New Year's Eve Countdown in Bangkok guide
Bangkok celebrates New Year's Eve every 31 December, with some venues running several evenings beforehand and line-ups announced in December. Free concerts outside big shopping centres, fireworks over the Chao Phraya and ticketed rooftop or river parties give plenty of choice. It suits travellers who want to pick their own scene; plan transport home.
Bangkok sees in the new year with free countdown concerts outside its biggest shopping centres, fireworks fired over the Chao Phraya at midnight and ticketed parties on rooftops, river boats and in a national stadium. The city has no single focal point, so each crowd builds its own celebration.
It is an unusually democratic party. The best-known stages cost nothing to reach, and the same fireworks can be watched from a riverside lawn, a dinner cruise or a hotel balcony. For many visitors the night is less about one venue than about choosing which version of Bangkok to spend it in: the mall crowds of Ratchaprasong, the river, or the bars of Sukhumvit.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
Late December evenings are milder than the rest of the year, but thousands of bodies pressed together make for a warm night. Bring water, and a hand towel or small battery fan helps more than you would expect. Eat properly before you take up a position; once you are in place near the front, getting out and back again is close to impossible. Comfortable flat shoes beat anything stylish when the walk home may be a long one.
Cruise, rooftop and hotel party prices for the night are far above normal, and many deals are non-refundable. Before you pay, check what is included: drinks, a set menu, a guaranteed view of the fireworks, and the time the boat or venue actually closes. For cruises, confirm the departure pier and how you will get home from it after midnight.
Streets around CentralWorld close to traffic from the afternoon.
The best standing room at the main sites is gone; later arrivals watch from the back.
Free and ticketed stages fill the hours before midnight.
Fireworks go up over the Chao Phraya as the year turns.
The slowest part of the night; plan your route before you set out.
The first decision shapes everything else. The big mall countdowns are free, open to anyone and very crowded. The paid options, which run from dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya to rooftop bars, hotel party packages and ticketed music festivals, give you space and a guaranteed view, but they sell out and many cannot be refunded. Pick your side by November and book then.
The line-ups for this year's countdowns had not been released when we checked. Venues usually reveal their artists and stage times in December. If you are building a longer stay around the holiday, our guide to Bangkok is the place to start. Leave the following morning free. You will need it.
Bangkok's New Year has no single square or monument. It is spread across the city's malls and riverbanks. CentralWorld, at the Ratchaprasong intersection in Pathum Wan, draws the largest crowd for its free stage concert and countdown. ICONSIAM, the riverside mall in Khlong San that opened in 2018, was home to the national Amazing Thailand Countdown in 2025, and its waterfront park of more than 10,000 square metres is the classic place to watch the fireworks over the water.
Events have also taken place at ChangChui, the creative park on the Thonburi side.
Which one suits you comes down to priorities. CentralWorld has the biggest crowd and the main stage. The riverside trades some of the music for a clear sight of the fireworks. Sukhumvit spreads the party along one long street.
International flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about 25 km out, and Don Mueang (DMK). Check entry rules on our Thailand visa page.
The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in 27 minutes and runs until midnight, with fares of 15 to 45 baht.
Change at Phaya Thai for the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Siam or Chit Lom, the two stations for CentralWorld. Expect to walk the last stretch.
Take the BTS Silom Line to Krung Thon Buri and change to the Gold Line, a 1.8 km shuttle with a flat 16 baht fare, for Charoen Nakhon, which opens straight into the mall. The mall's own ferry crosses from Sathorn Pier, beside BTS Saphan Taksin, and from Si Phraya Pier.
Staying around Ratchaprasong lets you walk to CentralWorld and back, which matters on a night when cars cannot get close. A room on the river, on either bank, gives you the fireworks from the window and a quiet escape from the crowd.
Room rates climb steeply for the night, so lock in a rate early and read the cancellation terms closely.
Bangkok
Late December is the coolest, driest part of Bangkok's year. The 1991 to 2020 normals for Bangkok Metropolis (NOAA and the Thai Meteorological Department) give a December high of 32.3°C and a low of 23.2°C, with 12 mm of rain on about one day.
A dry, warm night is the norm, but a packed crowd feels hotter than the thermometer says.

General
Outside CentralWorld at Ratchaprasong, where a free stage concert leads into midnight. It draws the largest crowd in the city.
They did in 2025, running until around 2:00. Late operation has to be confirmed each year, so check the operators' announcements before you plan your route home.
It has. In 2025 the national countdown there was spread over five evenings, ending on New Year's Eve, so earlier nights are a calmer way to see the stage.
Yes, if you book a paid package. Views vary a great deal by building and direction, so ask the bar exactly which way its terrace faces before you pay a non-refundable deposit.
Public express boats will have stopped long before midnight on a holiday. The mall's own ferries are the only boats worth relying on, and their queues are long after the countdown.
Yes, it is an official public holiday, and the countdown crowds include plenty of Thai families out for the night alongside visitors.
Prices & payment
The riverside park at ICONSIAM is the best-known free spot. Riverbank areas on either side of the Chao Phraya also offer views, but they fill up early in the evening.
Getting there
Not to the door. Streets around the mall are closed to traffic from the afternoon, so taxis and Grab cars drop passengers well away. Use the Skytrain instead.
Booking
November is about right. The better cruises and rooftop packages often sell out by December, and many cannot be cancelled, so be sure of your plans first.
Families & accessibility
The densest areas near the main stages are hard going for little ones. Families tend to do better watching from the edges or from a riverside hotel, and slipping away before the rush that follows midnight.
