

When the southwest monsoon soaks Sri Lanka's south and west, the east coast has its dry season. Trincomalee averages about 35°C in June with only a couple of rainy days, and the sea sits around 29°C.

The beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli, north of the town, have calm, clear water, and a short boat ride from Nilaveli reaches Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling over coral; go early, before the day boats. The Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock overlooks one of the world's great natural harbours.

A week lets you add the ancient cities. Poson Poya, which marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, falls on 18 June 2027 according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka holiday list, and its main pilgrimage centres on Mihintale and Anuradhapura, about two hours' drive west of Trincomalee, with crowds of white-clad pilgrims and free food stalls. Sigiriya is within day-trip range too. Arugam Bay, further down the east coast, is in its surf season over the same months.

A week on the east coast and in the ancient cities

Most visitors arrive at Colombo's airport, and the road to Trincomalee takes most of a day, around six hours; some travellers break the journey at Dambulla or Sigiriya instead.

  • Days 1 to 3: Uppuveli or Nilaveli, with an early boat to Pigeon Island on one morning and the Koneswaram temple at sunset on another.
  • Days 4 and 5: drive to Anuradhapura, about two hours, where the ancient city's great stupas need a full day, best by bicycle; Mihintale is a short drive east.
  • Day 6: continue to Sigiriya, where the rock fortress is best climbed as soon as it opens, before the heat.
  • Day 7: return to Colombo, or extend into the hill country, where Kandy is a few hours south.

If your dates include 18 June, plan to be at Mihintale or Anuradhapura that day and expect crowded roads and full guesthouses.

Zanzibar, as the long rains end

Zanzibar's long rains end in May, and June opens a dry season that runs until October. Zanzibar City averages about 29°C with five or so rainy days, the sea is around 27°C, and the trade winds keep the coast less sticky than in the hot months of January and February. Spend two nights in Stone Town for its alleys, carved doors and a spice-farm tour, then move to the coast.

On the east side, at Paje and Jambiani, the tide goes far out, which suits kitesurfing and reef walks but not swimming at all hours; Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have deeper water. Snorkelling at Mnemba atoll and the red colobus monkeys of Jozani forest each fill half a day. Zanzibar is mostly Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees in town. The island pairs well with a safari in mainland Tanzania, where the dry season also begins.

Vancouver, sea and mountains together

Vancouver averages about 20°C in June and grows drier as the month goes on. Three or four days cover the city: a bike ride around the roughly 10-kilometre Stanley Park seawall, Granville Island market, and the North Shore, where Lynn Canyon has a free suspension bridge and Capilano a larger paid one.

With a full week, drive the Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler, around two hours with stops at Shannon Falls, or take the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island. The city is also the natural start for the Rockies trip below, and more of Canada is a short flight away.

Two weeks or more

Iceland's Ring Road

June is when Iceland becomes easy to drive. Snow has cleared from the Ring Road, waterfalls are full of meltwater and seabirds, puffins among them, nest on the coastal cliffs. Reykjavik averages about 13°C by day and 7°C at night, with rain on about nine days, and the light barely fades at midnight. The full Ring Road is about 1,300 kilometres and needs ten days or more to drive without rushing.

The highland F-roads usually stay closed until late June or July, and need a four-wheel drive when open. Iceland is expensive and rural rooms are few, so it is the trip on this list that most needs early booking.

Eight days in the south and west

  • Day 1: from Keflavík airport to Reykjavik is about 50 kilometres, roughly 45 minutes; spend the evening at the old harbour and a town pool, and sleep near Hallgrímskirkja.
  • Day 2: drive the Golden Circle, a loop of about 300 kilometres through Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, and sleep near Selfoss or Hella; June's late light lets you see Gullfoss after the coaches have gone.
  • Days 3 and 4: follow the south coast past Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss to Vík, about 180 kilometres from Reykjavik, and spend the second day on a guided glacier walk on Sólheimajökull, booked in advance.
  • Day 5: drive about 190 kilometres east to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, and book a boat slot on the lagoon.
  • Day 6: the long one, around 370 kilometres back towards the capital, with a stop at Skaftafell for the walk to Svartifoss.
  • Days 7 and 8: the Snæfellsnes peninsula, about two hours north of Reykjavik, for Kirkjufell and the coastal walk between Arnarstapi and Hellnar, before returning to the airport.

Banff and the Canadian Rockies

In June the lakes of Banff thaw to their turquoise colour, the Icefields Parkway is open all the way to Jasper, and bears and elk are often seen along the roadsides. Afternoons reach about 18°C, but nights drop to around 4°C and showers fall on about half the days. Snow can linger on high trails early in the month.

Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Johnston Canyon and the Banff Gondola can fill five or six days, and adding Jasper and a few days in Vancouver turns it into a two-week trip. Private cars can no longer drive to Moraine Lake; reserve a seat on the Parks Canada shuttle or a licensed tour. A Parks Canada pass is required for all visitors who stop in the parks.

Most visitors fly into Calgary, about an hour and a half by road from Banff, and from Vancouver the drive is long enough to need two days, through the Okanagan or along the Trans-Canada Highway via Revelstoke and Glacier National Park.

Stay in Banff town for the first nights, where hotels, restaurants and the Roam public buses are concentrated, and move to Lake Louise or Jasper for the Icefields Parkway, a drive of around 230 kilometres best spread over a full day with stops at Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield. The Calgary Stampede follows from 9 to 18 July 2027 and raises hotel rates around Calgary, one more reason to go in June.

