Naf estuary
Views across to Myanmar.
Shahporir Dwip is the southern tip of mainland Bangladesh, about 15 km from Teknaf town, a former island now linked by road, with quiet beaches, salt fields, fishing jetties and views across the Naf River to Myanmar. Entry is free, and daylight visits are advised in this border area. A half day suits travellers already staying in Teknaf.
Shahporir Dwip is the southern tip of mainland Bangladesh, in Sabrang union, Teknaf upazila, Cox's Bazar district, about 15 km from Teknaf town. Facing Myanmar across the Naf estuary, it suits travellers in Teknaf who want a half-day of quiet beaches, salt pans and fishing jetties.
Shahporir Dwip was once cut off from the mainland by water. It is now joined to Teknaf by road, though tidal surges have repeatedly damaged the coastal road at Sabrang, and in the monsoon a short boat ride may be needed on part of the route.
To the east the Naf River meets the sea, and from the shore you can see the hills of Myanmar's Rakhine State and the town of Maungdaw. On clear days St. Martin's Island shows to the south. The island has several beaches backed by casuarina and coconut trees.
Most residents work in fishing and salt production. The road in passes wide salt pans worked mainly in the dry months, and boats land their catch at the jetty and along the beach. Small shops cluster at the bazaar.
