Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix guide

Formula 1's original night race.

In short

The Singapore Grand Prix is usually held on a weekend in late September or early October on the streets of the colonial quarter. It was the first Formula 1 race run at night, and drivers rate it among the toughest, with heat, humidity and close walls. It suits motorsport fans; book rooms and tickets well ahead.

Singapore's Grand Prix turns the city's old colonial quarter into a racetrack after dark. It is a street race in the strictest sense, run on roads that carry buses and office traffic the rest of the year, and it was the first Formula 1 race ever held at night. Nowhere else on the calendar looks like it.

Drivers rate it among the toughest races of the season. The tropical air stays hot and heavy after dark, the walls sit close, and a long race leaves little room to recover from a mistake. For spectators it is a city break and a motor race at once: by day the museums and hawker centres, by night the track.

Choosing a ticket zone, grandstand and hotel

Start with the zone map, not the price list. Every ticket is tied to a zone, and the zone decides which grandstands, walkways and concert stages you can reach once you are through the gate. A cheap walkabout pass can leave you behind fences for the headline set you came for. Tickets are sold through the official Formula 1 ticketing site, and in 2026 the entry level began at about S$228, with grandstand seats and three-day passes costing more.

Grandstands with a view of the start or the water go first, often many months out. Buy as soon as you know your dates, and treat any early-bird offer as the best price you will see.

The Marina Bay street circuit and its history

Singapore has raced cars since 1966, when a Formula Libre event used Thomson Road, but the modern story begins in 2008. That year Formula 1 came to Marina Bay and ran the first night race in its history. Sebastian Vettel later made the place his own, with five wins here.

The lap reads like a walking tour of the colonial core. Leaving the pit lane by the Singapore Flyer on Republic Boulevard, the cars brake from about 308 km/h into Turn 1, Sheares, then hit the quickest stretch of the lap on Raffles Boulevard. Turn 7, Memorial, is one of the heaviest stops. The track then swings onto Nicoll Highway, past the Padang and City Hall along St Andrew's Road, over Anderson Bridge and into the tight Turn 13 hairpin in front of the Fullerton Hotel. Esplanade Drive and Merlion Park follow before the long run down Raffles Avenue.

Where the passing happens: four DRS zones: the start-finish straight, Raffles Boulevard, the Esplanade Bridge and the newer straight on Raffles Avenue. Seats facing any of the big braking points see the most action. About 1,600 purpose-built floodlights do the rest, angled so that neither drivers nor cameras are dazzled.

Getting there

From Changi

Changi Airport is about 24 km east. The airport shuttle train runs to Tanah Merah every 6 to 9 minutes; change to the East-West Line for City Hall. The last airport train leaves at 12:06am.

To the circuit

City Hall (North-South and East-West lines) brings you out by the Padang; Esplanade (Circle Line) surfaces at Raffles Boulevard; Promenade (Circle and Downtown lines) is the stop for the pit-building side. Check which gate your ticket names first.

Getting home

In 2026 the last trains left City Hall at 00:30 after Friday and Saturday and 00:45 on race night. Taxis picked up near the circuit added S$8 between 21:30 and midnight.

Where to stay during the festival

Rooms facing the bay climb steeply on race weekend. A cheaper plan is a hotel a few train stops away, with a short ride in.

Choose somewhere you can walk back to from a station after midnight.