Where June rain and heat get in the way

June is monsoon month on India's west coast. The India Meteorological Department's normal onset date for Kerala is 1 June, and the rain moves north to Goa and Mumbai in the days that follow; Mumbai averages more than 500 mm of rain in June. Many Goa beach shacks close, and the sea becomes unsafe.

Kerala's backwaters and hills are green and quiet in the rain if you want a monsoon trip, but for a beach in South Asia, Trincomalee is the better bet. Further north, Delhi averages about 39°C before the monsoon arrives, which makes the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan tiring. The south coast of Sri Lanka, around Galle and Mirissa, has frequent rain and big waves, so use the east coast instead.

East Asia has its own wet season. Hong Kong averages about 490 mm of rain on 19 days in June, according to the Hong Kong Observatory's 1991 to 2020 normals, and tropical cyclones can affect it from May.

In the Tokyo region, Japan's rainy season normally runs from about early June to mid-July, bringing grey skies and humidity; Hokkaido in the north largely escapes it, and the hydrangea and moss gardens look their best in the damp. Iceland or Scotland make better dramatic-landscape trips this month.

Packing by climate

The northern trips need more than you might expect for June:

  • Reykjavik: a waterproof shell and warm layers for afternoons around 13°C, a hat and gloves for viewpoints and boat trips, swimwear for the pools and a sleep mask for nights that stay light.
  • Edinburgh: a light rain jacket for rain on about ten days in June, plus midge repellent for the west Highlands.
  • Copenhagen: a sweater for evenings by the water.

For Trincomalee's 35°C afternoons, Sardinia's dry heat and Zanzibar's sun, pack loose cotton, a wide-brimmed hat, high-factor reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest for snorkelling, with covered shoulders and knees for Stone Town and Sri Lankan temples. In the Rockies, nights around 4°C mean a warm jacket even in summer, and rain gear for the frequent showers; buy bear spray locally, as it cannot go on flights.

Visas and travel authorisations

Iceland, Denmark and Italy are in the Schengen area. The EU's Entry/Exit System now records non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photos at the border, and the status of the ETIAS authorisation for visa-exempt travellers should be checked on the EU's official travel site. The UK requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for visitors who do not need a visa, applied for on gov.uk.

Canada requires an eTA for visa-exempt travellers arriving by air, US citizens excepted; apply only on the official Government of Canada site, as look-alike sites charge extra.

Sri Lanka issues Electronic Travel Authorisations through its official portal. Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA has been free for nationals of 40 countries, but they still have to apply before arrival. Tanzania, including Zanzibar, has an official e-visa system, and many nationalities can also get a visa on arrival.

Zanzibar also requires foreign visitors to buy a state travel insurance policy from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, and since 1 October 2026 visitors entering mainland Tanzania need an equivalent policy from the National Insurance Corporation; one policy covers a trip that includes both. Your own travel insurance does not replace it. See the site's visa guides and the Sri Lanka visa page.

Booking lead times

The longer the trip, the earlier the booking. Iceland comes first: rural guesthouses along the south coast are few and four-wheel-drive fleets are limited, so book four to six months ahead. The Rockies are similar, since lodges inside the national parks fill months in advance, and Parks Canada releases Moraine Lake shuttle seats in spring.

Sardinia's car ferries from mainland Italy and its hire cars are booked heavily for the summer, so two to three months ahead is wise even for June. Copenhagen usually needs two to three months, more for the Distortion and Roskilde weeks. Edinburgh in June is easier than in August, at about two months. Zanzibar and Trincomalee are the most flexible, at six to eight weeks.

Health and safety by destination

In Iceland, the landscape is the risk. At Reynisfjara, sudden sneaker waves have swept visitors into the sea, so stay well back from the water's edge, never walk on a glacier without a guide, and check SafeTravel and the Icelandic Met Office before hikes and long drives.

In the Rockies, Parks Canada asks visitors to stay at least 100 metres from bears and 30 metres from elk and other large animals; carry bear spray and hike in groups. Malaria is present in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, so ask a travel clinic about tablets and use repellent in the evening. Sri Lanka has dengue, spread by mosquitoes that bite in daytime, so repellent matters during the day as well. In Sardinia and Trincomalee, the commonest problems are heat and sunburn.

Keeping costs down

Iceland's tap water is clean and free, so skip bottled water, and its discount supermarkets cut food costs sharply compared with eating out; the town swimming pools cost a fraction of the big lagoons. In Edinburgh, the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery are free. Copenhagen's harbour baths are free, and cycling is cheaper than public transport for short hops.

In Zanzibar, shared dala-dala minibuses link Stone Town with the beaches for much less than a taxi. In the Rockies, a Parks Canada Discovery Pass can cost less than daily passes if you will spend more than a week in the national parks.

When you have chosen the length and the place, the AI Trip Planner can turn it into a day-by-day route within your budget, and you can swap any stay or activity before booking.

How we checked this

Temperatures and rain days are long-term normals published by national weather services, in most cases for 1991 to 2020. Event and holiday dates come from the organisers, tourist boards or official holiday lists, and entry rules from the governments that issue them. We last checked every figure in November 2026, and our research method explains the process.
