Children's Day in Thailand (Wan Dek) guide

A morning when children run Government House.

In short

Families travelling in Thailand can join Wan Dek on Saturday 9 January 2027, the second Saturday of January. Children visit Government House, climb into air force aircraft and enter many museums and zoos free. Although it is not a public holiday, events spread across most towns, so check the Government House programme when published.

Wan Dek, Thailand's National Children's Day, is the one morning a year when the country's seats of power hand themselves over to its youngest citizens. Children sit at the Prime Minister's desk in Government House, climb into air force aircraft and stroll into museums and zoos without paying, while the adults mostly carry the snacks.

It is not a public holiday, yet it reaches into almost every Thai town. Ministries, military units, hospitals, banks and restaurant chains all run something for children, from craft workshops to free buffet plates, and the whole country takes on the feel of a giant school fair.

For visitors it is an unusually open window on Thai public life. Offices that are normally closed to outsiders fill with families, and soldiers, nurses and civil servants spend the day running games and stalls for an audience of five-year-olds.

Choosing between Government House, airbases and zoos

Children's Day happens everywhere at once, so the first decision is where to spend it. In Bangkok the headline venue is Government House, open to families for a single day. In 2026 it ran stage shows, workshops, games and free food stalls across the grounds. Come with a plan for what your child most wants to do there, because covering everything in one morning is unrealistic.

Families who would rather see aircraft than ministers watch the Royal Thai Air Force. Its 2026 programme included flying displays at bases around the country, featuring F-16, Gripen and AT-6 aircraft, with details posted on the air force's Facebook pages a few days ahead. Army and navy bases, Parliament House and Museum Siam also open their doors, and the Thai Red Cross holds its own fair at its nursing school on Henri Dunant Road, with first aid and CPR lessons.

Outside the capital, the free zoo weekend is the big draw. If you are touring the country in January, our Thailand page helps you fit the date into a wider route.

The Prime Minister's motto and the day's history

Thailand made Children's Day a fixture in 1955, and since 1956 every Prime Minister has issued a short motto for the nation's children. Read in sequence, they work like small political portraits. Recent ones have urged children towards democracy and diversity, or towards responsibility and discipline, and one asked them to adapt to the future. The King traditionally offers children words of advice, while the Supreme Patriarch adds a moral teaching. Behind it all sits an old Thai saying linking clever children to a prosperous nation.

Government House itself is part of the appeal. Its main building, the Thai-Khu-Fah, mixes neo-Venetian Gothic with Byzantine touches. The Italian architect Annibale Rigotti drew it, and construction started on 1 January 1925. The compound is normally reserved for state business. For one Saturday, children who would never pass the gate wander its corridors.

Food on the day is aimed squarely at small appetites. In 2026 the Government House booths handed out nuggets, waffles and ice cream to a steady queue. Beyond Bangkok, restaurant chains and convenience stores join in with free meals and snacks. Bangkok Bank has long handed stationery to every child who walks into a branch.

Getting there

To Government House

No Skytrain station is close, so a metered taxi is simplest with small children; ask for the meter.

By river

The Chao Phraya Express Boat to Thewet pier takes about 40 minutes from Sathorn pier, which links to the BTS at Saphan Taksin.

By bus

City bus 70 runs from Sanam Luang and Ratchadamnoen Klang; air-conditioned bus 515 comes from Victory Monument.

Free rides

In 2026 children rode the BTS and MRT free on the day.

Where to stay during the festival

The date is fixed and well known across Thailand, so book family rooms early, in Bangkok or near whichever provincial zoo you plan to visit.

In Bangkok, a hotel near a BTS line lets you combine the free Skytrain with the river boat to Dusit.
