Lollapalooza Chicago guide
Festival-goers who like a wide bill, from rock and punk to hip-hop and electronic, can plan on Lollapalooza at the turn of July and August, estimated as 29 July to 1 August 2027 until organisers announce dates on lollapalooza.com. Around 400,000 people attend over four days on Chicago's lakefront, so plan transport and pace yourself.
Lollapalooza is Chicago's big summer music weekend, a four-day festival that takes over Grant Park on the edge of Lake Michigan. Alternative rock, punk, metal, hip-hop and electronic acts share the bill, and the scale is huge: an estimated 400,000 people pass through the gates over a single edition.
Music is the draw, but Lolla has always mixed in other things: visual art, information tables for nonprofit and political groups, and a strong pull on local food businesses. The bill swings from guitar bands to rappers and DJs in a single afternoon, so most people leave having seen at least one act they had never heard of.
For the city it is the anchor of the summer calendar. Hotels fill, the L runs packed trains to the lakefront, and families get their own corner too. Kidzapalooza, a children's area with music and activities, has run alongside the main festival since its first Chicago year.

Hotels near the venue fill up around the event dates.
Every visitor goes through an airport-style search, which can include a pat-down and a magnetometer. Ask security before the search starts if you want a same-gender screener. Bags are checked again each time you come back in.
Pack light and you clear the line faster.
The banned list is long and strictly enforced. Leave behind aerosols (including spray sunscreen), blankets and towels, chairs, umbrellas, totems and flag poles, selfie sticks, drones, outside food and drink, and any professional camera gear. Video recording is not allowed. Pets stay home, although service animals are admitted.
What you can bring: an empty reusable bottle, a portable battery pack, non-aerosol sunscreen of 3.4 oz or less, a point-and-shoot camera without a detachable lens, and a misting fan whose bottle is carried in empty. Anything taken at the gate is not kept for you, and smoking or vaping is banned in all Chicago parks.
Medication goes in its pharmacy-labelled container, showing the prescription, dosage and patient name, and that name must match your ID. Carry only the amount you need for that day and show it to the medical staff stationed at each entrance. Over-the-counter medicines are allowed in a day's supply and are checked too. Inhaled or smoked medicines are refused unless it is a prescribed inhaler.
Write your allergies and medications on a card in your pocket, and add an emergency contact to your phone's lock screen when you register your wristband.
Free filtered water is available at hydration stations around the grounds, so the empty bottle is the most useful thing you carry. Cooling buses park near the medical tents on Balbo and Jackson, and there are six medical tents in total.
If lightning forces an evacuation, follow staff to the underground car parks: Grant Park North Garage at 25 N. Michigan Ave, Grant Park South Garage at 325 S. Michigan Ave, or Millennium Lakeside Garage on Columbus Drive. Turn on push alerts in the Lolla app before you arrive. In an emergency call 9-1-1 and read out the letter and number on the nearest pole marker.
Children are only screened at the gate with a parent or guardian's consent. Register them with Tag-Your-Kid at Guest Services or at the tent beside Kidzapalooza so staff can reunite you quickly if you get separated. Guest Services, at Ida B Wells and Columbus, also handles lost property and hands out earplugs, which young ears need near the big stages. Strollers are allowed.
Entry began at 11am on all four days in 2025. The first sets belong to newer bands and DJs, and it is the calmest time to learn the layout and find water and medical tents.
Crowds build as better-known acts take the stages, and moving between the far ends of Grant Park takes real time.
The fields in front of the main stages pack out, and headline sets play after dark with the city skyline behind the crowd.
The nearest stations are slammed for the first half hour. Walk a few blocks west or north before looking for a train or ride.
Most people commit to Lolla long before the full schedule exists. The organisers announce dates and the lineup through their mailing list, so sign up early and decide on single days or the full four once the headliners are out. Set times arrive later in the official app, which is where you plan the clash between two stages that will inevitably ruin one evening.
Grant Park is enormous. It runs 319 acres from Randolph Street down to Roosevelt Road, with Michigan Avenue as its western edge and the lake on the other side, and the festival uses a long stretch of it.
Treat each day as a long shift outdoors. Pick the two or three acts you most want to see and leave the gaps loose, because getting between the far ends of the site takes real time. Our Chicago city guide helps if you want to add a morning at the museums or an architecture tour on the days you skip.
