Satchari National Park is a 243 hectare hill forest in Chunarughat, Habiganj, established in 2005 and named after its seven streams, known for primates, hornbills and walking trails between tea estates.
Satchari National Park is a 243-hectare hill forest beside the Dhaka to Sylhet highway in Chunarughat, Habiganj, about 130 km from Dhaka, declared in 2005 and named after its seven streams. Tea estates surround it, and walking trails lead through habitat for primates and hornbills. Entry is ticketed, making it an easy stop on the drive to Sylhet.
Satchari National Park lies on Raghunandan Hill in Paikpara Union of Chunarughat Upazila, Habiganj District, in north east Bangladesh. It is about 130 kilometres from Dhaka by road and sits beside the Dhaka to Sylhet highway, surrounded by tea estates, with Satchari tea garden to the west and Chaklapunji tea garden to the east.
The park was declared in 2005 under the Wildlife Preservation Act and covers about 243 hectares, or 600 acres, of remaining tropical semi-evergreen forest. The name Satchari means seven streams in Bengali, after the small streams that run through the forest.
The forest includes shal, teak, agar, garjan and chapalish, with bamboo and cane in the undergrowth. The park is home to several primates, among them hoolock gibbons, Phayre's langurs, capped langurs and rhesus macaques, as well as many reptiles. Birdwatchers come for the red junglefowl, red-headed trogon, oriental pied hornbill and other forest species.
Marked walking trails of different lengths start near the entrance. Local guides can be hired at the gate and help to spot wildlife.
An entry ticket is sold at the gate. Early morning gives the best chance to hear gibbons and see birds, and the dry months from November to March are the easiest for walking.
Do people live inside the park? Yes. A small settlement of the Tipra people, about 24 families as of 2007, lives in Tipra village within the forest, and some trails pass close to it. Visitors should ask before taking photographs of homes or people.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
