Recklinghausen travel guide
Coal for theatre, Orthodox icons and a Kunsthalle in a war bunker
Recklinghausen is the northernmost Ruhr city, known for the Ruhrfestspiele theatre festival, its icon museum and a walled old town. Visit in May and June for the festival. One day is enough outside festival time. Germany applies Schengen rules, with 90 visa-free days for many nationalities.
Recklinghausen is the northernmost city of the Ruhr, the point where the pitheads give way to the cornfields of the Münsterland. Its compact old town sits inside a ring road that traces the medieval walls, and the surrounding district, the old Vest Recklinghausen, still lends its name to the local bus company. Mining shaped the south of the city; the north stayed farmland.
Two things bring outsiders here. Each May and June the Ruhrfestspiele, one of Europe's oldest theatre festivals, fills the Festspielhaus on its hill in the Stadtgarten. The festival was born in the hungry winter of 1946, when local miners slipped coal to Hamburg's freezing theatres and the actors came back to say thanks. The other draw is the Ikonen-Museum beside St. Peter's church, often called the most important museum of Orthodox church art outside the Orthodox world. A day covers the town; plan two during the festival.

Getting there
Regional expresses to Europaplatz and Vestische buses south
Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is the nearest with long-haul and full European schedules. Trains from its station run to Essen or Gelsenkirchen, where you change onto a regional express to Recklinghausen; plan on roughly an hour. Dortmund Airport, mainly for budget flights to the Mediterranean and eastern Europe, links by shuttle bus to Dortmund's railway, from where it is about half an hour more by train. Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof is on Europaplatz at the edge of the old town and has lifts to all platforms. Regional expresses head north to Münster and south to Gelsenkirchen, Essen and Düsseldorf, an S-Bahn runs to Herne and Dortmund, and a few long-distance trains stop each day. The small Recklinghausen Süd station, in the old mining district of Hochlarmark, has nothing but platforms and a ticket machine. Drivers use the A2 and the A43, which cross just south of the city.
- Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)
- Train to Essen or Gelsenkirchen, change for Recklinghausen Hbf; about an hour
- Recklinghausen Hbf
- Europaplatz, a five-minute walk from the old town; central bus station in front
- Recklinghausen Süd
- Bare platforms in Hochlarmark, with local buses outside
- Get off at the Hauptbahnhof, not Süd, unless you are heading for the Umspannwerk museum.
Where to stay
Inside the Wallring, by Europaplatz or near the Festspielhaus
Stay inside the Wallring in the Altstadt, steps from St. Peter's and the restaurants on the Markt. Recklinghausen has a small stock of family-run hotels, and the whole town competes for them during the Ruhrfestspiele in May and June, when Münster or Essen, both direct by train, are the sensible fallback.
- Altstadt inside the Wallring
- Small hotels on the Markt and Grafenwall, steps from St. Peter's and the restaurants; can be noisy on festival nights
- Around the Hauptbahnhof
- Practical for trains and buses, a short walk from the old town, but bland in the evenings
- Stadtgarten area
- Green and quiet, near the Festspielhaus, the observatory and the small zoo; a 15-minute walk to the Markt
- Münster or Essen
- Larger choice and easy direct trains; the sensible plan when the festival has filled the town
Getting around
Vestische buses, VRR tickets and the walk up to the Grüner Hügel
The old town is small and almost entirely walkable, and the Hauptbahnhof, the Kunsthalle and the Ikonen-Museum all lie within ten minutes of the Markt. For anything further, Vestische runs local buses on the VRR fare system shared with the rest of the Ruhr, from the central bus station on Europaplatz, where a customer service centre sells tickets and day passes. Drivers sell tickets too, or use the VRR app. Buses also run south to Hochlarmark for the Umspannwerk and out to the Mollbeck outdoor pool. The Festspielhaus is about 20 minutes on foot from the Markt through the Stadtgarten, or a short bus ride. Halde Hoheward on the Herten boundary is best reached by bike or car.
- Europaplatz bus station
- Vestische lines across the city and to neighbouring Ruhr towns
- Umspannwerk
- Uferstraße by the Rhine-Herne Canal in Hochlarmark; check the VRR planner for the bus
- Night buses with NE numbers run at weekends after the last regular services.
Know before you go
Recklinghausen has an icon museum and a theatre festival each May.
Why travelers love it
- Gold-ground icons from Russia, Greece and the Balkans, room after room of them in the Ikonen-Museum by St. Peter's church.
- A summer premiere at the Ruhrfestspielhaus, with the audience spilling out onto the terrace of the Grüner Hügel in the interval.
- The horizon observatory on Halde Hoheward, two huge steel arcs on top of a former spoil heap with views across the Emscher landscape.
Good to know
- Buy bus tickets in the VRR app before boarding; the same tickets cover Vestische buses and local trains.
- Museums close on Mondays, including the Kunsthalle, so plan a Monday for the spoil heaps instead.

