In short

About 13 km east of Sylhet city, Khadimnagar National Park is a 679-hectare hill forest surrounded by tea estates and declared a national park in 2006. It suits walkers and birdwatchers looking for a forest trail close to the city. Two to three hours is typical.

Khadimnagar National Park lies about 13 kilometres east of Sylhet city in north-eastern Bangladesh. It covers around 679 hectares of hilly forest and is surrounded by the Kalagul, Burjan and Gulni tea estates. The park is about 10 kilometres long and only half a kilometre wide.

Old tea land replanted by the Forest Department

During the British period much of the area was cleared for tea. After 1950 the Forest Department planted teak, garjan, bamboo, champa, agar, akashmoni, eucalyptus and acacia, and the forest today is a patchwork of plantations of different ages mixed with natural growth. The government declared it a national park on 13 April 2006 under the wildlife protection law.

Streams, orchids and dense undergrowth

The ground is undulating and cut by streams and hill spurs, and walking off the paths is hard because of the dense growth. Around 352 plant species from 81 families have been recorded, including agar, garjan, teak and many orchids that grow on the trees. Surveys list about 26 mammal species, 25 bird species and 20 reptile species. Several plants found here, such as Rauvolfia serpentina and wild mango, are considered threatened.
