What to expect

Asiana Airlines is a South Korean full-service airline based in Seoul, with its international hub at Incheon International Airport and domestic flights from Gimpo. Founded on 17 February 1988 and first flying in December 1988, it suits travellers between Korea and Asia, North America, Europe and Australia. Korean Air bought about 63.9 percent of Asiana on 12 December 2024, and the two airlines merge on 17 December 2026, when the Asiana brand is retired and its flights become Korean Air flights.

What the Korean Air merger means for your trip

Asiana leaves Star Alliance at 23:59 Korea Standard Time on 16 December 2026. From 17 December the combined airline operates within SkyTeam under the Korean Air name and livery. If you are booking travel that crosses that date, expect your flight to be operated by Korean Air, with SkyTeam partners in place of Star Alliance partners.

Tickets booked with Star Alliance miles, for example Air Canada Aeroplan awards on Asiana flights, are only valid for travel completed by 16 December 2026. Asiana's own notices on flyasiana.com give the rules for paid and award tickets, so check them before you change a booking.

78 destinations and the Incheon base

Asiana serves 78 destinations, with 90 international passenger routes, 14 domestic routes and 27 cargo routes. Incheon is the base for flights to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, North America, Europe and Australia, and Gimpo handles domestic flights. Jeju is a focus city with frequent flights from Seoul.

Low-cost subsidiaries Air Busan and Air Seoul fly short routes from Busan and Seoul. Along with Korean Air's Jin Air, they are being folded into one low-cost airline as part of the merger.

Asiana Club

Earn points on OZ flights with Asiana Club, which you can join on the Asiana website.

Asiana Club has five tiers (Silver, Gold, Diamond, Diamond Plus and Platinum). Members earn miles on Asiana and Star Alliance flights. Because Asiana is merging with Korean Air, check the airline’s website for changes to the programme.

Asiana Club had five tiers: Silver, Gold, Diamond, Diamond Plus and Platinum. Earning miles on paid Asiana flights ended on 15 October 2026, while award redemptions, upgrades and elite benefits run until 16 December 2026.

After the merger, miles earned by flying convert into Korean Air SKYPASS miles at 1:1, and miles earned through partners such as credit cards convert at 1:0.82. Korea's Fair Trade Commission approved this plan on 15 September 2026. Converted miles keep their original expiry rules and are honoured for ten years from the integration date. Diamond Plus and Platinum members move to a new SKYPASS tier, Morning Calm Select, with SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits.

Baggage allowance

On Asiana, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your OZ e-ticket.

Cabin bag only

Expect the allowance on Asiana to change with distance and cabin: higher cabins include more than basic economy on the same flight. Look up your route on the baggage page of flyasiana.com.

Baggage allowance depends on the route and cabin and is shown in your booking. For flights after 16 December 2026, Korean Air's rules apply, so check both airlines' baggage pages if your trip is close to the changeover. Online check-in runs on flyasiana.com and the Asiana app until the merger, and from Incheon both airlines' terminal assignments can change, so confirm your terminal before you travel.

Pro tip: if your OZ fare comes without a hold bag, buy one in your booking before you fly; airport prices for extra bags are usually higher.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Get to the airport with time for Asiana check-in, bag drop and security. The airline sets a deadline for each airport, shown in your booking, and late arrivals can lose their seat.

  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

Hand in checked luggage at the Asiana counter or bag drop, then keep your boarding pass and passport ready for security and the gate.
