Giugliano in Campania travel guide
A Naples commuter town that runs down to the sea at Lago Patria
Giugliano is a large residential town in the Naples hinterland, most useful as a base for the Campi Flegrei and the coast at Lago Patria. One night is usually enough; spring and early autumn are the most comfortable months. Schengen rules let many nationalities stay 90 days without a visa.
Giugliano in Campania is the largest Italian town that is not a provincial capital, a sprawling comune of about 125,000 people on the flat land north-west of Naples. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself, and most visitors are here on business, visiting family or using it as a cheaper base on the edge of the Naples metropolitan area.
Its stretch of coast is the surprise. West of the inland centre, the municipality reaches the sea around the Lago Patria lagoon, where the remains of Roman Liternum lie close to the shore. Scipio Africanus, the general who beat Hannibal, retired to his villa at Liternum and died there. Ancient Cumae and the volcanic Campi Flegrei begin just to the south.

Getting there
Capodichino, the Arcobaleno line or the Asse Mediano
Naples Capodichino is the nearest airport, a short drive to the south-east, and the one almost everyone uses. Napoli Centrale is the main rail hub for high-speed trains from Rome and the north. Public transport from either to Giugliano exists but is slow and patchy for visitors, so most people arrive by taxi or hire car.
- Naples Capodichino (NAP)
- Taxi or hire car, roughly half an hour outside rush hour
- Rail from Naples
- Metro Line 1 to Piscinola, then the EAV Arcobaleno line towards Aversa, which stops at Giugliano
- Napoli Centrale
- High-speed trains from Rome, then onward by road or the metro route above
- By road
- The Asse Mediano crosses the inland town; the Via Domitiana runs along the coast past Varcaturo and Lago Patria
- If you plan to explore the coast at Lago Patria or the Campi Flegrei, a car is close to essential.
- Allow extra time at rush hour: the roads between Naples and its northern suburbs are among the most congested in the region.
- Agree a taxi fare before setting off, or book a transfer through your hotel.
- The rail route suits the inland centre only; nothing on it reaches the coastal districts.
Where to stay
Inland centre, Varcaturo or Lago Patria
The comune is so spread out that picking the wrong side can add half an hour to every trip. Business and family visits point to the inland town, which is plain but closest to Naples, Aversa and the Arcobaleno station.
- Inland centre
- Closest to Naples and Aversa, plain and residential, heavy traffic
- Varcaturo
- Coastal strip along the Via Domitiana with beach clubs and pizzerias; packed on summer weekends
- Lago Patria
- Beside the lagoon and the Liternum ruins, very quiet out of season, car essential
- Pozzuoli (outside the comune)
- Port town with restaurants and the Cumana railway into Naples
- Beach days and the ruins of Cumae point to the coast, where Varcaturo has most of the hotels and restaurants and Lago Patria is quieter still.
- Both coastal areas feel half-closed from October to May.
- If you want evening life within walking distance, Pozzuoli just to the south is the better base.
Getting around
Via Domitiana and the coast road by car
Giugliano is spread over a wide area: the old inland centre and the coastal districts around Lago Patria are more than 10 km apart, and buses between them are infrequent. A car gives you the freedom to reach Cumae, Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei in well under an hour.
- Car
- The practical way to link the inland town, the coast and Cumae
- Taxi
- Pre-book; few cruise the streets
- EAV trains
- The Arcobaleno line links the inland town with Aversa and with Naples Metro Line 1 at Piscinola
- Inside the old centre, walking is fine for short errands, but pavements are narrow and traffic heavy.
- Parking in Naples itself is hard, so for a day in the city consider leaving the car and taking a train from a suburban station.
- For a day in central Naples, park near Giugliano station and ride the train in.
- Fill up and use the toilets before heading to Cumae; services along the coast road are sparse in winter.
Know before you go
What makes Giugliano in Campania worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Lago Patria, a coastal lagoon where Roman Liternum, Scipio Africanus' place of retirement, once stood.
- Cumae a short drive south, home of the Sibyl's cave and one of the oldest Greek colonies in mainland Italy.
- Proper Neapolitan pizza at local prices, far from the queues of central Naples.
Good to know
- This is not a tourist town: expect few English signs, sparse public transport and no tourist office.
- Traffic toward Naples is heavy at commuting hours, so plan airport runs with a generous margin.

