What to expect

Vietnam Airlines (IATA VN) is the flag carrier of Vietnam, headquartered in Hanoi with hubs at Hanoi Noi Bai and Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat. It flies about 117 routes in 19 countries, across Vietnam, Asia, Europe, Australia and to San Francisco. A SkyTeam member, it is the main full-service choice for travel to and within Vietnam.

From civil aviation office to airline

The airline traces its start to January 1956, when the North Vietnamese government set up Vietnam Civil Aviation. In 1993 the airline was separated from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam and became a state enterprise and the national carrier, carrying about 1.06 million passengers that year. It was incorporated with other aviation businesses as Vietnam Airlines Corporation in the mid 1990s.

Growth was steady: more than 4 million passengers in 2002 and over 9 million by 2007. In June 2010 Vietnam Airlines became a limited liability company and joined SkyTeam, the first Southeast Asian airline in the alliance. It became a joint-stock company in 2015, the year its first Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 arrived.

In November 2021 Vietnam Airlines flew its first non-stop service to the United States, Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco.

Two hubs and a long country

Vietnam is long and narrow, and the airline is built around its two ends. Noi Bai serves Hanoi and the north, Tan Son Nhat serves Ho Chi Minh City and the south, and Da Nang in the centre is a secondary hub. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia are focus cities.

The domestic network is dense, with frequent flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Internationally the airline flies across Asia, to European cities including Paris, Frankfurt and Munich, to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in Australia, and to San Francisco.

State ownership and ANA's stake

The state owned 86.34 per cent as of September 2021, through the Ministry of Finance and the state investment company SCIC. Japan's ANA Holdings is a strategic shareholder with 5.62 per cent. Lê Hồng Hà is chief executive.

The group includes the budget airline Pacific Airlines, rebranded in 2020 after Vietnam Airlines bought out Qantas's stake; VASCO, a regional airline in southern Vietnam; VAECO, the maintenance company; and catering businesses. In 2025 the airline reported revenue of VND 121,429 billion and profit of VND 7,713 billion.

Fleet goals for 2030 and the 737 MAX order

The airline aims for about 150 aircraft by 2030, and a Boeing 737 MAX order finalised in 2026 is due to deliver from 2030, so new routes and extra frequencies keep appearing.

Planning a trip across Vietnam

For trips that cover both the north and the south, an open-jaw ticket into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City, or the other way round, saves backtracking.

Online Check-in

Here is the order to follow for a VN flight: check in, sort your documents, meet the airport deadline and drop your bags.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

International Vietnam Airlines passengers need a passport and whatever visa, residence permit or entry documents the destination requires. Domestic VN passengers should bring a photo ID the airline accepts.

  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Get to the airport with time for Vietnam Airlines check-in, bag drop and security. The airline sets a deadline for each airport, shown in your booking, and late arrivals can lose their seat.

  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

At the airport, take your bags to the Vietnam Airlines bag-drop point. Collect a printed VN boarding pass there if you have not saved one to your phone.

  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Tết (Lunar New Year) and the summer holidays are the busiest times in Vietnam.

  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

A Vietnam Airlines fare that includes a checked bag, seat choice or cheaper changes can cost less overall than adding those extras later.
