Middelburg travel guide
Lange Jan, an abbey square and bikes to the Zeeland coast
Middelburg is Zeeland's capital, a carefully rebuilt Golden Age town with a medieval abbey, the Lange Jan tower and canals in a star-shaped ring. Come from May to September to pair it with the beaches. Allow a day for the town and another for Veere and the coast. Costs are very high, and many nationalities get 90 visa-free days.
Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland, on the former island of Walcheren in the far south-west, with North Sea beaches within cycling range. People come for its abbey and its star-shaped ring of canals, and use it as a base for Veere, Domburg and the Delta Works.
Spectacle makers here are credited with the first microscopes and telescopes around 1600, when the town grew rich on trade. German bombardment in May 1940 burned much of the centre, the abbey and town hall among it. Both were rebuilt with care, and more than 1,100 national monuments now stand in town.
The abbey, founded by Norbertine monks in the 12th century, is a walled precinct with three churches and a quiet square at its centre. Climb Lange Jan, its tallest tower, for a view over all of Walcheren, then go into the Zeeuws Museum (closed on Mondays) for tapestries and local costume.
Across the Markt, the Gothic town hall now serves the university college. Bars and restaurants cluster on the Markt and the Vlasmarkt, with more on the Dam. On a terrace by the Koorkerk you can sit with a beer facing the tower.
Zeeland food means shellfish from the Oosterschelde, mussels above all. Bakers sell the Zeeuwse bolus, a sticky spiral bun made with brown sugar and cinnamon. For a ride, Veere is about 5 km away, a tiny harbour town with an oversized church.

Getting there
Intercity to the end of the Zeeland line
Middelburg is near the western end of the railway across Zeeland from Roosendaal to Vlissingen, with intercity trains from Rotterdam and The Hague. The station is just south of the old centre, across the canal. The closest airport is Rotterdam The Hague; Brussels is about an hour and a quarter by car and Schiphol about two hours.
- By train
- Intercity via Roosendaal and Goes, ending at Vlissingen
- Rotterdam The Hague (RTM)
- Bus 33 to Rotterdam Centraal, then the train south

- Cyclists coming up from Belgium can cross the Westerschelde on the Breskens ferry, the most scenic way into Walcheren.
Where to stay
The abbey quarter, the Dam or Vlissingen
Middelburg's hotels are mid-range, and there is no hostel; the nearest is in Vlissingen, a few kilometres away. Stay in the abbey quarter or around the Dam to walk everywhere, and book early for July and August, when the whole Zeeland coast fills.
- Old centre
- Near the abbey and the Markt, quiet midweek, livelier on weekend nights
- The Dam
- Hotels and restaurants by the inner harbour, including Hotel Aan de Dam
- Vlissingen
- Hostel and seafront hotels, a few minutes away by train
- Walcheren campsites
- The budget option, best with a bike
Getting around
Walking, bikes and edge-of-town parking
Walk inside Middelburg's canal ring, where the abbey, the Markt, the Vlasmarkt and the Dam are within ten minutes of each other. A bike opens up the rest of Walcheren, including the classic 5 km ride to Veere. Drivers should use the signposted garages outside the ring, and trains cover the hop to Vlissingen.
- Cycling
- Veere about 5 km, plus the marked Middelburg cycle route around Walcheren
- Parking
- Paid; signposted garages on the edge of the centre
- Train
- Vlissingen and its boulevard a few minutes away
- The Zeeuws Museum closes on Mondays, which makes Monday the natural day for the bike ride to Veere and the coast.

Lange Jan, the Zeeuws Museum and the Veere harbour in two days
Two days suit Middelburg. Climb Lange Jan, the abbey tower, early on day one for the view over the polders and sea dykes of Walcheren, then give the Zeeuws Museum a couple of hours and walk the canals that trace the old star-shaped fortifications. On day two, cycle 5 km north-east to the harbour at Veere.
Then give the Zeeuws Museum a couple of hours; its tapestries and Zeeland costumes, with their lace caps and red coral necklaces, explain the province better than any brochure. Have lunch on the Markt beneath the Gothic front of the old town hall, now used by the university college.
In the afternoon, walk the canals that still trace the star shape of the 1595 Sea Beggars fortifications, and finish with dinner on the Vlasmarkt or the Dam. On day two, rent a bike and ride the 5 km to Veere, a former harbour town with a church far too big for it, then push on to the beach at Domburg. If engineering interests you more than sand, follow the N57 north over the Delta Works dams instead.
Oosterschelde mussels by the pan, samphire and a Zeeuwse bolus
Shellfish is the reason to eat in Middelburg. Oosterschelde mussels come by the pan, steamed with celery and onion and served with fries, from around July through the winter, and oysters are farmed nearby. The Markt, the Vlasmarkt and the Dam hold most restaurants, and a Zeeuwse bolus, a sticky spiced bun, is the local pastry.
Oysters are farmed in the same water near Yerseke, the shellfish village on the Oosterschelde. In summer, look for samphire (zeekraal) and sea aster (lamsoor), salty greens gathered from the tidal marshes. For something sweet, a baker's Zeeuwse bolus is a spiral bun glazed with brown sugar and cinnamon, best eaten warm with butter.
De Gouden Bock on the Damplein is a Mediterranean-leaning kitchen built around fish. De Gespleten Arent on the Vlasmarkt does careful modern cooking at lunchtime. Desafinado, a jazz cafe on Koorkerkstraat, has a terrace that looks straight up at Lange Jan and makes an easy lunch stop. Book ahead on summer weekends, when holidaymakers from the coast come into town to eat.
Cycling Walcheren to Veere, Domburg and the Delta Works
Walcheren is small and flat, so most day trips from Middelburg start on a bike. Veere, 5 km north-east, has a yacht harbour on the Veerse Meer and an enormous Grote Kerk, Domburg sits on the North Sea beach, and the N57 runs north across four Delta Works dams.
Domburg, on the north-west coast, is the classic beach resort of the island, with wide sand below the dunes and a long cycle path to get there. Vlissingen is closer still: walk its seafront boulevard to watch ocean ships sail up the Westerschelde towards Antwerp, then take the foot ferry across to Breskens to see the other bank.
The road crosses four dams, and the Oosterscheldekering, the great storm-surge barrier with its row of huge sliding gates, is the one to stop for. Without a car it makes a long but level day on the bike, best saved for a calm one.
