What to expect
Bhutan Airlines is the trading name of Tashi Air Pvt. Ltd, the country's privately owned airline and part of the Tashi Group. It began flying in December 2011 and later moved from domestic hops to international service. Its base is Paro International Airport, Bhutan's only international gateway, and its head office is in Thimphu.
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi is the airline's main foreign point. Two kinds of flight link Thailand with Bhutan:
From Paro the airline also flies to Delhi and Kathmandu. The whole network is run with two Airbus A319s, each fitted with a business cabin and an economy cabin, so a single technical problem can shuffle the timetable.
The airline's own destination list names Paro, Bangkok, Kolkata, Delhi and Kathmandu, so most international visitors join it in Bangkok, Delhi or Kolkata. Drukair, the national airline, covers routes Bhutan Airlines does not, such as Dhaka to Paro; feeder flights into its gateways include Dhaka to Kolkata and Dhaka to Bangkok.
A bumpy start as Tashi Air
The airline was launched as Tashi Air in December 2011, Bhutan's first private airline, and began regular domestic flights to Bathpalathang and Yonphula on 18 December 2011. The domestic network lost money, and services to Jakar and Trashigang ended in June 2012 when the company asked the government to suspend them. It relaunched as Bhutan Airlines on 10 October 2013 with an Airbus A320 wet-leased from a Lithuanian company, flying from Paro to Kolkata and on to Bangkok. Under its agreement with the government it was required to return to domestic flying by October 2014.
Building a small international network
The first owned Airbus A319 arrived on 1 May 2014 and a second on 30 July 2014; both carry 12 business and 114 economy seats. Delhi was added in mid-September 2015. The airline lists about six destinations in all, including Pokhara in Nepal alongside Kathmandu. It has offices in Kolkata, Bangkok and Kathmandu, and Pema N Nadik is chief executive. The ICAO code is BTN.