Icons at St. Peter's, a bunker Kunsthalle and Halde Hoheward
One day covers Recklinghausen outside festival time. See modern art in the Kunsthalle, a former bunker opposite the Hauptbahnhof, then the Propsteikirche St. Peter and the Ikonen-Museum in the Altstadt. In the afternoon, visit the Umspannwerk museum in Hochlarmark and the horizon observatory on Halde Hoheward, and in May or June see a Ruhrfestspiele show.
Morning. Start at the Kunsthalle facing the Hauptbahnhof. The building is a former air-raid bunker, its massive walls now hung with modern and contemporary art, and it hosts the art exhibition that runs alongside the festival each summer. Then walk into the Altstadt, past the line of the old walls, to the Propsteikirche St. Peter. Parts of it date from 1247, the late Romanesque hall was later stretched in the Gothic style, and inside are a late Gothic tabernacle and a baroque high altar.
Midday. Next door is the Ikonen-Museum, with hundreds of icons, embroideries and metalwork from Russia, Greece and the Balkans. Give it an hour and a half before lunch around the Markt.
Afternoon. Take a bus south to Hochlarmark for the Umspannwerk, a still-working electricity substation whose museum tells how power drove the Ruhr. On the way back, climb Halde Hoheward on the Herten side for the steel arcs of the horizon observatory.
Evening. In May or June, walk up through the Stadtgarten to the Ruhrfestspielhaus for a performance. Outside festival time, the Stadtgarten's public observatory and planetarium run evening shows.
Töttchen, Westphalian ham and Ruhr currywurst on the Markt
Recklinghausen sits between Münsterland farm cooking and Ruhr mining food. Order Westphalian ham with pumpernickel, Töttchen veal ragout or Grünkohl in winter, and Currywurst or a Mettbrötchen at an Imbiss. Restaurants cluster around the Markt and the lanes to St. Peter's, so reserve before a festival show.
Recklinghausen sits on a food border. To the north, the Münsterland kitchen is farm cooking: Westphalian ham, air-dried and smoked over beech, sliced thin on dark pumpernickel; Töttchen, a tangy veal ragout traditionally made with offal and finished with mustard and vinegar; and big pots of Grünkohl with smoked sausage in winter. To the south, the mining towns brought quick working-class food, from Currywurst and chips at an Imbiss to Mettbrötchen, raw minced pork on a roll with onion, eaten for breakfast.
The old town is where most of the sit-down choice lies. Restaurants and pubs cluster around the Markt and in the lanes towards St. Peter's, with terraces that fill on festival evenings, so reserve a table before a show. Several old-style pubs pour Pils from Ruhr and Münsterland breweries alongside schnitzel and roast pork.
Look out for Möpkenbrot, a Westphalian blood and rye sausage fried in slices and served with apple and onions, at traditional inns in the countryside north of town. It is an acquired taste, but locals swear by it on a cold day.

Visa & documents
As a Schengen member, Germany shares one set of entry rules with most of the EU. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Pickpocketing at large stations, Christmas markets and on big-city public transport is the main risk in a very safe country. Carry ID and validate paper tickets where required. Call 110 for police and 112 for fire or ambulance.
