In short

Thai AirAsia flies nonstop from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY), the main airport for Songkhla province and Thailand's deep south. The 488 km flight lasts about 1 hour 5 minutes. Hat Yai is southern Thailand's shopping and food city, and the flight is the quickest way in from the Malaysian capital.

Thai AirAsia, and adding a bag for shopping

Thai AirAsia is the only airline on the route. As a low-cost carrier it includes a cabin bag in the base fare and charges for checked luggage, meals and seat selection. Shopping trips to Hat Yai often come home heavier, so consider adding a bag for the return leg at the time of booking.

KLIA Terminal 2 and exit immigration

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is in Sepang, about 45 km south of the city. Thai AirAsia, like the rest of the AirAsia group, uses Terminal 2. The KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral takes about half an hour and serves both terminals. Allow time for exit immigration, as queues at Kuala Lumpur can be long at busy times.

One terminal 12 km from Hat Yai city

Hat Yai International Airport lies about 12 km south-west of the city centre, and one passenger terminal handles both domestic and international flights. Airports of Thailand lists several ways into town. A minibus line runs daily from 06:00 to 23:30 for a flat 60 baht, calling at Kaset Market, Kim Yong Market, Hat Yai College, Prince of Songkla University, Central Festival and the bus terminal. The arrival van costs 100 baht and stops at Sanamanusorn, Central Festival, Lee Garden Hat Yai and Kim Yong Market; follow the "Arrival Van" sign. Taxis and shared minivans take 20 to 30 minutes to the centre, and minivans also continue to Songkhla. Car hire desks are on the first floor.

Malaysians get 30 days and no land-entry cap

Malaysian citizens can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa. Under rules in force from 15 September 2026, Thailand grants this exemption to 60 countries and territories, replacing the 60-day exemption. Malaysians are also exempt from the twice-a-year limit on land-border entries that applies to most other nationalities. Holders of other passports should check our Thailand visa page.

Every foreign visitor completes the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival, by air, land or sea. It opens three days before travel at tdac.immigration.go.th.

Hat Yai to Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka
