Teknaf Beach is the southern stretch of the sandy coast that runs about 80 kilometres down the Teknaf peninsula from Cox's Bazar, ending at the southern tip of mainland Bangladesh in Teknaf Upazila, Cox's Bazar District. It suits travellers who want quiet sand, fishing villages and colourful boats away from the crowds of Cox's Bazar town.
Teknaf Beach is a chain of sections along the peninsula. Local names include Shamlapur Beach (also called Baharchara Beach), Shilkhali Beach, Hajampara Beach and the beach at Shahporir Dwip at the far south. Each has its own fishing village and landing point. Wikipedia describes the peninsula's sand as one of the longest beach systems in the world.
Brightly painted wooden fishing boats, called nao locally and nicknamed moon boats by visitors, are pulled up on the sand. Seine-net fishing is common on winter mornings. Behind the beach rise green hills and the mangrove areas of the peninsula, which support 161 species of fish. Inland lies the Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the oldest reserved forests in Bangladesh.
