New York Fashion Week guide

America's collections, shown to the trade.

In short

New York Fashion Week runs each February and September on a calendar set by the CFDA. Shows are mostly by invitation and scattered across Manhattan and Brooklyn, so visitors follow it through livestreams, street crowds and any public events. February 2027 dates had not been published as of October 2026.

New York Fashion Week is the twice-yearly run of runway shows and presentations at which American designers show their collections to buyers, editors and press. It takes place in February, for autumn and winter clothes, and in September, for the following spring and summer, with the official schedule set by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

The September 2026 season ran from 10 to 15 September with around 70 shows and presentations, opened by Diane von Furstenberg and closed by Thom Browne. It was also the first season under the CFDA's fur-free policy for brands on the official calendar.

Most shows are for the trade and admission is by invitation. There is no single venue: shows are spread across Manhattan and Brooklyn, in galleries, warehouses, hotels and stores. Visitors without an invitation can still feel the week in the neighbourhoods where crowds gather outside the shows, at the occasional public or ticketed event, and through the livestreams many labels now run.

Using the CFDA calendar to find public events

Start with the CFDA's official calendar, published shortly before each season, to see who is showing and whether any events are public. Then build your days around what you can actually do: shopping in SoHo and on Madison Avenue, current exhibitions, and watching the shows that are livestreamed.

February means cold weather and lower hotel prices than September. Our New York page covers the wider city.

From Press Week in 1943 to today's calendar

New York's fashion week grew out of Press Week, organised in 1943 by the publicist Eleanor Lambert, when the war cut American editors off from Paris. It gave American designers their own showcase for the first time.

For years the shows were gathered in tents in Bryant Park and later at Lincoln Center. Today there is no central site; designers show wherever suits the collection, and the CFDA coordinates the calendar.
