What to expect

All Nippon Airways (ANA; IATA: NH, ICAO: ANA) is Japan's largest airline, ahead of Japan Airlines, headquartered at Shiodome City Center in Minato, Tokyo. From its main hubs at Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita it flies to about 92 destinations in Japan, Asia, North America, Europe and Australia, and it suits travellers flying into Tokyo or connecting through Japan between Asia and North America.

From helicopters to Japan's largest airline

ANA began on 27 December 1952 as Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports. It took the All Nippon Airways name in 1957 and merged with Far East Airlines in 1958. ANA Holdings Inc., formed in 2013, is now the parent company of the airline and its sister businesses.

Haneda and Narita hubs

Tokyo has two ANA hubs. Haneda and Narita both have ANA domestic and international flights. Osaka Itami and Kansai are secondary hubs, and Fukuoka, Nagoya Centrair, Naha in Okinawa and Sapporo Chitose are focus cities. Check which Tokyo airport your flight uses before booking a connection.

ANA Wings, Air Japan and Peach

ANA Wings and Air Japan are group airlines, Nippon Cargo Airlines carries freight, and Peach Aviation, fully owned by ANA, is the group's low-cost airline.

Booking domestic flights to Hokkaido and Okinawa

ANA's domestic network reaches focus cities such as Sapporo, Fukuoka and Naha, so a trip to Hokkaido, Kyushu or Okinawa can be booked on the same ANA ticket as your international flight.

Online Check-in

Here is the order to follow for an NH flight: check in, sort your documents, meet the airport deadline and drop your bags.

  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Use ana.co.jp to check in for eligible flights. Have your ANA booking reference or e-ticket number and your surname ready.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

International ANA passengers need a passport and whatever visa, residence permit or entry documents the destination requires. Domestic NH passengers should bring a photo ID the airline accepts.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Get to the airport with time for ANA check-in, bag drop and security. The airline sets a deadline for each airport, shown in your booking, and late arrivals can lose their seat.

    Check your deadline
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

ANA desks and bag-drop points take your hold luggage. Keep the bag-tag receipt with your boarding pass until the bags come off at the end of your NH trip.

Cheap tickets

How to find a cheaper ANA fare without giving up the bag or seat you need.

  1. 01

Be flexible with your ANA dates

Compare a full week of ANA departures; midweek days are often priced below Fridays and Sundays.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Avoid peak holiday dates

Domestic and international fares rise during Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon in mid-August and the New Year holidays. Book early for those dates.

    School holidays · festivals
  3. 03

Check what each ANA fare includes

The lowest NH fare is not always the cheapest trip once bags and seats are added. Compare the fare types before you pay.

    Baggage & changes
  4. 04

    Prefer Haneda when you can

Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo than Narita. Compare fares and total travel time from both before you book.
