The National Botanical Garden of Bangladesh is an 84-hectare garden at Mirpur-2, Dhaka, founded in 1961 beside the National Zoo. With the National Herbarium it is the country's largest plant conservation centre, and it suits morning walkers, families and anyone curious about tropical plants and winter birds.
The garden covers about 84 hectares (210 acres) divided into 57 sections. The Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment and Forests manages it, and it is open all year. Baldha Garden in Wari, old Dhaka, is administratively part of the same national garden. The herbarium holds about 100,000 preserved specimens.
The living collection includes about 56,000 trees, herbs and shrubs and a large group of aquatic plants. Rare and exotic species include the giant water lily Victoria amazonica, camphor, white sandalwood, the African tulip tree, Anthurium crystallinum, the rabbit fern, Dombeya spectabilis, Ixora superba, Mussaenda luteola, Cissus quadrangularis and elder. A propagation area and a tissue culture laboratory raise rare plants, starting with orchids.
Visitors head for the rose garden, the lake and its bridge, a watch deck and an artificial waterfall. In winter thousands of migratory birds settle on the water. Early mornings bring walkers, joggers and yoga groups, while families and students fill the paths at weekends.
