San Luis Río Colorado
San Luis Río Colorado travel guide
A walk-across border city between the Pinacate craters and El Golfo
A Sonoran border city opposite San Luis, Arizona, at the meeting point with Baja California, used as a gateway to the Pinacate volcanic reserve and the Upper Gulf of California. November to March is mild and dry; summers are among the hottest in Mexico. A day trip or one night suits most visitors. Costs are moderate.
San Luis Río Colorado sits in the north-west corner of Sonora, where three borders meet. Arizona's San Luis lies across the international line and Baja California begins just west of town; to the south and east the Sonoran Desert runs away flat and sandy. Assembly plants and irrigated farms keep the city working. Most visitors are Arizonans who walk across for a dentist appointment, cheaper medicines or a plate of carne asada.
The name recalls a river that hardly appears any more. Steamboats once came up the Colorado from the Gulf of California to load cargo here, but dams and irrigation upstream have left the channel dry or reduced to a thin stream for most of the past century. The city got formal status only in 1958, and an Easter Sunday earthquake of magnitude 7.2 in 2010 destroyed several schools and a department store.
Heat is the defining fact. July and August highs average 41 to 42°C and rain hardly falls at all, so the sensible months are November to March. That is also when the desert around the city is worth exploring: the volcanic craters of El Pinacate to the east, and the fishing village of El Golfo de Santa Clara on the Gulf to the south.

Getting there
Walking over from San Luis, Arizona, or Highway 2 from Mexicali
Many visitors simply walk into San Luis Río Colorado from San Luis, Arizona, across the international crossing in the city centre. Yuma, a short drive north, has the nearest US airport, and Mexicali (MXL), about 75 km west along Highway 2, is the closest Mexican one. The city's own airfield handles only general aviation. Long-distance coaches use the central bus terminal on Avenida Benito Juárez, with TUFESA, TAP, Estrella Blanca and ABC among the lines serving Mexicali, Hermosillo and the rest of Sonora and Baja California. Drivers coming from the US need Mexican insurance and should check the vehicle permit rules before heading beyond the border zone.
- On foot from San Luis, Arizona
- The crossing opens straight into the city centre
- Mexicali airport (MXL)
- About 75 km west, roughly an hour by road on Highway 2
- Yuma, Arizona (YUM)
- The nearest US airport, a short drive north of the border
- Bus terminal
- Avenida Benito Juárez; TUFESA, TAP, Estrella Blanca and ABC
- Northbound queues into Arizona are longest on weekend and holiday afternoons; cross back early in the day.
- Sonora does not change its clocks, so the city keeps the same time as Arizona all year, and is an hour ahead of Mexicali in winter.
Where to stay
Along Highway 2 near the crossing or Avenida Álvaro Obregón
San Luis Río Colorado's hotels serve business travellers and border shoppers. Basic budget motels line Highway 2 near the crossing, handy for a late arrival, while Avenida Álvaro Obregón in the Comercial district has more comfortable mid-range and spa hotels within a short walk of better restaurants. Visitors who want the Arizona side for an early flight from Yuma often stay north of the border instead.
- Highway 2 near the crossing
- Cheap motels, fast access to the border; traffic and little to walk to
- Avenida Álvaro Obregón (Comercial)
- Better hotels and restaurants close together
- San Luis or Yuma, Arizona
- US-side chains for travellers flying from YUM
- In summer, check that the air conditioning works before you unpack; nights stay above 25°C in July and August.
Getting around
Taxis on Obregón and the desert roads to El Golfo and El Pinacate
San Luis Río Colorado sits on a flat, sandy mesa with an easy grid. The pharmacies, dentists, opticians and money changers are a few blocks from the crossing and best walked in the morning, and taxis, plentiful near the border and on Obregón, cover the rest. City buses run fixed routes along the main avenues, paid in cash. For day trips you need a car. El Golfo de Santa Clara lies to the south on a desert road along the old Colorado delta, and El Pinacate is reached by Highway 2 east to Sonoyta and then south toward Puerto Peñasco. Carry plenty of water and fuel on both trips, since services are sparse.
- On foot
- The border-side shopping and clinic streets
- Taxi
- Plentiful near the crossing and on Obregón; agree the fare
- Car
- Essential for El Golfo de Santa Clara and El Pinacate
- Do not walk long distances outdoors between June and September after mid-morning; the heat is dangerous.
Know before you go
What makes San Luis Río Colorado worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- El Pinacate's craters and lava fields, a protected volcanic desert of cinder cones and dunes that feels like another planet.
- Sonoran carne asada cooked over mesquite and wrapped in thin flour tortillas, the backbone of local eating.
- Shrimp at El Golfo de Santa Clara, a fishing village on the Upper Gulf of California where the Colorado once met the sea.
Good to know
- Summer heat is extreme: highs average 42°C in July, so plan visits for November to March.
- Sonora keeps Mountain Standard Time year-round, so clocks can differ from Mexicali, just to the west, by an hour in winter.

Weather in San Luis Río Colorado, month by month

Craters of El Pinacate and a seafood lunch at El Golfo
The El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the big day out from San Luis Río Colorado. Leave at first light with a full tank and several litres of water each, drive east on Highway 2 toward Sonoyta, then south toward Puerto Peñasco to its 715,000 hectares of craters, lava and dunes.
Ask reserve staff about track conditions, then follow the dirt tracks to a crater rim for a walk on black cinders under a huge sky. Turn back by early afternoon so you are not driving the desert road in the dark.
Day two. Head south from San Luis toward El Golfo de Santa Clara, a fishing village on the Upper Gulf of California. The road crosses the flat, salt-crusted lands of the old Colorado delta, now part of a biosphere reserve that protects the gulf's estuaries and marine life, including the critically endangered vaquita porpoise. In the village, eat shrimp or fish at a simple restaurant overlooking the fishing boats and walk on the wide tidal beach, where the gap between high and low water is dramatic.
Evening. Return to the city for dinner on Avenida Álvaro Obregón.
Mesquite-grilled carne asada and Sonoran dogos on Obregón
San Luis Río Colorado eats like the Sonoran cattle country it is. Carne asada means thin beef grilled over mesquite, served with grilled spring onions, chiles toreados, beans and salsa in large, thin flour tortillas from small local tortillerías; steakhouses on Avenida Álvaro Obregón and Carlos G. Calles serve big cuts, some with live music.
Street food follows the Sonoran pattern. The dogo, a bacon-wrapped hot dog in a soft bun, is loaded with beans, tomato, onion, mustard, mayonnaise and jalapeño sauce, and carts serve it in the evenings. Burritos filled with machaca, dried shredded beef, are the usual quick breakfast. For something sweet, look for coyotas, thin pastries filled with piloncillo, sold across the state.
Seafood comes from the Gulf of California, a drive of under two hours to the south. Shrimp from El Golfo de Santa Clara appears in cocktails, tacos and aguachile, raw shrimp cured in lime and chile.
Restaurants with regional Sonoran cooking are the safest bet for visitors who want to try a little of everything; casual Mexican places near the border cater to day-trippers from Arizona.
