Japan Airlines (JAL, IATA JL) is one of Japan's two major full-service airlines, with hubs at Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita. It flies a dense domestic network and international routes to Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania, and it suits travellers who want a oneworld airline into Japan with a strong Premium Economy and Business product.
JAL was founded on 1 August 1951 and began flying in October that year. It became Japan's national airline in 1953, while still owned by the government, and was fully privatised in 1987. In 2002 it merged with Japan Air System, a large domestic carrier. JAL has been listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange since September 2012.
JAL was once the largest operator of the Boeing 747. Its red crane logo, the tsurumaru, was designed in 1958 and 1959 and returned as the main livery in 2011. In April 2024 Mitsuko Tottori became president and chief executive, the first woman in the job. The head office is in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita are the two hubs. Osaka Itami and Osaka Kansai are secondary hubs, and Fukuoka, Nagoya Centrair, Okinawa's Naha and Sapporo New Chitose are focus cities. Wikipedia counts about 146 mainline aircraft serving roughly 91 destinations.
JAL joined oneworld in 2007, alongside partners such as American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Qantas. The group includes regional airlines J-Air, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Transocean Air, Hokkaido Air System and Ryukyu Air Commuter, plus JAL Cargo and two low-cost airlines: Zipair Tokyo for long-haul and Spring Japan. JAL also has a share in Jetstar Japan, from which Qantas announced in February 2026 it would exit by July 2026.
International menus offer Western and Japanese meals, with seasonal choices, and a children's menu has been available since 2016. The signature lounge is the Sakura Lounge, named after the cherry blossom, and JAL also runs First Class lounges. Access depends on your cabin or your status with JAL Mileage Bank or the JAL Global Club.

Travel tip: Tokyo flights can arrive at Haneda or Narita, which are far apart, so check the airport on your booking, especially if you connect to a domestic flight. Baggage allowances depend on your fare and route, and the official JAL website lists the current rules.
JAL does not give every passenger the same allowance: the route, the cabin and the fare you buy each change it. Your JL e-ticket shows what you have.
International JAL flights generally use a piece concept with checked bags included, while domestic flights use a weight allowance. Check your e-ticket for the exact amount.
JAL check-in comes down to four steps, from checking in online to dropping your bags at Tokyo Haneda.
