Zoetermeer travel guide
Indoor skiing, RandstadRail and Sweet Lake City
A new town on the edge of The Hague that grew from a village after the 1960s, best visited for SnowWorld's indoor slopes. Skiing works in any month; May to September suits the parks. Half a day is plenty, ideally from a base in The Hague, Delft or Leiden. Costs are very high.
Zoetermeer had about 6,400 people in 1950; it now has over 125,000, having grown as a new town on the eastern edge of greater The Hague. The name means freshwater lake, after a lake drained in 1614, which is why locals call it Sweet Lake City. Expect modern districts and good transport rather than old streets.
SnowWorld is the reason most visitors come: a big indoor ski and snowboard centre on Buytenparklaan with slopes open all year, and a restaurant that looks straight onto the piste. Climbing, rafting and a Kinepolis cinema fill out the leisure options for a rainy afternoon.
What history there is lies along the Dorpsstraat, the old village street, with a church of 16th-century origin and the small Stadsmuseum. Windmill De Hoop, in its present form since 1896, can be visited when its blue flag is flying. The bars are around the Stadhuisplein.

Getting there
Sprinter or RandstadRail
Two rail systems reach Zoetermeer. NS Sprinters from The Hague towards Gouda and Utrecht stop at Zoetermeer and Zoetermeer Oost, while Intercitys pass through. RandstadRail light rail runs all the way from Den Haag Centraal and loops through the city, often the simpler choice from central The Hague. Drivers use the A12.
- Den Haag Centraal
- RandstadRail lines 3 and 4 run through to Zoetermeer
- Sprinter
- From The Hague towards Gouda and Utrecht; Intercity trains do not stop
- Schiphol (AMS)
- Intercity to Den Haag Centraal, then RandstadRail
- Car
- A12, exits Zoetermeer-Centrum and Zoetermeer-Oost
- Avoid alighting at Zoetermeer Oost; onward connections from there are poor.
- Buying a single ticket from a bus driver costs far more than tapping in with a bank card or OV-chipkaart.
Getting around
RandstadRail and buses
Zoetermeer was planned around public transport. RandstadRail loops through the residential districts with stops near most homes, the Stadhuisplein and the Dorpsstraat, and every bus line starts at Centrum West beside the town hall. The city is flat with separate cycle paths, so a bike suits parks such as the Westerpark.
- RandstadRail
- Loop through the city; transfer from Sprinter trains at Zoetermeer station via the footbridge
- Centrum West
- Starting point for every local bus line
- Bike
- Flat, with separate cycle paths through the newer districts
- Westerpark
- Parkland on the western edge, past the farm restaurant on the Voorweg
- On RandstadRail, hold your card to the reader on the platform or in the vehicle at both ends of the ride; forgetting to check out is costly.

SnowWorld's indoor slopes, then the old Dorpsstraat
Zoetermeer is a half-day trip from The Hague on RandstadRail from Den Haag Centraal to Centrum West, where every local bus starts. Book a couple of hours on the indoor slopes at SnowWorld on Buytenparklaan, then walk the Dorpsstraat, the street of the old village, and have a drink on the Stadhuisplein.
Mornings tend to be quieter than weekend afternoons, and the restaurant upstairs looks straight onto the piste if part of your group is not skiing.
Afternoon. Swap boots for a walk along the Dorpsstraat, the street that was the whole village until the new town arrived. The old church at the junction with the Delftsewallen and Leidsewallen dates back in part to the 16th century and keeps a 1664 pulpit by a Leiden craftsman inside, and the Stadsmuseum nearby tells the story of the village becoming a city of 125,000. If the blue pennant is flying, windmill De Hoop on Eerste Stationsstraat is open to visitors.
Evening. Have a drink on the Stadhuisplein, then either eat at Hoeve Kromwijk on the Voorweg or ride back to The Hague for dinner.
Rijsttafel, Hoeve Kromwijk and the Stadhuisplein pubs
Zoetermeer grew as a commuter town, and its restaurants never caught up with its population; most serve Chinese or Indonesian food, so try a rijsttafel. For more character, Hoeve Kromwijk is a farm restaurant on the Voorweg, and evenings centre on the cafés of the Dorpsstraat and the Stadhuisplein pubs.
For something with more character, Hoeve Kromwijk is a farm restaurant on the Voorweg, out where the town gives way to the Westerpark, where a three-course dinner is the usual order. Book ahead at weekends, since there are few alternatives nearby. SnowWorld's own restaurant is handy between sessions on the slopes.
Evenings centre on two small areas. The cafés along the Dorpsstraat in the old village are mainly daytime places for coffee and lunch. After dark, the pubs around the Stadhuisplein take over: places such as The Old Pal and Queen of Hearts stay open late, longest on Friday and Saturday nights. Anyone wanting a bigger night out usually heads back to The Hague.

General
For skiers and families, yes. If you want canals and old museums instead, Delft and Leiden are a short ride away and serve you far better.
Zoetermeer. From there a footbridge leads to RandstadRail, which takes you to Centrum West; Zoetermeer Oost has poor onward connections.
Zoetermeer means freshwater lake in Dutch, after the lake north of the town that was drained in 1614. A literal translation gives sweet lake, hence the nickname.
Only a small one. The Dorpsstraat keeps the old village church, with origins in the 16th century, and the Stadsmuseum; most of the city was built after the late 1960s.
Yes, when its blue pennant is up or the sails are turning. The mill on Eerste Stationsstraat has had its present form since 1896.
That is about right: two hours on the slopes plus an hour among the village church, the Stadsmuseum and windmill De Hoop. Sleep in The Hague, Delft or Leiden.

Booking
Yes, it is the most characterful table in a town where Chinese and Indonesian places dominate. Reserve at weekends, as there is little else nearby.
Stay & facilities
Mostly around the business district, aimed at business travellers. The NH Hotel stands right next to Zoetermeer station on the Rokkeveen side.
Visa & documents
Schengen rules govern entry to the Netherlands. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Crime in the Netherlands is low. Bike theft and pickpocketing in busy areas are the main issues; watch out for cyclists.