Weather in Giugliano in Campania, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Giugliano in Campania are being researched.
A day between Lago Patria and Cumae
Spend the day on the coast. In the morning drive west to Lago Patria, the brackish lagoon behind the dunes, where the Roman colony of Liternum was founded. Scipio Africanus, the general who defeated Hannibal, withdrew here in bitterness after political attacks in Rome, and tradition holds that he was buried on his estate.
Around midday continue south to Cumae, the oldest Greek settlement on the Italian mainland. The highlight is the long trapezoidal tunnel known as the Cave of the Sibyl, linked in legend to the oracle consulted by Aeneas, with the acropolis temples above it. After lunch, head on to Pozzuoli, where the Rione Terra promontory and the Flavian amphitheatre sit inside a town still lifted and lowered by volcanic movement.
Return in the late afternoon, before the evening traffic builds on the roads back to Giugliano, and have dinner at a pizzeria in town.
Pizza, frittatine and Aversa buffalo mozzarella
Food is the best reason to linger. Giugliano sits inside the Naples pizza belt, and a neighbourhood pizzeria here turns out the same soft-centred, blistered pizza napoletana as the famous city addresses, with no queue. Order a margherita first to judge the place.
Neighbouring Aversa is one of the classic homes of mozzarella di bufala, sold fresh each morning in dairies across the area. Look for the larger braided form, the treccia, if you are buying for a picnic. Fried street food is everywhere: frittatine di pasta (fried pasta cakes), potato croquettes called crocchè and rice arancini.
For pastry, the Naples staples rule: rum-soaked babà and shell-shaped sfogliatella. Down the coast in Pozzuoli the port restaurants serve the day's catch, a good excuse to combine dinner with a visit to the Campi Flegrei.
Liternum, Scipio's retreat
Liternum, the Roman town by Lago Patria, was a coastal colony given to about three hundred veterans of the Second Punic War, probably from Scipio Africanus's army. Scipio himself withdrew to a fortified villa here and, by tradition, died and was buried at Liternum in 183 BC. The ruins form part of the Campi Flegrei archaeological park, but opening has been irregular for years, so ask the park office before making the trip.

Quick answers to the questions travelers ask most before visiting Giugliano in Campania.
General
In the Metropolitan City of Naples, on the plain north-west of Naples, with its territory reaching the coast at Lago Patria.
It works if you have a car and want lower hotel prices than Naples. Without one, Pozzuoli is the easier base for the same sights.
A coastal lagoon inside the comune, near the remains of the Roman town of Liternum, where Scipio Africanus spent his last years.
About 125,000 people, which makes it the most populous Italian comune that is not a provincial capital.
Frittatine di pasta, crocchè and arancini are the usual starters, eaten before the pizza arrives.
Giugliano in Campania is best known for:
- Lago Patria, a coastal lagoon where Roman Liternum, Scipio Africanus' place of retirement, once stood

Getting there
By a wide margin. A taxi takes roughly half an hour outside rush hour, while the bus, metro and EAV train combination needs two changes.
Only with difficulty. Buses along the Via Domitiana are infrequent and the rail line serves the inland town, so a car or taxi is the realistic option.
Cumae lies about 10 km south along the coast, a drive of around 15 to 20 minutes outside summer weekends.
Yes, indirectly. The EAV Arcobaleno line runs to Piscinola, where you change to Metro Line 1 for the centre and Garibaldi.
Timing & weather
On July and August weekends, when day-trippers drive out from Naples along the Via Domitiana. Come midweek or in September for space.
The best time to visit Giugliano in Campania is Apr to Jun, Sep to Oct. Warm, dry days for Cumae and the coast without the July and August heat.
- Spring: April - June (Comfortable for walking around Cumae, Liternum and the Campi Flegrei before the heat sets in)
- Summer: July - August (Hot inland; the coast around Lago Patria and Varcaturo fills with Neapolitan day-trippers at weekends)
- Autumn: September - October (Sea still warm in September and the roads to the coast much quieter)
Visa & documents
Schengen rules apply in Italy. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Violent crime against visitors to Italy is rare. Pickpocketing is the main problem, especially on buses and metros in Rome (bus 64 is notorious), at Roman and Florentine sights, and at Termini and Naples Centrale stations. Wear your bag across your body and zip it, and use only licensed white taxis or official ride apps.
