Zwolle travel guide
The Sassenpoort, the Peperbus and a canal-ringed Hanseatic core
Overijssel's capital, a former Hanseatic town with a canal-ringed centre ten minutes' walk from one of the country's busiest rail hubs. April to October suits walking and cycling along the IJssel; 5 May brings a huge Liberation Festival. One day for the town, two with Kampen or Deventer. Prices are very high, and many nationalities get 90 visa-free days.
Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel, on the east bank of the IJssel, and a former Hanseatic trading town whose old centre still sits inside a star-shaped ring of canals. It is also the main rail gateway to the north: trains fan out in eight directions. Connections are timed around a quarter past and a quarter to the hour.
Walk in from the station (about 10 minutes) by way of the Sassenpoort, the late 14th-century stone gate that is now open to visitors. The Peperbus, the 75-metre tower of the Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek on the Ossenmarkt, takes its nickname from its pepper-pot shape. Remains of the old wall are clearest at the end of Diezerstraat.
Food is a good reason to stay for dinner. Kota Radja on the Melkmarkt serves small Asian dishes in rounds and is nearly always full, so reserve; Os en Peper on the Ossenmarkt does a short French-leaning menu. On 5 May the Liberation Festival in Park de Wezenlanden draws over 100,000 people.

Getting there
A major rail junction
Zwolle is a major rail junction sending trains eight ways, timed to meet twice an hour for quick changes. Intercitys from Schiphol run via Lelystad on the Hanze line, others come from The Hague through Utrecht and Amersfoort, and the station is about 10 minutes on foot south of the old town. Drivers use the A28.
- Schiphol (AMS)

- Direct Intercity north
- A28 by car

- Apeldoorn about 30 minutes, Arnhem 45
- Avoid the A28 around Zwolle at rush hour; the extra lanes have not ended the queues.
- Missed a connection? Another wave of trains arrives about 30 minutes later.
Where to stay
Stationsweg or the Rode Torenplein
Zwolle is compact, so choose between sleeping by the station on Stationsweg, handy for rail day trips, and inside the canal ring near the Rode Torenplein, with restaurants on your doorstep. Rooms are scarcest around 5 May, when the Liberation Festival fills the town.
- By the station
- Bilderberg Grand Hotel Wientjes on Stationsweg, one of the better options, a short walk from the centre and the pick for rail day trips
- Old town
- Hanze Hotel on the Rode Torenplein, simple rooms in a historic building; lively streets mean some noise at night
Getting around
On foot, bikes for the IJssel
Walk Zwolle's partly car-free old town, where the Sassenpoort, Grote Markt, Ossenmarkt and Museum de Fundatie are minutes apart. At the station, city buses leave mostly from the west side and regional lines from the east. Cycle for the IJssel floodplain, Kampen or Hattem on separated paths.
- Walking
- Station to the old centre in about 10 minutes
- City buses
- Mostly from the west side of the station
- Regional buses
- Mostly from the east side of the station
- Bike

Weather in Zwolle, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Zwolle are being researched.
From the Sassenpoort to De Fundatie inside Zwolle's star-shaped canals
Walk ten minutes north from Zwolle station to the Sassenpoort, the stone gate begun in the late 14th century and one of few Dutch city gates you can still enter. Carry on into the canal-ringed centre for the Grote Markt and the Peperbus tower, give Museum de Fundatie two hours in the afternoon, and book dinner.
On the way, detour to the end of Diezerstraat, the best spot to see what survives of the medieval wall.
The collection is strong, but part of the fun is the egg-shaped gallery perched on the roof of the old courthouse building. Afterwards, walk out along the canals that trace the star-shaped line of the former bastions, or hire a bike for a loop on the dikes of the IJssel.
Evening. Book dinner: Kota Radja for rounds of small Asian dishes, or Os en Peper for a short French menu. With a second day, take a short train to Kampen or Deventer, both old IJssel trading towns.
Blauwvingers, small plates and late clubs in Zwolle
Take home Zwolle's two sweet specialities: blauwvingers, almond biscuits with a chocolate-dipped end named after the townspeople's old nickname, and Zwolse balletjes, striped boiled sweets sold in tins. Restaurants such as Kota Radja, with rounds of small Asian dishes, lie inside the canal ring, and terraces fill the Grote Markt in good weather.
Both turn up in bakeries and souvenir shops in the old centre.
For dinner, the restaurant streets lie within the canal ring. Kota Radja on the Melkmarkt is the town's runaway favourite: you order small Asian plates, sushi among them, in five rounds, and the place is packed most nights, so reserve and still expect a wait at weekends. Os en Peper on the Ossenmarkt keeps a short French-style menu in a cosy room, while Vidiveni Bistronomie on the Jufferenwal opens from breakfast through to dinner, handy when other kitchens are closed. Note that several of these close on Mondays.
When the weather allows, café terraces fill the Grote Markt and the squares around it. On Thursday to Saturday nights a few dance clubs open, and the ones on the Grote Markt only get going around midnight.

Visa & documents
Schengen rules govern entry to the Netherlands. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
