Singapore National Day Parade guide

Singapore's birthday, flypasts and all.

In short

The National Day Parade on 9 August, a Monday holiday in 2027, suits anyone keen to see a shared national ritual of marching contingents, aircraft, parachutists and fireworks. Preview shows usually run on weekends from about mid-June. Seats are hard to come by, so plan for the previews or a good vantage point outside, and check the official parade site once details are posted.

The National Day Parade is Singapore's birthday celebration, a single evening of marching contingents, aircraft, parachutists and fireworks. The first one was held in 1966, and it has run every year since, growing from a morning march into a full night-time production watched by much of the country.

It matters less as a spectacle than as a shared ritual. Families who never get a seat still gather around the television, and the songs, colours and flypasts belong to everyone, whether they are in the stands or on a sofa.

Entering the ticket ballot or booking a bay-view hotel

Seats at the National Day Parade are free, and that is the catch. Since 2003 they have been allocated through an electronic ballot, which opens a few months ahead and is meant for Singapore residents, who register online or by phone. A visitor's realistic plan is to watch from outside the stands, or to go along with resident friends who win tickets.

That shifts the planning to where you sleep. Hotels with views over Marina Bay are in heavy demand on National Day and on the rehearsal weekends that start in June, so book as soon as your dates are fixed and choose a refundable rate while the details for 2027 are still being released. Rooms around City Hall and the Esplanade put you within walking distance of the Padang, which is where the 2027 parade is due to be held.

Give yourself a few days either side. The holiday turns the city centre into a series of closed roads and packed platforms on the day, and the quieter days around it are better for everything else. Our Singapore travel guide covers the rest of the island.

The 2027 parade on the Padang

The 2027 parade is due to return to the Padang to mark 60 years of national service. The field below the old Supreme Court and City Hall was the parade's first home, and it has hosted every few years ever since, often in milestone years. The plan was for a permanent stage at NS Square on the site of the old Float @ Marina Bay, still being rebuilt.

Padang years usually bring the mobile column, a procession of military vehicles past the stands, alongside the marching contingents in uniform. Parachutists from the Red Lions, the armed forces' display team, have dropped in since 1989, and fighter jets have flown over nearly every parade since 1971.

For those with seats, the Fun Pack is part of the ritual. Handed out since 1991, it holds food, drinks, a torchlight and a flag, and the torchlight comes into play once the sun has gone down. Across the island, households in red and white follow along on television.

Getting there

Changi to City Hall

The MRT station is underground between Terminals 2 and 3 (the free Skytrain links Terminal 1). Ride to Tanah Merah and change to the East West Line, which runs straight to City Hall. Trains leave the airport from 05:31 (05:59 on Sundays); the last is at 00:06.

Near the Padang

City Hall station comes up by St Andrew's Cathedral and Raffles City, across the road from the Padang. Esplanade on the Circle Line links to it underground through CityLink Mall, a covered route if it rains.

After the fireworks

Roads close and both stations fill fast. If queues look long, walk a station or two away before boarding.
