Belgium's biggest New Year's Eve event happens beneath the steel spheres of the Atomium. The City of Brussels stages its official fireworks there, on Place de l'Atomium in the north of the capital, and around 60,000 people gathered for the show that welcomed 2026. Free public transport after midnight, Christmas markets still running and a country of short train rides make Belgium one of Europe's easier places to spend the night, whether you want a crowd, a canal-side dinner in Bruges or a club in Antwerp.
Below: how the Brussels fireworks work, how to get there and back, what the smaller cities offer, which Belgian customs you will notice, and the safety issues that have marked recent New Year nights in parts of the capital.
New Year 2027 in Belgium at a glance
The main event is the City of Brussels fireworks at the Atomium (Place de l'Atomium). At the last edition the site opened at 21:00, with fireworks at midnight. Take the metro to Heysel or Houba-Brugmann; the STIB network was free after midnight at recent editions. Expect cold, often wet weather with nights near freezing. Belgium uses the euro (EUR) and cards are widely accepted. Schengen rules apply, with requirements depending on your passport, and 1 January is a public holiday across the country.
The Brussels fireworks at the Atomium
The answer to "where are the New Year fireworks in Brussels" has changed over the years. The show moved to the city centre for a period, including the edition at the Royal Palace on Place des Palais that drew about 55,000 people in the rain, and then returned to the Atomium. For the countdown to 2026, the site opened at 21:00 and the show combined fireworks fired from the ground and raised platforms with lasers and flame effects.
The Atomium setting works well for a big show: the open space of the Heysel plateau holds a large crowd, and the nine silver spheres reflect the light. DJs play on site before midnight. The City of Brussels announces the location in December, so check the city's New Year page before you plan the evening around it.
For the countdown to 2026 the show was staged on Boulevard du Centenaire on the Heysel plateau, with road and tram changes in the area from 19:00. Come by metro and leave the car, and expect the last metro on line 6 to leave Roi Baudouin at around 02:00, as it did that year.
Best places to celebrate New Year's Eve in Belgium
Brussels has Belgium's biggest New Year's Eve event, the City of Brussels fireworks at the Atomium, which drew around 60,000 people for 2026, plus the Winter Wonders atmosphere in the centre. Bruges offers a quiet medieval night with canal-side dinners, while Antwerp has the strongest club scene and Ghent the student energy of a university city.
Brussels: Atomium fireworks and Winter Wonders
Many visitors spend the early evening around the Grand-Place and the Winter Wonders (Plaisirs d'Hiver) Christmas market in the centre, eat dinner, then take the metro north to the Atomium about an hour before midnight. Line 6 runs to Heysel and Houba-Brugmann, the two stations closest to the site; STIB has recommended Houba-Brugmann for travellers with reduced mobility. Arriving between 22:30 and 23:00 still gets a good view of the free fireworks.
After the fireworks, STIB has made its whole network free from midnight at recent editions, with sources quoting free service until about 05:30, plus night buses. The crowd leaves at once, so the platforms at Heysel are packed for the first 30 to 45 minutes. Walking to Houba-Brugmann or waiting with a drink nearby makes the trip back easier. A hotel in central Brussels near a line 6 or line 1/5 metro station suits anyone who wants a large, organised public celebration.
Bruges: a quiet medieval night
Couples after a calm evening do well in Bruges. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is compact and lit for the season, and many restaurants serve a set New Year dinner. The town is small and mostly residential at night, so the celebration is low-key: a toast at midnight, with light to moderate crowds and no real street party.
Bruges is about an hour from Brussels by train, which makes it easy to do the dinner here and see Brussels on another day. Book restaurants weeks ahead, since the centre has limited seats and tourist demand peaks between Christmas and New Year.
Antwerp and Ghent: nightlife and student energy
Belgium's strongest club scene is in Antwerp, where bars and venues run ticketed countdown parties. Ghent, a university city with a lively centre, offers a mix of bars and a beautifully lit medieval waterfront. Both are under an hour from Brussels by train and hold local celebrations, but the programmes change from year to year, so check the city websites in December.
Belgian trains run late on New Year's Eve but not all night on every route. Night owls and groups planning to club or bar-hop in Antwerp or Ghent should stay in that city and travel back the next day.
Belgian New Year traditions worth knowing
Belgian families mark the night with a long dinner, known as the réveillon in French-speaking areas, and a toast at midnight with kisses and wishes. In Brussels' many communes, municipal rules generally restrict private fireworks, with some exceptions made for New Year's Eve, so check local rules before you buy any.
The most charming custom happens on 1 January. Children write a New Year letter, the nieuwjaarsbrief in Dutch, on decorated paper to their parents or godparents, promising good behaviour for the year ahead. They read it aloud on New Year's Day, sometimes standing on a chair, and receive a small gift or some money. The tradition is centuries old in Flanders, and you may see the decorated papers in stationery shops in December.
On the coast, the Nieuwjaarsduik (New Year's dive) in Ostend is the largest of the Belgian sea dives, held on the first weekend of the year, which is not always 1 January. Thousands of people run into a North Sea of around 7°C, most wearing hats and shoes, which the organisers recommend.
Which Belgian city fits your New Year's Eve?
Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent compared
| City | Style of night | Main draw | Getting home | Book ahead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brussels | Big public party | Atomium fireworks | Free STIB after midnight (recent editions) | Hotels and dinner |
| Bruges | Quiet and romantic | Historic centre, set dinners | Walkable centre | Restaurants, weeks ahead |
| Antwerp | Club-focused | Ticketed parties | Stay locally | Party tickets |

Safety notes for New Year's Eve in Brussels: Recent New Year nights in some Brussels neighbourhoods have seen vandalism, fires and attacks on emergency workers. These incidents were concentrated in certain districts, away from the main fireworks site, but they affect transport and road closures. Stick to the official celebration and main routes.
Expect security checks at the Atomium site. Leave glass bottles and large bags at your hotel.
Pickpockets work crowded metro platforms after midnight. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
Timing also matters. The Winter Wonders market in central Brussels runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, so a Brussels stay over New Year combines the fireworks with the market, the stalls and the ice rinks in the same trip. Choose Bruges for a quiet dinner, and add a day at Ostend if you want to join or watch the New Year's dive.
Where to stay for New Year's Eve in Brussels
The Atomium sits in Heysel, in the north of Brussels, far from the historic centre. That shapes the choice. Staying near the Grand-Place or Sainte-Catherine gives you the restaurants, bars and the Winter Wonders atmosphere, with a metro ride to the fireworks and back. Since STIB has run free transport after midnight at recent editions, the return trip is simple, and you wake up in the part of the city you actually want to explore on 1 January.
Hotels around Heysel and Laeken put you within walking distance of the Atomium, which helps with children or if you want to avoid crowded metro platforms. The trade-off is a quiet neighbourhood with few restaurants open late. In Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, stay inside the historic centre: all three are compact, and their New Year celebrations happen close to the main squares.
Wherever you stay in Brussels, check the walk to a metro station on line 1, 5 or 6. On New Year's Eve the metro runs into the early hours and Noctis night buses cover the city until morning, so a hotel near a metro or Noctis stop saves a long walk.

The free parts of the night carry most of the value. STIB has made every metro, tram and bus free after midnight in recent years, which covers the trip back from Heysel and most late bars in the centre. Walking around the Winter Wonders market is also free, so the main costs are the room, the dinner and any club ticket. Hotel prices for the holiday weekend vary widely between the centre and the outer communes, so compare a few areas before booking.