Perry Farrell, singer of Jane's Addiction, launched Lollapalooza as a travelling show. The first tour opened in Phoenix on 18 July 1991, and the package of alternative bands kept moving around the country until 1997, with a brief return in 2003. A 2004 tour was cancelled over weak sales, and the name looked finished.
Chicago gave it a second life. In 2005 it became a fixed festival in Grant Park, then only two days long, with 70 acts on five stages and more than 65,000 people. The city liked the result enough to sign long contracts: a five-year, $5 million deal with the Chicago Park District in 2006, and later an extension through 2018 that guaranteed the city $13 million. Two days became four, and the stages spread south across the park.
Eating is part of the local flavour. Chow Town, the food area, listed 91 vendors in 2026, and plenty carry Chicago names: Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Connie's Pizza, Billy Goat Tavern, The Berghoff Restaurant and Chicago's Doghouse. There is a vegetarian zone called Plant Base, Dessert Island for sweets, and a slushy bar beside Buckingham Fountain for the hottest afternoons.
From O'Hare the CTA Blue Line runs to the Loop around the clock, at least every 15 minutes, in about an hour; a trip starting at the airport costs $5. From Midway the Orange Line reaches the Loop in about 25 minutes. Amtrak trains terminate at Union Station.
Any train on the Loop tracks leaves you a short walk from Grant Park; Monroe, Adams/Wabash, Washington/Wabash and Harrison are the handiest stations. Metra stops at Millennium Station and Van Buren Street on the park's edge and has added trains on festival weekends.
Recent editions put the main gate where Ida B. Wells Drive meets Michigan Avenue, with a second gate at Monroe Street and Columbus Drive. Columbus Drive is closed between Monroe and Roosevelt while the stages are up, so taxis and rideshares drop off on surrounding streets.
A hotel in the Loop or along Michigan Avenue lets you walk to the gates, go back for a shower between sets and avoid the crush on the trains at closing time. Rooms near the park go first, so book as soon as the dates are public.
Chicago
Late July and early August are the warmest weeks of the Chicago summer. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Midway give a July average high of 85.2°F (29.6°C) and a low of 68.1°F (20.1°C), with about 4 inches (102 mm) of rain in the month, much of it in short, heavy thunderstorms.
Heat is the more common problem on the field, so pace yourself on the first day.

General
Wikipedia puts attendance at about 400,000 across the whole festival, with a capacity of 115,000 at any one time. Expect very full trains and long queues at peak hours.
No. Chicago bans smoking and vaping in its parks, and that covers the festival grounds in Grant Park. Inhaled medicines are only accepted in the form of a prescribed inhaler.
Yes, with planning. Kidzapalooza gives younger fans their own area, strollers are allowed, and staff will tag children at Guest Services so lost kids can be matched with parents. Bring ear protection, since the main stages are loud.
Yes. Earplugs are available from Guest Services, whose main tent stands at Ida B Wells and Columbus. Pick up a pair early on day one, well before the headline sets.
Yes, as long as the naloxone kit is factory-sealed. A harm-reduction tent called This Must Be The Place, off Columbus Drive, also hands out free Narcan and fentanyl information during the festival.
Phone photos and a basic point-and-shoot camera are fine. Detachable lenses, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and professional audio or video gear are banned, and the festival does not allow video recording with dedicated equipment.
Lost and found is run by Guest Services, whose main tent sits at Ida B Wells and Columbus. You can also pre-register your phone with the festival's online lost and found before the weekend.
It is. Sister festivals run in South America, Europe and India under the same name, each with separate dates and bills, so check you are buying for Grant Park when you shop for passes.
Stay & facilities
Outside food and drinks are not allowed. An empty reusable plastic or aluminium bottle is fine. Fill it for free at the hydration stations inside. Factory-sealed single-serve electrolyte sachets are also permitted.
Yes. Chow Town has a zone called Plant Base, and many of the other stands offer meat-free options. Dessert Island covers the sweet side.
Timing & weather
Staff may clear the park and send people to the underground garages along Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive. An evacuation does not always end the day, and revised set times are posted in the app once the grounds reopen.
