Dhaka to Kolkata flight guide
Flights from Dhaka to Kolkata take about an hour from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) at Dum Dum, 239 km across the border into West Bengal. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines and IndiGo fly it nonstop. Hospital appointments, shopping around New Market and visits to relatives account for a large share of the seats.
IndiGo flies 6E1106 daily on an Airbus A320neo, the only jet on the route; its departure moves between about 14:40 and 17:35 depending on the schedule period. US-Bangla's ATR 72-600 operates BS201 at 10:00 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, landing at 10:30 Kolkata time because India is half an hour behind Bangladesh. Biman uses the Dash 8-400.
Check the bag allowance on your fare. US-Bangla lists 20 kg checked, and IndiGo's allowance varies with the fare, from 15 kg on some tickets to 30 kg on others.
Kolkata's airport is in the north-east of the city. Since August 2025 the Yellow Line metro has run from Jai Hind Bimanbandar station at the airport to Noapara, where you change to the Blue Line for Esplanade and Park Street. By taxi or app cab the same trip can take over an hour in traffic. Hotels in New Town and Rajarhat are the closest to the terminal.
You need an Indian visa before you fly and a passport valid for six months. Visa availability for Bangladeshi applicants has changed more than once in recent years, so apply early and check which categories the Indian missions are processing.
The Dhaka end is in transition. Hazrat Shahjalal's third terminal is due for a soft opening on 16 December 2026, with the whole building in use from about March or April 2027, according to the civil aviation minister in September 2026. Until then, Kolkata flights check in at the current international terminal.

Getting there
Only IndiGo. Its Airbus A320neo seats 186 people, while Biman's Dash 8-400 (74 seats) and US-Bangla's ATR 72-600 (72 seats) are turboprops. The jet carries more than twice as many people, so it is the likeliest to have seats left on busy dates. Flying time is close to identical on all of them.
Walk to Jai Hind Bimanbandar, the Yellow Line station built at the airport. Ride it to Noapara, the end of that line, and cross to the Blue Line platform there. The Blue Line runs south through the city centre and stops at both Esplanade and Park Street, so one change covers the whole trip.
Yes. The road crosses the frontier at Benapole, Bangladesh's largest land port, and Petrapole on the Indian side, about 95 km from Kolkata on National Highway 112; people and vehicles both clear the checkpoint there. The road trip takes far longer than the short flight, but it avoids the airport transfers at both ends and the checked baggage limits.
The Kolkata service is an international departure, so check in on the international side of Hazrat Shahjalal, not at the domestic terminal used for Chattogram, Sylhet or Cox's Bazar. You also pass Bangladeshi emigration before the gate, so arrive earlier than you would for a domestic hop of the same length.
General
Yes. IndiGo includes 15 kg in the hold, against 20 kg on both Bangladeshi carriers. Every airline on the route allows 7 kg in the cabin. If you are taking gifts for relatives or bulky medical records, the larger allowance on Biman or US-Bangla can be worth more than a small fare difference.
For a single night, the airport hotel under Where to stay sits on Jessore Road right next to the runway, which saves any drive at all. New Town and Rajarhat suit stays of a few days: the Novotel, Fairfield by Marriott and ibis there are close to arrivals and have newer, wider roads around them.
You can. Kolkata airport keeps domestic and international flights in one integrated building, so the transfer stays under one roof. Clear Indian immigration and customs first, collect your bag unless it is checked through, then re-check it for the domestic flight. IndiGo, flying both sectors on a single ticket, makes this the simplest.
Stay & facilities
The hotel in Alipore under Where to stay puts you in the south of the city beside the zoo. ITC Royal Bengal on JBS Haldane Avenue is just off the EM Bypass, roughly 20 km from the terminal. Both are expensive, and both mean a longer ride from Dum Dum, so they make sense when your appointments are on that side.
Cancellations & changes
Yes, by half an hour. India Standard Time runs thirty minutes behind Bangladesh, so a one-hour flight lands only about thirty minutes later on the local clock than it left Dhaka. Hospital and visa appointments in Kolkata are always given in Indian time.
Visa & documents
Carry the passport with the Indian visa already in it, plus printed copies of your return booking and your hotel address. On a medical visa, keep the hospital's invitation letter and earlier reports in the cabin bag, since officers may ask the reason for your visit and the treating hospital.
