Morning nets
Watch crews haul seine nets onto the sand.
Shamlapur, also called Baharchhara beach, is a quiet stretch of the Teknaf coast in Cox's Bazar where fishing crews haul large seine nets onto the sand by hand on winter mornings. Access is free, and daylight visits are recommended. Photographers and slow travellers usually spend one to two hours.
Shamlapur Sea Beach, also called Baharchhara beach, is a fishing shore on Marine Drive in Baharchhara union, Teknaf upazila, Cox's Bazar district, Bangladesh. It suits early risers who want to watch crews haul seine nets onto an open, undeveloped beach between Inani and Teknaf.
The beach is one section of the nearly continuous shoreline that runs south from Cox's Bazar, with Shilkhali and Hajampara further down. It lies about 30 km north of Teknaf town, 20 km from Inani and 15 km from Patuartek. Shamlapur Bazar is the local trading centre. A different beach in Banshkhali, Chattogram, also uses the Baharchhara name.
The main sight is the seine-net fishing common on winter mornings from Shamlapur down to Teknaf. The beach seine, locally called ber jal, is an encircling net worked by a crew of 11 to 15 men with one boat, and it can reach 600 to 700 m from the shore. The crew hauls it in by hand and sorts the catch on the sand. Ask before photographing people.
The beach is long, flat and open, with fine grey sand and casuarina trees behind. There are no resorts, water sports or facilities, and on most days the only sounds come from the sea and the fishing camps.
