Near the Tripura border in Chunarughat, Habiganj, Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1,795-hectare natural hill forest established in 1982 and known for birds, langurs and gibbons. Nature lovers should plan half a day, ideally walking with a local guide early in the morning.
Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected hill forest of about 1,796 hectares in Chunarughat Upazila, Habiganj District, north-eastern Bangladesh, on the border with the Indian state of Tripura and about 130 kilometres north-east of Dhaka. It suits birdwatchers and walkers looking for primates in one of the country's better-kept natural forests.
The sanctuary was established in 1982 and enlarged in 1996. As of 2009 it covered 1,795.54 hectares (17.96 square kilometres), made up of four beats of the Kalenga forest range: Kalenga, Rema, Chanbari and Rashidpur. It is an IUCN category IV area, managed for habitats and species. Sreemangal in Moulvibazar District is the usual base for visits.
Rema-Kalenga is a mix of dry and evergreen woodland and remains one of the few natural forests in Bangladesh in fairly good condition. Illegal felling and tree theft are the main threats. Surveys have recorded 638 species of plants.
Surveys list 37 mammals, 167 birds, 18 reptiles and 7 amphibians. Primates are the main draw: capped langur, Phayre's langur and western hoolock gibbon. Other mammals include Asian golden cat, leopard cat, hog badger, wild boar, barking deer and five species of squirrel. Small wild cats and jackals are now the main ground predators. Tigers and leopards were common in the 1960s, but no tiger has been reliably seen since 1971, occasional leopard reports may be strays from India, and dholes vanished in the 1990s.
Birders look for racket-tailed drongos, hill mynas, red-headed trogons, red-whiskered bulbuls, kalij pheasants and red junglefowl, and the critically endangered white-rumped vulture has been recorded. BirdLife International lists the area as an Important Bird Area. Burmese pythons and green pit vipers are among the reptiles.
