Bangkok to Paro flight guide
Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok (BKK) to Paro International Airport (PBH), the only international airport in Bhutan. The 1,925 km flight takes about 2 hours 55 minutes nonstop. The route suits travellers who want to pair Bhutan with Thailand and anyone flying to Bhutan from East Asia, Australia or Europe through Bangkok.
Only Bhutan's own carriers fly to Paro. Drukair, the national airline, has a mixed fleet of Airbus A319 and A320 jets, ATR turboprops and a PC-24. It limits each checked bag to 32 kg whatever the cabin class, opens airport check-in three hours before departure and closes it one hour before, and asks passengers to reconfirm 72 hours ahead. Online check-in opens 72 hours before departure and shuts four hours before.
Bhutan Airlines, owned by the Tashi Group, began flying in 2011 as the country's first private airline. As of August 2025 it flew two Airbus A319s with 12 business and 114 economy seats. Some flights on both airlines stop in India on the way, for example at Kolkata, Guwahati or Bagdogra, so check whether your flight is nonstop. Drukair resumed a twice-weekly Paro, Guwahati and Bangkok service on 2 April 2026.
Paro sits at 2,235 m above sea level in a narrow valley, with peaks of up to 5,500 m around it, and its runway is 2,265 m long. Only a small number of specially cleared pilots fly into it, and only in daylight under visual conditions; in windy seasons afternoon flights face extra limits. That is why departures from Bangkok leave early in the morning and why weather can hold a flight. Leave a spare day before any connection out of Bhutan.
Both airlines fly from Suvarnabhumi, which opened in 2006 about 25 km east of central Bangkok. With an early departure, the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai is the most predictable way out; it takes about 27 minutes. Some gates are in the SAT-1 satellite building, reached by an underground train in about three minutes, so allow extra time after security.
Paro International Airport lies about 6 km from Paro town and 54 km from the capital, Thimphu, roughly an hour by road. Most visitors are met by their guide or hotel. Visitors pay Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee and need entry approval arranged before arrival; check the current rules on our Bhutan visa page.
Travellers coming from Dhaka on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways land at Suvarnabhumi (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights), the same airport the Paro flights use. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration and checking in again. Dhaka also has its own flights to Bhutan: see Dhaka to Paro flights.
Bhutan is one hour behind Thailand (Thailand is UTC+7), and neither country uses daylight saving.

Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
